My ex-wife brought me here as a "special birthday treat" some years ago; this may illustrate why we are no longer together.
A pleasant enough set of ruins and mounded earth; not an awful lot to see, but good to wander round on a bright morning. Definitely not worth a special visit, but nice enough to potter round if you happen to be in Berko with a spare hour on your hands, or need to amuse a youngster for a bit. read more
Jumped off the train with a little time to kill travelling back up north. I will stress, that it is castle ruins, not a big fat juicy castle, but, there's good enough history, and the ruins themselves are interesting to kill an hour.
The sort of place my parents would take us for a walk and a picnic and a little bit of education. It's a good example, but not extensive enough to occupy an antsy child for a full day! read more
Firstly - don't make a day trip out expecting to find a full mortar and stone castle standing in the heart of Berkhamsted.
Having said that, the Castle Ruins - as they should be more aptly refferred to - are still very interesting, and it provides a great place to take the kids out for a picnic and a game of run around or football.
If you're interested in learning more about the history of the castle, there is a very knowledgable gentleman who lives in the house on the Castle grounds, and in our experience, is always happy to chat about the castle. read more
