Berger's Bakery aka Markey Bakery is nostalgic for all the reasons people love American baked goods including cake slices, cheesecake, pies, cookies, and especially the famous Berger cookies which I believe are prepared fresh daily. The stand reminds me of the iconic cookies vendor you see at shopping malls in the DMV. For what it is worth, the baked goods satisfy your sweet tooth despite not being the best quality. The customer service was good and the staff were helpful. The bakery is located in the Lower Market on a corner stand near the Eutaw Street entrance where there is plenty of space. Overall an OK experience. I will certainly return to try more of their cookies.

Got a Berger Cookie after reading the hype about being a must try for visitors in Baltimore. I guess it's okay? Nothing special, just a sugar cookie with some dense chocolaty goodness on top. A must try? Probably not, but still good.

I've had the Berger cookies 'fresh' and in the 'box', but I actually prefer the boxed cookies. The 'fresh' cookie was a little stale and uneven. All in all, the cookies are good, but certainly very sweet and there is more fudge icing than cookie itself. I also got the bean pie ($5), and it was refrigerated, which I don't know if that's normal or not. First time having bean pie, but it tasted along the flavor profile of a sweet potato pie.

The snickerdoodle cake and the strawberry crunch cake is my favorite. It is the best cake I've ever tasted in my life!

Top - butter pound cake, $4. Bottom - strawberry shortcake, $5.

Berger's is famous for their cookies, but don't skip out on their cakes. The family brought a slice of butter pound cake, lemon pound cake, carrot cake, and strawberry shortcake. Each slice was hugh, but inexpensive. Each slice was moist and full of flavor. We tasted the butter, the citrus, and the spices in each designated cake. The carrot cake was not overwhelmed with frosting. Counter help was friendly and efficient. Berger's is on our return list for sure.

This cake is the bomb. I promise you it tastes amazing. I've had their sheet cake but prefer the old fashion ones better. The line usually moves quickly. The customer service is not top tier. Like the man never speaks just says your total. They are the first business as soon as you enter so you can't miss it. There is no seating for this vendor.

What can I possibly love more than the combination of 52 years of LOVE and baked goods? Literally, nothing. Market Bakery has been locally and owned and operated by an adorable couple since 1972 selling a plethora of delicious baked goods, including handmade desserts, like sticky buns, and freshly delivered Berger cookies. That is 52 years of LOVE. Amazing. If you are not a Baltimore native and have been deprived of Berger cookies, please alleviate your significantly limited sweet tooth and try a Berger cookie. Essentially a Berger cookie is a thicker sugar cookie dipped into special German-recipe thickened fudge. If you are not a chocolate fan, that's okay! Buy one for your best friend who is. Better yet, if you are looking to propose to a chocolate lover, buy them a Berger cookie to sweeten the deal. Only give them the cookie IF they say yes. Berger cookies are made with love for chocolate lovers. They are then sold at Market Bakery owned by a loving couple for 49 years. It's a love fest all around. Berger cookies are a favorite of mine and, as a food driven individual, is the reason I chose to go to school in Baltimore. Market Bakery, though, is not characterized ONLY by selling a Baltimore staple. No. No. They are a full bakery with anything you could want. If you are looking for a birthday ANYTHING, call them! I was torn between the delicious piece of chocolate velvet cake layered with cream cheese frosting and the extra-large sticky bun topped with caramelized pecans. I opted for the sticky bun, and two FRESH Berger cookies for a total of $5.50. That is a deal to me, in the world where coffee costs the same amount at nearby coffee chains. Market Bakery has everything sweet and wonderful to sell. It is such a pleasure and an honor to meet a couple that is so dedicated to each other, and their business, for such a long period of time. The staff are friendly. The atmosphere and bustle of Lexington Market contributes to the uniqueness that is Market Bakery. While the business has been owned for 49 years, they haven't always been at Lexington Market. For more history, stop by and meet the owners. They are inevitably working, smiling, and distributing sweetness to the community of downtown Baltimore.

Where have these cookies been all my life? Stopped in after a quick bite at Faidleys. The Berger cookies are phenomenal. I tried a few other cookies that looked good but unfortunately weren't. I will only be buying the Berger Cookies from here going forward lol. They charge by the pound with different cookies having different prices. The staff was also very helpful and kind. They even through some complimentary cookies.

The best bakery I've been to in years. It's inside Lexington Market which is bustling with many locals and a few tourists. I purchased a few items that I personally got to try as well as a few for friends (snickerdoodle cake, berry penny pie & eclairs) that I was told were delicious (and perfectly priced). I tried the following & would get each one often if I lived in the area: 1) Bergers Cookies - I got the pre boxed ones for $6.99 (had about 8/9) cookies in it. They were unlike any cookie I have ever had & I'll have dreams about them: soft cookie with delicious fudge topping. 2) Cinnamon Roll: the dough wasn't too sweet and the frosting & caramel swirl on the top were epic. I almost didn't want to share it! $3.50 3) Apple Penny Pies: flakey, nice chunks of apple, not too sweet, delicious: 2 for $1.75

Bergers bakery is known for its bergers cookies, but they have so much more at their bakery - and it's all to die for! I've had quite a few different desserts here, including their lemon filled donuts, oatmeal raisin cookies, chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, chocolate cake and Apple fritter (don't judge me ). Trust me, everything is amazing and clearly made fresh. I normally order their desserts for work parties, and they are always timely and helpful! Recently I ordered a birthday cake for some coworkers. I got a half sheet strawberry shortcake, and it was absolutely delicious! There was none left, and for $80 this thing was GIANT. The bakery is owned by a sweet couple who've been there for decades, and they always deliver amazing service. Visit Berger's soon to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Little stand inside Lexington Market with various cakes (sold by slice, half cake, full cake) as well as pastries and baked goods. Hands down the best strawberry shortcake I've ever had. Home made cream and a half cake is only $8.99. Cake is the perfect amount of sweetness to balance out the strawberries. Texture is fluffy. Overall perfect. The famous Berger cookies are shortbread dipped in fudge. The shortbread is soft and the fudge is also really soft so there isn't a lot of texture. Be warned that the fudge is really really sweet. I can enjoy one but more than that is a bit too much. Definitely stop by to try the strawberry shortcake, everything else is worth a shot too!

Located in a cute "out of date" market. I noticed a couple reviews emphasizing that the market was in an unsafe area, so I ubered there as I was going by myself. It ended up being totally fine. I walked back home. I did go during the daytime though, so I can't speak for at night. -- I got the snickerdoodle cookie, Berger's cookies, and the strawberry shortcake. All for like $7. So for one their prices can't be beat! The snickerdoodle was probably my favorite, shame I only got one. It is reminiscent of insomnia cookies though so if you're closer to Fed Hill just get insomnia. I got the strawberry shortcake since another yelper said it was the best one they'd ever had. Unfortunately the best strawberry shortcake I ever had is still the one I had in my kindergarten class. I've spent years trying to recreate it and hoped this one would do the trick :/ Spoiler alert it didn't. It was still good though and a very generous size for the price! Now for the Berger's.... Hmmm hahah. I really liked them once I scraped off most of the chocolate. It tastes like hardened store-bought chocolate frosting lol and it's a thickk layer. Before I scraped off the chocolate I could only eat half of one before I had that sweetness overload feeling. I'm also the type to scrape the frosting off cupcakes though if that helps clarify? So I say it's worth stopping by Berger's Bakery if you're in the area... probably not worth it to go out of your way though.

Arrived in the afternoon during a busy weekend and decided to take out for desserts. My first visit and was underwhelmed by the service received. Rushed and transactional. Packaging was very sloppy and my napoleons were shoved to the side, making the clear clamshells very messy when I arrived home. If only the desserts were saving grace, but was left disappointed as well. As others have mentioned, the pastries do not taste fresh. The ricotta cream in the original cannoli tasted warm and gritty, the shell was stale. I noticed these were sitting out. The puff pastry in the Napoleons were soggy. The cream puffs shell was stale and chocolate topping was super sweet, unfortunately these were far from heavenly. Maybe another day, Vaccaro.

The vibe inside was relaxing. We were here for a few hours enjoying our coffee, tea and desserts and it was a nice place to pass the time on a cold, freezing day. The thing that dropped the review was basically the coffee and desserts. The coffee was fine, but just your standard coffee that you'd find at any gas station. The cannoli was overly sweet and the cookies we ordered felt stale. Interestingly, they charge more for sit down desserts vs. takeout. The servers were very sweet to share that we could order takeout and not have to pay the extra fee. Finally, not sure why, but there was not a lot of heating inside the restaurant. We ate with our jackets on, which was fine. But found that to be a little odd. Nobody seemed to know why they couldn't get the heat on. When it's below freezing, it would be nice to escape the chill. Overall, it was a nice stop. My kids loved it. But it was not without some quirks.

I wanted to get a sandwich but figured the wait was too long. On to the donuts - I liked the blueberry basil and blackberry lime donuts. The blueberry basil flavor wasn't super strong but it was well balanced. The blackberry lime was my favorite - sweet and a little tart. The crobar (croissant-donut) texture was awesome but I did not rally taste the cranberry or orange advertised. The buttercream frosting on top was sickeningly sweet so ended up scraping that off...finally the coffee donut.
