My husband called this location today and the woman he spoke to was very rude to him. He is visiting Baltimore and heard very highly of these cookies and when he tried to purchase these today he said the woman on the phone was "appalled" that he expected to just come in and pick up cookies. He said the Google reviews were horrible and that basically the woman told him he was not going to be able to purchase cookies, period. OMG--I am a sugar junkie (sometimes) and the burger cookie is like crack to my inner crackhead! I've been working in the Baltimore area for years, andI've seen and heard of these ugly little cookies. I always thought they looked like overkill...hard little fake chocolate cookies. I always equated them with something gross like ho-hos or twinkies (that I loved when I was a kid, but now--not so much). But, I finally tasted one during Christmas and I heard angels singing when I bit into one. At 39 years old, these are still my favorite cookie. I grew up walking to High's getting mom some smokes, milk and Berger's cookies. Making our way further into the market our next (and last) stop at the Market was Berger's, a nearly 175 year old family owned bakery known predominantly for their German Vanilla Wafer cookie topped with thick fudge. As opposed to trans-fat as I am, I figured I should give the cookie a taste given its longevity and fame - for $1.25 we received two of them. Tasting largely like a soft sugar cookie topped with a rich ganache of pure fudge there was certainly nothing wrong with the cookie - it was good, as good as a Black and White cookie minus the white can be, I guess - but for the gram of trans fat and 140 calories I'd sooner have eaten something else. read more

Pay no attention to the address or phone number on Yelp. I heard so much about these cookies that I was very eager to go to Berger's and try some. Trouble is that Berger's isn't a bakery/shop it's a bakery that sends their cookies out to select stores for sale like Royal Farms mini marts and Giant supermarkets, or mail orders them directly to you (I also hear you might be able to get them at the Lexington Market). I went on a pretty extensive search going to various supermarkets and mini marts before realizing there are only a couple chains that carry these things. I finally found them at a Royal Farms right outside Baltimore and tried them (it was only around $4 for a box of them). These cookies are fantastic. The cookie part (which is similar to a black and white cookie) is basically just a foundation on which is built a plethora of chocolaty goodness. The top isn't a regular frosting it's more like a middle ground between fudge and a soft brownie and it's as my friend put it "God in cookie form". I goes perfectly with a glass of cold milk. Forget the blue crabs, Berger's cookies are Baltimore true treasure. read more

This review is specifically about the customer service here, not the cookies. I ordered a tin of cookies online, to be delivered to a suburb of Baltimore (maybe a 30-minute drive from the factory). I thought it was crazy that the shipping cost was $13 (over half the price of the tin of cookies themselves) to ship to such a close location, but purchased them anyway because I wanted to get something delivered fast to someone as a gift. The shipping times link provided on their site said it should be a 1-day delivery. They were finally delivered a week later, and when I called to ask for a refund of the shipping cost, the woman I spoke to was very rude and basically said, "Well, they delivered eventually so you got what you paid for. I don't know what to tell you." Sounds like someone in a previous review spoke to the same woman. They just lost a customer, and I will tell everyone I know not to purchase cookies online through Berger. Really disappointed. read more

I ordered some cookies for a friend out in CA. Placed the order online, and days later, have not received a confirmation that the order has shipped. I called and spoke to someone named Trina about trying to find the status of the order. She said she could not help, but would fax the office and have someone get back to me. Hours later, no one did. I called back and spoke to Trina again, and told her that no one has called me yet. She said she would let the office know. I asked when someone would get back to me, and she was very rude and unhelpful. No one has called me back yet. The cookies are awesome. The customer service is HORRIFIC. I ordered 10 boxes of cookies - yep, $77.00 worth of cookies and was so excited to give them as Christmas gifts. What I received - 10 cookies. I have called and emailed and have never gotten a response. I called their order line and asked for customer service and the woman told me "They dont' have no service" - truer words have never been spoken! I called the owners - no response at all. The complaint mailbox is full and has been for weeks. I don't think these people care at all. Since I'm originally from Bmore, I've eaten Berger cookies since I was little. I can't imagine that anyone wouldn't love these cookies. growing up in MD meant 4 things: Utz chips, Tastykake, Sons of Italy Italian seasoning and Berger cookies and cakes. Utz and Tastykake have now expanded to NC so it is easy to find these and the Italian seasoning can be ordered on line for a reasonable price so that took care of that. Bergers cookies though is too expensive to ship so when my husband and I recently took a trip to MD, we stopped at a store to buy some cookies and a cake. Unfortunately, the store did not have the cakes but did have the cookies which was expiring in 2 weeks. I still bought one package and I must say that I got myself all hyped up for these cookies and looked forward to buying them and was disappointed. The Berger cookies I remember from just a few years ago when I was in town and bought them were better than the ones I purchased today. The cookies are not as big as they used to be and the fudge topping was the same thickness as the cookie. The taste is also different so I am not sure if the recipe has changed or what but after so much expectation, it was a huge letdown. The fudge topping used to be piled on and almost twice as high as the cookie, thus the reason I loved them. Now they are just like any other ordinary cookie to me. It would not have been so bad if you had to do this to cut cost, but the cookie prices have gone up but the taste and quality of the cookie went down. Disappointed so now I will just have to find another cookie to replace this one at a more reasonable cost. I also tried to email the company but the email keeps getting sent back as undeliverable and when you call, the people on the phone are either or just brush you off. So as much as it pains me to say this, goodbye Bergers cookies. They are just not worth the calories to me anymore. read more

I am a Brooklyn, NY transplant to Maryland since 1968. Have never had a Berger cookie but saw them on the show "The Talk" when they had them for the audience and for their special guest the actor who plays "Will" on the series "The Good Wife", apparently he is a Baltimore native...I tried them yesterday and all I can say is WOW - they are out of this world but I only bought a pack of 2 in the Giant for $1.69. Not something I would eat every day but probably reward myself with every few weeks...(am very health conscience.
