The service was very accommodating given the strange rituals we were performing (checking the colour of the obligatory Tikka Masala using a pantone reference chart, testing the poppadums by dropping a pound coin through them etc). The presence of the club secretary taking minutes throughout and the number of photos we took were all taken in their stride. Reasonably priced good ambience and easily earning 4 out of 5 stars. (I'll hopefully be back tonight, with the family, in attempt to wean them off the Kirthon.)

An especially wet Saturday night called for a curry in town and gave an ideal opportunity to test out The Raj Pavilion. TW's worst Qyper legrandflaneur was due to be in attendance but cried off because he 'didn't feel awake enough' and so we soldiered on accordingly and were well rewarded for our staying (out) power. The Raj occupies that happy place between the Gastro-type Indian joints with their poncey nouveau cuisine menus and the 1970s stragglers with their flock wallpaper and prawn cocktail starters. I liked it. They had a blessedly short menu and whilst we hoovered up a fair run of grub, all of it was fresh, oil free and fierily tasty. I had king prawn rogan josh which was solid and a mate eat a herby Goan chilli chicken than was fantastic. The garlic naan will be with me for days and the side dishes were tasty too. What was impressive was that the head waiter came over to discuss each dish with us later. I'm glad I'd paid attention!!! He really cared & was keen to talk about their origins and preparation too. Beyond removing the flock wallpaper, The Spice is still very much the 70s/80s generic Indian I remember as a boy. All the old faves were on a menu alongside a grid of various meats and sauces which allowed you to get what you wanted in an uncomplicated fashion. It felt like a local or village restaurant in that they were running a healthy take away trade alongside a client base of the more regular TW people. Pleasant service, tasty and unstodgy. Nothing fancy but does the job............. Special mention must be given to TWs newest Qyper 'legrandflaneur' who was due to attend: True to his name, he didn't get up in time to make it!!!!!!! For me, it's the attentiveness and quality of the food, their ability to make a curry however you want it, the fact nothing is too much trouble for them and the specials they come up with occasionally surprise the most experienced curry eater. This little out of the way friendly eatery has a special place in my heart and I will be coming here until I'm old and grey. Try the shatkora for an interesting change or the lamb naga if you like heat. Don't be bashful about asking questions, these guys love to help, if you don't see your favourite on the menu, ask them. The curried lamb was stew like, lacking in both spice and taste, and the peshwari nan coconut-less. The sag aloo was OK & the pilau rice copious & tasty but it didn't save the day. Worth a visit if you're drinking in the pub but that's all, I'm afraid. I'll challenge anyone to eat the large portions and Kiran is only too happy to box up what's left for you to take home. Kirans food philosophy is to serve dishes without food colourings or swimming in oil. I certainly recommend trying Bombay Fusion for a different Indian experience.
