The stately castle hotel, part of the Relais and Chateau association, is a welcoming beacon in the Connemara. Adjacent to a trout/salmon stream just a mile from the ocean and featuring extensive woodland walking trails, one can't help but feel at peace. In fact there's an overwhelming feeling of coziness and calm in the spacious suites with a view to the woods and water. Our suite, #36 was so quiet and beautiful it was a treat returning to it after exploring the wild Atlantic way. The two easy chairs with views quickly became our his/hers perches for reflection. Our superior king suite itself was very large with a four poster bed and ample room to spread out and settle in while the generous bathroom with its tub, shower, two sinks and make up desk added to our comfort. With its two restaurants the fisherman's pub (casual) and fine dining Owenmore restaurant one never need seek sustenance elsewhere. The beautiful breakfast that was included provided masterfully cooked to order entrees along with a sumptuous buffet each morning to get you started on your day of exploration. We also enjoyed the beautiful walled garden which is not to be missed and some of the well Maintained walking trails through ancient forest. Exceptional property and lovely (but too short) stay. It's actually one of my favorite places I've ever been to in my life. Being on the island is probably the romanticized Ireland that we all imagine. So just visualize, green hilly fields, views of the ocean, thick "cable knit" sweaters, a Leprechaun House, a bit of mist, a bit of sun and nice smiley people. We booked the b & b through the tourism office in Galway. To get to the island you need to take a bus in Galway to a ferry for a short ride out to the island. When you arrive there are small caravan cars that can take you where you need to go. It cost a few euros per person to take us to the bed and breakfast (b & b). Once we got there we found out that you can pay extra for dinner, which was salmon that night. I'd suggest having dinner there since there is only a pub across the street, which might not be open. Or if the weather is good, you could walk back to town for more choices. The breakfast was typical Irish: bread, jam, bacon, sausage, oatmeal, eggs, potatoes, tea, etc. Our room in the house had a full bathroom, a queen size bed, and balcony. The furniture in the house was homey and cozy, just like being in a friend's house. The island is only 8 miles long, perfect for walking or riding bikes. Unfortunately, the day we got there it was like a hurricane. We spent the afternoon and night in the bed and breakfast watching the wind. The weather cleared up the next day and we walked to Dún Aonghasa, a prehistoric fort. Truly amazing views. We got so taken away by the island that we got back later than expected and missed the last caravan to town to catch the ferry back to Galway. Fortunately, the owners are really nice people, the husband gave us a ride to town and told us about the island and how he and his wife started the b & b. IMPORTANT: The bank on the island is only open one day a week for a limited number of hours, I think Wednesday, so get some cash before going out there. My only regret, is that we didn't spend more time here. But that means I'll just have to go back! I'll upload pictures as soon Yelp lets me.

We reveled in being absolutely spoiled in this sleeper locale where De Galle once stayed in the late 60s. While the accommodations weren't what one might consider top of the line, they were well-furnished, clean and spacious. Every room but for those occupied was open, providing a true run-of-the-house feel. The food and service exceeded five stars...simply delicious. What fun with potatoes, and extensive vegetarian offerings without so much as a blink. Between the gardens, grounds, and an old nearby cemetery where we sat smoking Cuban cigars and overlooking a bluff, we knew we'd found a slice of heaven. The thought of staying there permanently crossed our minds more than once.
