Wow, what a great place to camp! My family goes camping all the time and when I found out they were…read moregoing to Rend Lake I knew I had to try to join them. I drove out a day after them but since the drive from St. Louis is only about an hour and a half, it wasn't a big deal at all. The drive is pretty boring, but once you get close to Rend Lake the scenery is beautiful! I saw a few deer and the lake itself is gorgeous. Five stars because this place is everything I want a campground to be: clean, pretty, spacious, and quiet. Each of the lots are really spread out so even though we were there with other friends, we had our own area (which is nice in the morning when you roll out of bed looking like you were attacked by a wild animal.) Our lot was really close to the lake, so we went down there a few times to fish. That was until I heard people were getting fined $500 on the other side of the campground for not having an Illinois fishing license. I reeled that baby in fast and vacated the premises, but if was fun (and peaceful) while it lasted. They have a shower and bathroom area that's pretty nice if you need it, and there are a TON of playground areas so the little ones can run off some energy. Wind down your day with a huge fire in their oversized fire pits, and just take in the beauty of the place. Thanks for a relaxing weekend, Sandusky! (Good lord that's an unfortunate name now-a-days.)

My family and I have camped at Rend Lake many times. We just got back from another camping trip…read morethere, and this was our first time staying at the North Sandusky campground (we usually stay at the South Marcum campground) . We stayed at site # 118 and loved it. The entire campsite was surrounded by honeysuckle trees/bushes and it smelled a m a z i n g! There is only one other campsite next door, which, is a good distance away...directly in front is an open field w/ a playground, then the lake (fishing at this part of the lake is do-able, but, not really for kids...unless you don't mind restringing their pole every time they snag it on trees or logs in the water, etc). The other side and behind the campsite is just woods....so you have a lot of privacy. The bathroom was a short walk. The showers are a bit away, but, they are super clean and the water will get nice and hot. The attendants at the gates at Rend Lake are friendly and helpful. A quiet campground, great for families....nobody playing loud music or having parties all night. The bike and nature trails are beautiful. The lake is clean and just gorgeous. Be sure to visit the dam near the South side of the lake...its pretty cool. There is also a little camp store right outside the campground for firewood, ice, etc. I absolutely LOVE Rend Lake, and I don't have any desire to camp anywhere else since finding this place years ago...
