I posted this review in April but Francesca had contacted my new case manager and I was pressured…read moreinto removing it as per her request. Now that I'm in college, I decided to repost this and while doing so, I noticed an influx of positive reviews, none of which were there before. I recognize the names attached as belonging to former alumni who would visit the house often; this is further evidence of the corruption which I will address later. Before anything, I have to say that Avenues is great as a facility. The staff is wonderful. Each staff member has had substance abuse issues themselves and they are deeply empathetic to the clients. I came to Avenues after spending months lost in the Florida rehab system and Avenues restored my dignity and provided the foundations for a lifetime of sobriety that wasn't overwhelmed by regulations. However, my case manager Francesca undermined this experience. Francesca picks favorites, a suspicion confirmed by multiple staff. Because of my age (18 - 19) and my alternative style, she assessed me to be a 'problem child.' This bias intensified once she found out that I was active in the crustpunk scene, which she was involved with in active addiction. During my stay, I was made to feel ostracized and it had a profound impact on my self esteem and my involvement with the sober community going forward. Here are some examples of blatant mistreatment: 1) I got violently ill while at a friends house and was late for curfew by an hour and a half. The next day, Francesca called me to inform me that I would have an early curfew going forward. This would be understandable, had it not been for the disparity between her my actions towards me and that of other clients. For instance, when a friend of mine did not come home all night, despite her case manager telling her to do so, she faced zero repercussions. There were many times when a client was late for curfew without legitimate reason and had no consequences. During her phone call with me, she yelled at me and continued to do so even after I apologized profusely and began to cry. She also contacted my mother (who she knows is abusive) to express that my behavior was "unacceptable." When I brought this up to Francesca during our weekly meeting, she became hostile and accusatory, so much so that I had a panic attack upon leaving her office. 2) One night I received a call with devastating news about a close friend of mine. I was emotional so I went to the front room as to not disturb anyone. In the morning, Francesca texted me saying that I was in big trouble for making noise. When I explained the situation, she was unsympathetic; she told me that another client complained and I was a disturbance. A client overheard me discussing what happened and commented that she did tell a staff member but out of concern. She did not complain at all but just wanted to make sure that I was okay. I can't go into detail as I don't want to put anyone's job at risk but this is far from the first time that Francesca twisted the words of a client or staff in order to make me feel disliked. 3) Francesca had a staff member search my bag, something that is strictly prohibited in the contract I signed about room checks. During this bag check, a 2mg strip of Suboxone was found. While I recognize how this could be concerning, this was an old bag that had not been cleaned in years and the strip was from when I was actively using opiates, in case of withdrawal. She emailed my psychiatrist and he said that I was prescribed 16mg but I could take less or more as I saw fit. She "misunderstood" his email and I was forced to take the full 16mg. By then, I had been taking 2mg for months. I told her this but she didn't care. She said that if I didn't take 16mg, I would be kicked out. This was 8x the dosage that I was used to. Had this been another medication, this could've been lethal. I sobbed at the kitchen table as one of the staff observed me taking this dose. After, I was nauseous and so high that I almost fell down a flight of stairs. I reset my day count as the high I felt was so intense, it was comparable to the drug I was trying to sober from. 4) When taking the Suboxone, I said some negative things about Francesca. I'm not proud of this but I called her a sociopath, a monster, and questioned what I did to make her hate me. You can judge if her reaction was warranted. This was overheard by cameras and her feelings were hurt so the next day, she called me to let me know that my bags were packed and I would be kicked out. This was an hour before I had to go to court about a restraining order against my abuser. I had a horrible anxiety attack; I was hyperventilating and collapsed on the street. She knew I was in distress but instead of trying to diffuse the situation, she escalated it. She was cold and lacked compassion, telling me that she doesn't care if I relapse. I'm not saying to avoid Avenues solely due to Francesca but be careful.

Going to Avenues was one of the best decisions Ive made for myself and having my family support…read morethis decision was such a gift. I was living in CA and I was ready to move back NYC (where I had previously lived) but I wanted to do it right being that i was newly sober. Avenues took me in and helped me build a great sober community, everyone that works in the house is also so committed to their own recovery and they are nothing short of great support. As for my case manager Francesca, she really is the icing on the cake. I know she genuinely cares about me and the rest of the girls in the house bc she really believes in what's she's doing. She helped me see potential in me I thought was long gone. With her guidance, support and overall believing in me, I have been able to stay motivated in keeping sober not to mention that w the help of her encouraging words I enrolled back in school and am pursuing a career for myself that I once could only dream of. I often joke "i can't wait to be francesca when I grow up." But it's not a joke. If I can make a fraction of a difference in someone elses life the way she has in mine, I would consider that a win. She truly is an inspiration to me, she always picks up the phone and always has answers whether I like them or not. At the end of the day as with anything else, it all comes down to self. You get what you give, showing up to avenues willing, not kicking and screaming I was able to let these people help make a meaningful difference in my life. I am forever grateful to avenues and Francesca will always have a very special place in my heart.
