I remember when DC2NY was brand new. An adventurous alternative to the Megabus, Peter Pan, Bolt "hayride through hell". Spirited travelers willing to take a chance on an unknown bus company were greeted with chocolate and water, and offered a movie and a pit stop, if the vote went in their favor (which it almost always did).
The type of person who's going to jump into an unknown coach, on Thanksgiving day, is also the type of person who knows that they can put their headphones on while your kid watches Aladdin. They're the type of person who likes to shop camp truck stop sunglasses, and pick up a post card from who cares where (and wishing you were here).
This is where DC2NY loses a star. They offer a fabulous service, and it's always fantastic riding with them, but lately I feel like I'm still on the subway. Lately I've been noticing a spoiled, hurried, self important, non adventurous class of people, are being allowed to steal part of the magic of bus travel from the rest of us. I say instead of voting yes or no on the above mentioned items, we should put it to a vote of who actually gives a damn.
Seriously. Every time the driver asks if the passengers want to watch a movie no less than 15 hands go up (mine doesn't because I fall into the category of people who actually don't give a damn).
Fantastic! By a two thirds majority it's been decided that we're going to have a nice quiet bus ride. Never mind the crying children (who would be peacefully watching "Last Chance Charley" or whatever pap, had we taken our douche caps off as we left Manhattan). It's cool though because now we can enjoy the sounds of the engines starting up and stopping every 40 seconds in bumper to bumper Newark, New Brunswick, Camden/Philly, Wilmington, Baltimore, and DC, metro traffic.
There's nothing peaceful about a bus ride. You could've at least let the kids watch Scar try to usurp the animal kingdom from his nephew. Now I have to listen to children crying, a bus engine, and the crap top 40 earbud rattling of self important douche baggery. Oh what's that, a sleep mask. Awesome!!! I don't even know if "a part of your world" could penetrate such a personal sensory depravation chamber.
Somewhere around Wilmington, these people awaken, startled to find that a 5 hour trip actually takes "5 hours"(slightly longer than your average commuter nap). At this point I get to hear them, almost in unison, make the same high school girl-esque (sorry high school girls for the comparison) commentary about the condition of the galley. Have these people never been on a bus before? That's why it's called a galley.
"Well I'm just gonna hold it", they all say. Guess what $&@! break, you literally are. What's worse is I do to. I'm glad that these people got the opportunity to brag about how they quit smoking in the 80's, and feel really self satisfied. Guess what, I quit $&@?ting my pants in the 80's and I don't feel satisfied at all. Not to mention that this is a violation of the bus drivers state sanctioned right to a break every 2 hours (way to violate the same state law in three different states, twice).
It's cool though, we'll all just spend the final stretch from Baltimore bored, and antsy. Taking a 1/20 of the bus ride to stretch your legs, and wash your hands, would have taken time out of the new clienteles busy schedule of making children cry, napping to lack luster music, and voting against their own interest with the kind of smugness that only having not actually weighed all the possible outcomes could provide.
After all it wouldn't be a trip to DC without a demonstration of how the Democratic process fails us when left to the (raised) hand of uninformed voters. read more
