My daughter was bullied in the camp--people putting lotion in her tampons, throwing things at her to be cruel and on and on. I had checked a couple of times to see how she was doing and if she needed to talk to me and was told it was best not to do so, that she was fine. Then I discover that she had been asking to call me and was told she could not. If she had called me, I might have been able to address the troubles and get something done to stop them. It was a bit traumatic for her and she has been talking about it for a year afterwards. I don't know why they didn't bother to follow up. But I would not send my child there again. What a giant amount of money to pay for a child to be abused by troubled kids.

The whole camp program helped her become the amazing woman she is now - being in community and nature for these few prized weeks a year cemented her independence and positive outlook. Working was a little more challenging, but instilled such competence and appreciation for the spiritual aspect of community. Now my youngest has been attending for several years and loves his time there, being outside and making new friends. He doesn't even complain about being without electronics for the two weeks - he's too busy to miss them!

She went through CIT and was advised to apply for the following year. She was given the run around after she did everything she was told to get hired and never received a call back. We were blessed with beautiful May weather which allowed us to partake in all of the whimsical delight Camp Horizons has to offer which includes: - Impromptu games of gaga ball - Watching fish jump out the crystal clear lake - Petting horses, goats, donkeys, bunnies, and more - Reading on the cabin porch - Letting loose in a flower and herb garden and creating living art - Flexing archery skills - Swinging from a tree - Skits and s'mores around a camp fire - Whispering from a bunk bed ... and so much more! As an adult, it was so wonderful to see kids being kids. The staff was wonderful, kind, and patient and my super picky daughter RAVED about the food. I even saw her try things she would not touch with a ten foot pole here. I guess that's camp magic for you!

We sent our 11 year old son to Camp Horizons for the first time this summer. He's super shy and…read moredidn't want to go, but we felt he needed an experience away from us (and screens!). He struggled at first with homesickness, but adjusted well with the support of his counselor. He came home talking about his new friends and the fun he had with the various activities. He enjoyed the food as well. There was some amount of roughing it (said the showers were cold and the cabins small) but it is a rustic camp, after all. As parents, we thought the camp was very well organized and they regularly posted pictures on the parent portal. My son is even open to the idea of going again. That may not sound as impressive as my saying that he's begging to go again, but it's a huge step forward considering that earlier this summer, he was threatening to barricade himself in his room to avoid going.

This camp is did everyone. The campers have activity packed days filled with swimming, competitions and a weekly day long special trip. My son has climbed Old Rag, swam in the Rapidan, fished and many other things. This camp is simple and fun. No cell phones. Highly recommend this camp.

Summer camp is done right at Camp Varsity. The staff is incredible... welcoming each week's campers and making every camper feel welcome and help to build the anticipation of endless fun. With no electronics and only "snail-mail" to keep in touch, the kids really get a chance to develop independence and build life-long friendships.
