Jerry! Jerry! Jerry! Jerry! This show was awesome. I always…read moredreamed of being on this show, and throwing a chair or going for a haymaker punch to only be held back by Steve, the bouncer. My favorite episodes generally involved the "Holiday Hell Feast" where they'd invite the midget Klan over with the midget Black Panthers and let them sort it out over mashed potatoes and gravy. The episodes where someone reveals themselves to be a transgender were always good television. Inevitably, people got their hair pulled or a chair thrown. I never made it to the taping, unfortunately. But it was always my favorite thing to watch on TV when I got to stay home sick from school. I heard they moved the taping to Connecticut. I guess there's better freakazoids out there to put on the show. But it wasn't tacky television. There was always the closing thought, where Jerry poignantly summarizes what we've learned and how we can all make the world a better place.

Tasteless talk shows come and go, but one magazine declared this long-running daytime chatfest "the…read moreworst show in the history of television." Loaded with bleeped profanity and guests who aren't afraid to embarrass themselves on national TV. My daughter went to a few of the shows taping, and she said she laughed from the minute she walked in to the minute the show was over. No matter what the shows title was, I would always get a laugh when I would see his shows on tv. My daughter says that he was such a sweet gentleman. Always greeted his audience with respect. May he RIP

So I visited it in her stead (another benefit of subscribing to AfterActionReport.info). Quite simply the best maintained dive bar I have ever had the pleasure of drinking in and an AAR Must Drink. Most dive bars have a fair amount of seed and are in need of some repair, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Not this place, as the spotless tile floor was completely intact, all the swivel barstools (each branded "Richard's Bar" across the back) still swiveled, and the tin ceiling stunning. It's coming up on a hundred years, but the entire joint has been as lovingly cared for as it is cleaned daily. The place has a slight smell of cigarettes. When I mentioned to Joe the bartender, that "I didn't think you could still legally smoke in a bar in this country." He replied "You can't, but people do," as he placed an ashtray next to my beer. All that, and Norm Wendt's brother-in-law bought me a bottle of Old Style because it was his birthday, which was drunk while listening to Steve Lawrence on the jukebox. Norm Wendt's sister then recommended a place for fondue so . . . Located in Old Town, Geja's Cafe is a very romantic warren of a restaurant that offers the best fondue in Chicago. A father/son team ("the Marios") served me the International (tenderloin, shrimp, chicken), a solid Flackhattan and some live flamenco guitar.
