We ordered some of the tacos to share (they have 4-5 per serve) and I honestly think that these are pretty good for Mexican food on the Netherlands. The tortillas were freshly made and soft, and the mole chicken was flavorful. The downside was the carne asada was a bit tough but still tasty and came with some fresh guacamole. Overall since this place is local to me and the service was so friendly, I'd definitely come back and make this my go to for Mexican in my neighborhood.

Service was prompt and we started off with house margaritas. They were tasty, sorry I forgot to get a picture, we are from Texas, so know good margaritas and tex-mex, these were on par with what we are used to. We also had their chips and salsa, which was good and better than expected as we have very high standards. Our friends arrived and we talked awhile before actually ordering. The place filled up fairly quickly but never got too loud for conversation. My wife and I shared the tacos carnitas our friends had the chicken nachos and a chicken burrito. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. Our tacos were flavorful, tasty and a good portion size. The only drawback, was not enough to deduct a star, was that the pico de gallo was wet enough that the tacos were resting in a shallow soup. Still they were good so no big deal. If you are from Texas and craving Mexican food, this is the place to go, 5 star service and ambience, reasonable prices, and 4.5 star food (so 5 star overall). If you are not from Texas or Mexico, and you want to try those flavors, try this place. Highly recommended, you won't be disappointed. Felize comiendo!

If you are looking great Mexican-inspired comfort food in Amsterdam, Parakeet is a absolute gem…read more It's tucked away in Oud-West near the Foodhallen and has such a cozy, lively vibe. The Food: The homemade nachos are the real deal--super crunchy and clearly house-fried. I highly recommend the pulled pork (The Vondel); the meat is incredibly tender and the toppings are so fresh. One thing to know: the portions are massive! The "half" option is honestly more than enough for one person as a full meal. The Drinks: You can't come here without trying their margaritas. They are perfectly balanced, and they even have a spicy version that is dangerous! I also love that they have a great selection of other cocktails and non-alcoholic options for those not drinking, so everyone in the group is covered. Pro-Tip: It's a small, popular spot with limited seating, so definitely make a reservation if you're planning to visit in the evening. It fills up fast! Great food, big portions, and even better drinks. I'll be back for sure!

My friends and I chatted with the owners, who have loved Amsterdam for years and dreamed of moving here to open a restaurant. It is obvious they put a lot of heart into this place, which manages to be both uber hip and inviting. Also their dog Lucy is just the sweetest and is happy to welcome you at the door. More importantly, the nachos are AWESOME. We tried the chili nachos and the pork, and both were delicious. They told us they make the chips in house, and it shows. So much better than the typical Amsterdam nachos. We also loved the queso dip, which is hard to find here. The cocktails were excellent too. I especially loved the coconut daiquiri, but the margarita was great as well. The prices were very reasonable. They said the drink list is seasonal and I can't wait to try out the new drinks. Parakeet is such a gem and I can't wait to return!

I ran in here to escape the rain and was surprised by how nice and dry the intimate covered terrace is; a wonderful place to sit and enjoy a meal. I didn't get wet at all. They also have plenty of nice seating inside. Ordered the Carnitas Tacos and they were really good! You get 4 tacos with an order. My first time having tacos in Holland. They were flavorful with fresh soft tortillas and had some crunchy chicharron inside, which make them extra delicious. The tacos come with green salsa and onions. I have to say my horchata wasn't the best but I'm gonna give them a pass on it because maybe it's just not that popular here. The good thing is that it was not too sweet. The service was great and with a smile and they were so nice. They gave me such a cute table, even though I was dining alone. It's always nice to watch the world go by on a terrace as you enjoy your meal. The sweet candies that come with the bill are delicious. It's a little pricey for Mexican food (25.50€ for 4 tacos) but this is Holland so I'm not going to gripe. If you're craving some really delicious tacos, this is a great place to try in central Amsterdam. They also have lots of really wonderful looking mixed drinks. Try a margarita!

Their tacos and burritos are far from California or Mexican. However, I will give them another shot at some point to see if they even qualify for a 3 star, but I know one thing is that they are definitely not close to the real thing. I would suggest this spot if you are looking for good service, something fast and ok to eat or looking for a quick inexpensive meal. For the Gluten-free folkes you can order a corn taco to replace the burrito taco.

Not bad, but still deciding…read more As an American expat in Amsterdam and a fan of Chipotle-esque, cafeteria-style, foil-wrapped burrito joints, I had high hopes for The Original California Burrito Company. I've been here nearly 3 years and have yet to find a suitable substitute for my burrito love, but this place may have moved into the top position on my "next best thing" list. I ordered the "Original" burrito, the top item on the menu, but (huge caveat) I prefer my burritos bean free (blasphemy, I know). The burrito was nice and large, the same size that you'd find at a Chipotle in the States. This is an improvement over other burritos I've found here. The wrap was warm and soft, another plus. However, the ingredients, while delicious, were not warm. They were cold, even? This may be because the storefront has no door - it's open to the street, and the cafeteria-style ingredients are then subject to the cold Amsterdam air. The temperature of the ingredients - which in my case was pico de gallo, cheese, guacamole, grilled chicken, spicy sauce and rice - is my only major complaint. I had mine spicy, which - while not eye watering - was at a healthy level. It was very gooey with cheese and runny with sauce toward the bottom - but nothing I'm not used to with foil-wrapped burritos. The guacamole seemed lumped at one spot in the middle. I would have liked to see it spread around a bit more. They offer some unique sodas, brand colas, bottled water and Corona. I asked for a Corona but they were out, so I had a soda. Fine, whatever, but a Corona would have been nice. My burrito came with a handful of chips, which was a nice garnish, but nothing more. The establishment itself is pretty small, even for Amsterdam. There's maybe room for 15 people to sit either at a table or at a stool along the wall, and thankfully the place was relatively empty when I went there at 8:30pm on a Thursday. Take-away might be a good idea. The location is pretty good, in the south Jordaan not far from Dam Square. Staff was nice, and asked me if I enjoyed my burrito after finishing - a nice touch in a region of the world not known for warm customer service :) Verdict time: I give it 3 stars because while I enjoyed it, the ingredients were cold, but that could easily be remedied and make this a 4. But I'll definitely be returning!

We went here primarily for Mexican but its safe to say that the Dutch do Mexican just like the Brits do Mexican - not very well. We were lured in though by the enthusiastic guy on the door. The eating area is massive and as it was mid afternoon it was mostly empty. We sat at three tables before we decided which we preferred! After perusing the menu the waitress came to take our order. We were on to the second person when she decided she may need an pad and pen to take notes! Two of the girls ordered cocktails, and although these took forever to make both gave positive feedback. Unfortunately, when they ordered again they were made by someone else and were virtually undrinkable (for us girls to leave cocktails I think that says it all!) The menu had many of the Mexican dishes listed as starters. However, we were informed that the fajitas on the main menu would be big enough for two. Myself and a friend decided to share the mixed fajitas (chicken, beef and prawn) and get a side of nachos, but to be honest we both felt we could have eaten one to ourselves! Unfortunately, the three meats were mixed together which was a little strange, maybe a Mexican take on surf and turf! The quality of the meat was also a little dubious. We were also only given 5 wraps (an odd number never works well when sharing) so we had to order extra. We were given a side of rice and beans with this that didn't really seem to work. We both agreed we would have preferred more peppers and sauces to add to the wraps. The other girls ordered enchiladas and were reasonably happy with these. We were a little surprised to see we had been charged 2 euro for the extra wraps but seeing as they forgot to add one cocktail to the bill we felt there was karma at work. On leaving the restaurant we noticed the specials board which displayed items such as ribs which some of the girls would have preferred. Its a shame this wasn't advertised or mentioned inside the restaurant. Overall, this seems like quite a touristy restaurant and the quality of the food didn't live up to the hefty price tags.
