The Islamic cultural center is a magnificent landmark and a truly special place. From the moment I entered the grounds there was nothing but peace. The beautiful Mosque is grand, modernist architecture on Third Avenue, you know you are visiting a landmark of spiritual and cultural significance. It is one of the city's largest mosques and serves not only as a place of worship for the Muslim community. Stepping inside, the vast, light-filled prayer hall with its soaring dome is breathtakingly peaceful. Upon entering the prayer room, shoes are not permitted. The ladies are on one side, and the men are on the other. Which I actually like because it was nice to have a place wherein ladies can speak and pray amongst themselves. Even though we were there for final prayers for the family matriarch. We were all at peace. The space is immaculately clean and well-organized, with a palpable sense of calm that is perfect for prayer and reflection. The staff and regular attendees are exceptionally friendly and welcoming to newcomers, including non-Muslim visitors like myself. The center also offers a wide range of educational programs and events, including weekly classes and forums, demonstrating its commitment to being a true cultural center, not just a mosque. Whether you are seeking a place to pray, to learn more about Islam, or simply to admire the unique and beautiful architecture, the ICCNY is a phenomenal place. For a small urban style mosque in busy Astoria, they manage to have enough dates and fruits to please the elderly and freshly baked baklava for the kids. After breaking my fast, they held the Maghrib prayers/one of the 5 daily prayers in Islam... After prayer, a brigade of little kids started handing out something similar to a bento box. I was ecstatic to find a but-load of rice, a side of okra curry, salad, and a giant baked chicken leg. Chicken was tender and okra was sweet and savory. All in all, a pretty damn good meal, even better cuz its free!

Our prayer floor is the third 3rd floor . There is 5 floors for praying The men have 4 floors. All signs clearly written at all the entrances that the third floor is the sisters floor. Me and another woman, arrived at around 1250 pm Friday to prepare for jumah. We put our shoes in the cubby , we put our bags down in the front area of the floor and started praying and reading . All of the sudden two men came to us in front of us and told us to leave and pointed to the back of our floor The way in the back, approx 10x10 space was curtain off for us women. I asked the women, if this is the women's floor , they said yes. But men keep coming in. Finally the adhan started and to save our salah we went into the small space. It was a total of 28 beautiful sisters stuck in this small hot space. We didn't have any room . After the service, I went to speak to the Imam about the situation we were rudely interrupted, many times, the imam didn't care at all about the situation or about the women who worship here. His answer to me was when I go to haj it's more crowded . I tried to explain that we are professional women and we make money we donate and work in Manhattan we deserve to be treated better and have a place to pray without being pushed around by men. This obese imam is not a good Imam for women, he talks the talk but does not walk the walk. Women deserve better . I will never come here again.

Except paying for classes I take I don't pay or get asked to pay or am forced or pressured to pay anything. Do understand that donations would help keep the place running but it isn't something pushed or forced on you. When I took the New Muslim class I received a free bag with books, a bottle for cleaning and a beautiful prayer rug. At some point I received prayer beads. Get free coffee or tea and snacks every class. I am also taking an Arabic learning class now. Both teachers I have had are super great. Patient and kind. Most staff there that I have met have been super nice and kind. They have events regularly. I haven't had chance to go because of work but insha'Allah I will go soon. They are great and I am glad I went as I was scared to all those months ago based on that review from 2 years ago. Thankfully I listened to my gut and went. Understand there are different schools of Islam that some follow such as hanafi, maliki, shafi'i and hanbali which are Sunni and there are others including shia Muslims. But just because there may be some difference​s such as if when you pray the placement of your hands. Doesn't mean we can't all be together and respect each other. If you are new do not worry about picking a school to follow. Learn what you can and eventually when you are ready and know which school works for you then fine but at your own time and place. Haven't been pressured to do anything here. The teacher for the new Muslim class would describe any such differences in an unbiased way. He also really want into subjects that we as reverts want answered but not many will go into sensitive topics. Ahhh I wrote a lot and wish I could keep writing to address any issues or doubt's some may have but you just have to go and see for yourself.

You need a ID to get into the building, sign in. Take the elevator up. A beautiful room with floor to ceiling windows, open views of Washington Square park. I think today was in a different building next door law center, due to maybe large number of people. The room was filled to capacity. Excellent community, mostly all students and faculty and people that work near by. The Imam gave a fantastic talk. Sorry I don't know his name, but smart very progressive talk, relative pertinent to our lives in the US. I was looking at their website, they have many evening programs. At times living a foreign country we Muslims get confused and lose our identity. This is a great supportive community to practice Islam. all the best to you.
