There was a gent there today when we stopped by and he opened the main gates for us so that we could get pictures. The building itself is closed and secured. If you stop by after hours and the gate is locked, you can still get a good view. So, what's this about? The Troy Gasholder Building dates back to when coal gas was manufactured and it needed to be stored so that it could be used later to light streets and homes. The building has a brick structure and the tank inside (not there, as far as I know) was 100 feet in diameter and 22 feet high, which would store 330,000 cubic feet of gas. Today, it's next to a repair yard and in the middle of a neighborhood of brownstone looking homes. There is some street parking. [Review 11508 overall, 1288 of 2019.]

I was heading to Troy for college check-in duties, and made sure that my itinerary would allow time for a stop here. The monument can be found on a paved path between Knickerbacker Park and Lansingburg High School. This is a 2-sided monument that describes Troy, New York's surprisingly glorious contribution to the sport of baseball. You can learn about Troy's early history as a (pardon the pun) major player in the development of the sport. Ever hear of the Unions of Lansingburgh? Well they were a Troy -based baseball team from 1866-1870. Ever hear of the Troy Haymakers? Well they were a baseball team in 1871 and 1872. Ever hear of the San Francisco Giants? Yes, THOSE San Francisco Giants. The team can be traced back to Troy New York via the New York Gothams who became the New York Giants who became the San Francisco Giants. The team name "Giants" was derived from the unusually tall players who left Troy when the team disbanded, to join the NY Gothams. OMG was this a wonderful monument! And I haven't even written yet about the five Hall of Famers who played for a Troy team between 1879 and 1882, and the 2 Hall of Famers who were BORN in Troy. Ever hear of the famous baseball poem about a double play that went from "Tinkers to Evers to Chance?" Well Johnny Evers is one of those guys from Troy. All seven of these Sons of Troy are commemorated here. The HOF plaques for Troy born Evers and Michael "King" Kelly are also reproduced on the monument As a crowning glory, the monument lists every Major League Baseball player born in Troy - from E. P. Beavens in 1871 to Rudolph Meoli in 1971. There is a line in the movie "The Natural" that has always resonated with me. Robert Redford's character softly says, almost in a reverential whisper, "God, I love baseball". Anyone who feels that way has to see this incredible monument.

But the water is great and I've never gotten sick from it. When I was in Saratoga in April 2024 this spring was still turned off. The Big Red Spring inside the Race Course is back on as of June 2024 and I think the taste of it as about as close as you are going to get to Hathorn Spring No. 1

This is one amazing sight!…read more It's a gigantic granite monument that rises up nearly 100 feet high in the center of downtown Troy- more or less where River Street, 2nd Street and Broadway collide. It was dedicated way back in 1890 to remember the soldiers and sailors of Rensselaer County who served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Civil War. You'll see an ornate 4-sided granite base with all sorts of plaques and sculpted panels, a 50-foot granite column, and an attention grabbing 17 foot tall bronze statue of the Goddess Columbia who is standing on a cannonball and holding a trumpet and a sword. Quite the multi tasker she was! Some of the inscriptions on the base include the dates "1776", "1812", and "1861-65" . You'll see the words "To the Men from Rensselaer County who fought for Their Country on Land and Sea." The bronze sculpted panels are gorgeous -you'll see infantry, cavalry and artillery scenes and a sweet picture of the naval battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac (look at the way the artist captured the motion of the waves). The monument was rededicated in 1991 and has a place of honor in downtown Troy, which was vibrantly alive when I was there yesterday. Downtown was crowded with a terrific Farmers Market.

I have psoriasis and it can be a real bitch sometimes. I have kind of a rare type that can get…read moretriggered by a variety of things. Stress can be a trigger and breaking off an engagement qualified gloriously and I had an outbreak this last summer. I'm here to tell others who suffer with psoriasis that you can do something about it! I've been able to get rid of it almost completely and I can tell you that there is hope. One of the reasons I choose to live in Saratoga is because of the springs. I believe a place where water springs forth from the earth is a place of life. So during my psoriasis flare up I visited Old Red and drank deeply. Old Red or Sleeping Beauty has a high Iron content and since the Revolution people have visited the spring as it's known to help skin ailments. I'm not saying that Old Red cured my psoriasis, but it was a piece of the pie. Deciding to get better is the first and often hardest step to take. Disease can be just as much mental as physical and sometimes you have to choose to love yourself even with your faults and know that things in life change but you will make it through even the hardest things. Healing is life. Living is healing.

I was working on my thesis and a custodian knocked on my table for me to turn my music down. I informed him that they were loud because all of the people there were talking. I kept working but shouldn't he have said something to the people who were distracting me in the first place? Perhaps, he should've stayed in his lane. I swear I hate that I pay taxes in this community. I seriously rather drive an hour to albany for a place to work. Oh and you can't drink coffee here a major blow for me especially during finals.
