At least double the price of what can be had by buying from an online pharmacy. But they have you by the short and curlies. You must have a prescription, to get a prescription you must see a vet and pay for their consultation. Once you have had the consultation you must then pay for the prescription. The prescription only covers one drug, so if like me you need two you must pay for two prescriptions. I still save nearly £1,000 per year by doing it this way, so you can see just how extortionate vet drug prices are in order to still save that amount of money.

My experience of RSPCA Burton is of the public dog-walking opportunity they give on a Saturday…read moremorning. You have to fill in a form (for insurance reasons I presume?) then they give you a dog and tell you a bit of information about it (like 'keep him away from other dogs' or 'he's recovering from an operation so bring him back in half an hour') then you take the dog off for a walk over the fields, down the canal, or wherever you like really (within reason). I think this is a really good idea because the dogs are always so excited to go for walks and it is a massive favour to the staff there. It is also good experience if you are thinking about getting a dog yourself. My friend did try to adopt a dog from there but didn't manage to pass the (very strict!!) criteria which was a shame :-(

He has shown me how to move & stand to encourage my dog to get 'it right' and I end my lessons feeling inspired and encouraged to continue. His new book Sheepdog training & trials' describes the methods he uses & I find it has helped remind me of the different training exercises we cover in the lessons.

He is the only vet there and so you get his full and personal attention (he did take a brief vacation last year when he had a young lady take his place - and she was wonderful too!). Indeed you could imagine a British TV show about this man and his business. Oh wait a minute - that was done already back in the day (1978-1990): "All Creatures Great and Small" The surgery itself comprises a waiting area and his office/surgery. We LOVE the personal service that he gives, so does our beloved little guy "Ricky Martin" our 6 year old Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix born (and dumped roadside) in Houston, TX - thank goodness we found each other!! The occurrence that comes to mind is about 6 months ago when little Ricky (on an extended leash while walking with me) was attacked with no warning by a ferocious German Shepherd (Alsatian) which the owner was allowing to run free (forbidden in the UK) - yes I later found the address of the thoughtless owner, reported him to the police and now he has to keep the dangerous dog on a leash with a muzzle or he will go to prison. However, Ricky was bleeding and we got him immediately to the Doc who calmed him, shaved the area of the bite, studied and informed us that had the bite been 1/4 inch deeper or 1/4 inch to the left the carotid artery would have been severed and he would have bled out on the spot. He explained everything to us, advised why he was NOT going to use stitches, gave us painkillers for the little guy and antibiotics. Follow up a week later and all has been well since he pretty much fully recovered a month or so later. Poor little Ricky will not walk with me through those areas where he was attacked - his memory remains, as does ours of this wonderful, caring vet Two big thumbs up and one little paw up! Would recommend prices-very reasonable especially for the medication if you need any. Our dog had a bad leg and had to have operations. She wouldnt excersize the muscle so guy got us in touch with a water therapy place (swimming lessons for dogs!!) He then helped us claim it back on the insurance. Would recomend 11/10 for the friendly staff and for the quality of service here. Plus they remember my dogs name every time we come in !!

I cannot praise Ashfield House vets highly enough!…read more I use them both for as a volunteer for a local animal welfare charity but also for my own pets. The staff are exceptional and all vocationally driven. From the reception staff to the nurses to the vets - animal welfare is clearly a driving force for them. This is not to say for your own animals care it isn't pricey (which vets isn't!) but I believe their costing to be fair and the quality of care is beyond doubt. As vet care is expensive one thing you can rest assured is they are a practice which fully explain the costs to you in advance and will not undertake unneccesary work for their own financial gain. For those with their animals insured they have members of staff specialised with helping you in your claim. The main site at Long Eaton has hospital status and they are able to carry our surgical work from the routine to highly specialist. Having brought them many trauma and abuse cases through my volunteer work I have been amazed by their expertise on several occassions which gives me greater confidence that should any of my own animals ever be in such a situation, they would be afforded the best possible treatment. Many of their vets sepcialise and if you speak to their knowledgable reception staff they will be able to recommend a vet should your pet need a specific area of care. Their specialist fields included oncology, orthopaedics, dermatology, optholomogy and much more. A visiting pet behavourial specialist also holds a clinic here. They run a number of clinics and clubs including the weight club and the puppy club which are well worth attending. They have a second branch in Spondon and a specialist feline clinic at Bramcote. Most importantly this vets will do all in their power to make you and your pet comfortable. This is especially important at times of stress after an accident or on losing a pet. There is a small car park for clients to the rear of the surgery.

I am a proud owner of one very sweet, very pampered greyhound - he's currently called Dave but…read moreprior to that he used to race at Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium, under the moniker 'Magical Climate'. He was actually quite good - although this is a bit of a surprise to me and my Mom, as he now spends his retirement loafing about on the sofa, begging for tripe sticks and being tickled under the chin. We got Dave from Daybreaks Kennels which is home to the Perry Barr Retired Greyhound Trust and which is run by an amazing woman called Ruth Boswell. Dave was a bit of a state when we first laid eyes on him - without wanting to lay on the schmaltz too much years of racing had rendered him threadbare of tail, gammy of tooth and with what one could only describe as a 'lean and hungry look'. However, with Ruth's care - and lashings of tripe sticks, Dave made really good progress and although I'm obviously biased I think its fair to say he is a really handsome, jolly dog now. As for Daybreaks itself - the kennels are open daily and you can arrange a viewing by phoning ahead. If you're feeling particularly soppy you can also check out their website where you will be greeted by photos of dogs who need a home. This is a brilliant place run by a dedicated, extremely lovely team - they are always happy to offer advice on homing procedure, guidance on the right sort of dog for you and will happily talk to you after you've taken your dog home. As well as the kennels there's a shop that sells collars, leads, beds, food, toys and well...all sorts really.
