Bertie Dog Training provides owners with an insight into the minds of their dogs - something which is not always known or taught by other trainers, yet has proved essential to effective training. Nij's clear understanding of canines and canine behaviour shines through in every class and enables each owner to become attuned to their dog's individual needs, strengths and weaknesses, allowing them to establish the most effective methods of training their individual pet. Bertie dog club has a hands-off approach, where the dogs learn from reading signals given by their owner in a way they can understand (thanks to direction from Nij) and not by being forced into positions such as the 'sit' (as you will often find with other training groups). The dogs are encouraged to think, and given positive reinforcement as and when they need it, producing dogs that are happy to work for their owners, and therefore making brilliant obedient pets. Nij and Jo provide excellent support for every owner, and a wide range of services including 1-2-1, home visits, and puppy socialisation. Their experience is clearly demonstrated to everyone who meets them and so makes it easy to trust them as trainers. They are both extremely approachable and open to any questions, however stupid they may seem to you! Friendly, knowledgeable and successful, you'd be hard pushed to find another dog club as good as this! Well done Nij and Jo! read more

We started training with Bertie Dogs with our first dog, a golden retriever puppy and have been going to a class every week since! Despite reading numerous books and trying to research online when we have a problem or a behaviour we can't resolve, it is very hard to apply because you can't tell what mistakes you are making yourself. Working with Nij has helped because, understanding the way dogs think, he can spot the slightest, movement, gesture or facial reponse the dog is making and use that to predict their behaviour in response to whatever we are doing - this means he can tell us why the dog is reacting the way they do, and how we can change our own behaviour to achieve the desired result, something which we would never be able to work out with just books! We have completed the puppy course, and are now attending the intermediate course for the third time, and we are still learning new things and gaining a better understandng of why our dog behaves the way she does. We have repeated some exercises through the repeated courses, but learned new ones too, and to be honest, practicing at home we wtill manage to make big mistakes which can then be picked up when we repeat an exercise later on in class. Hopefully at some point we will be competent and confident enough to train and control our puppy on our own, but until then, we will keep up with the Bertie Dogs training! read more

My Springer Spaniel Ben was over 2 years old when I started the training sessions with Nij. Previous to this I had taken Ben to another trainer (who was very harsh and rough on Ben) and also bought books and videos to try to help. Although Ben was very good in the house the main problem was him pulling on the lead and ignoring me when out in the fields. I took Ben to the Beginners and Intermediate classes and had some 1-1 training. Nij's method of training is very gentle but firm, really the way I see it is that the training is more for the owner to start to understand why their dog is behaving the way they are and think about the way they themselves are reacting towards them. Not being a very assertive person I found it difficult at first but Nij taught me how to deal with this and to be more firm and consistent with Ben. The improvement in Ben's behaviour was amazing, he now walks well on the lead, being a working breed he is still very lively and excitable (which is good) but he is so much more obedient. Nij suggested a few "games" to play with Ben to help stimulate his need to work which really helped. I have no hesitation in recommend anyone to take their puppy or dog for training with Nij, he really has a fantastic understanding of dogs. The training sessions are well structured as well as Nij and Jo making the training fun and not a chore. Many thanks Nij, Bea read more

I had an extreemly timid border collie who would wet himself if a man went near him or if he was in a situation or place he was unsure of and I didnt know what to do to help him, on the off chance I emailed Nij and was asked if I would like to go along with Chewie on a Friday evening after the main class to meet Nij & Jo. within about 10 minutes part of his problem was solved - it was me - I was being a mother and trying to protect him from getting upset rather than letting him find out that he could do things by himself. I signed us up for the beginners class, with patience Chewie was encoraged to do things for himself and progressed to the intermediate class, and whilst Chewie may never be the most confident of dogs he no longer panics in strange places or wets himself when men approach. I no longer have an extreemly timid border collie - Thanks to Nij I have a border collie called Chewie who is a happy and more confidant and hopefully we will continue to progress. I cant praise Nij & Jo. highly enough and would recommend anyone to take thier dog to Bertie Dog Training. read more

I took my young dog (aged 6 months at the time) on the Sheep Socialisation course run by Nij Vyas, because she had started chasing my neighbours chickens and I had little control over her in that situation, and my local obedience trainers had not been able to help me. I was very pleased with the help Nij provided, he has a great understanding of how dogs think and why they behave in the way that they do, and he is able to give the owner tips to follow to ensure sucess and a good relationship with the dog... The methods used do not involve punishing the dog, or letting it get away with bad behaviour, but using pressure from the human's body language to communicate the human's desires to the dog in a way that the dog can understand and respond appropriately to. I only wish I llived close enough to Bertie dog training to continue my dog's general obedience training there on a weekly basis! However, as she is a herding breed of dog, I hope to be back for some sessions to train her to actually work sheep in the future. Thanks Nij, from Lyndsay and Savvy in Cambridgeshire! read more

We;ve had dogs all our lives, but nine years ago we needed help from Nij and Jo with a young collie-lab dog that seemed to be defeating our best efforts to train him. Now, 9 years on I'm so glad we did. In the last year Pip has become diabetic and, sadly, went blind and had to have his eyes removed. Because of his training and because he trusts us we've managed to help him re-configure his world without sight. He is hugely enthusiastic about his walks and generally goes off the lead, even up Welsh mountains. Yesterday I turned round to find him at the top of a six-foot near vertical bank trying to sniff out something or other. He's had to learn some new commands - including 'careful!' - and he's had to learn to 'interpret' rough ground with his paws as well as his brain. It's so lovely to see him with so much confidence and still enjoying life in spite of everything that has happened to him. If we hadn't had all that basic training to start from then I don't think we could have helped him cope now. read more

Sheepdog training with Nij. I take my young border collie bitch to Nij for training to work with sheep. His approach is great... he's calm & relaxed throughout & shows you how to position yourself & the dog in the right place to get the correct response. We both have benefited from the sessions, not only from the working sheepdog aspect, but also getting sensible ideas on how to manage all my dogs (I have 3) at home. Having also watched him train others, I've seen him helps owners whose dogs worry livestock & just want to be able to walk with their canine pal through fields. Its clear that he really understands the dog's mind and I would strongly recommend Nij to anyone who wanted to know how to gain further insight into their pet & manage their dogs in a positive, non aggressive way. read more

Bertie Dog Training has been excellent. I have done the puppy course and some more advanced classes with my spaniel cross collie dog "Oddie" and we have both learned so much and have gained the confidence to continue training at home with much success. This is all thanks to Nij who is able to adapt his training techniques to suit each individual dog and open up ways for us to develop this further. We also brought our working sheepdog to Nij for help as he no longer wished to work. "Scottie" now attends evening classes and is really enjoying just being a dog and is much happier within himself. We are confident that with time he will return to being a sheepdog. Many thanks to Nij and Jo from Alex, Oddie and Scottie in Leicestershire. read more

A friend recommended I go and see Nij after a bad experience with Molly chasing sheep and cornering them. Nij suggested that I should attend his class first as firstly this would be cheaper and secondly Molly could could be taught some basic, then advanced skills over a matter of a few weeks before undertaking any direct work with sheep. This was the sensible thing to do as Molly was better prepared when we finally went to the sheep. Nij was calm and above all he inspired me to be calm around the sheep. Molly reacted so calmly around the sheep, was so much more obedient and the techniques Nij had shown me worked really well. I can't wait to read his book. Thanks Nij from Sam and Molly. read more

We started to attend training with Nij after using a different training group with virtually no success. Ollie ( our Lab / Collie cross ) has since then progressed tremendously, even though he missed the puppy training at Bertie Dogs, perseverance with expert help seems to be the answer! Thanks to Nij & Jo for their help. Keith read more
