Dr. Gorcey is a devoted master endocrinologist, who always seems to be on the cutting edge of his field, using the newest medical advancements, and eliminating reasons for patients to be nervous about having the procedures done. His staff exudes the same upbeat/positive attitude that resides in him. Each staff member appears to understand the importance their own roles in the entire process and to the patient. Each step, from signing in through recovery was well coordinated and went amazingly smooth. It is so good (and not so common in my experience) to see a medical staff that is so well trained, operates in a teamwork mentality, and is happy to be doing what they are doing. All of this (and the new same day 2-hour prep!) made for another very positive experience for me as a patient.

Those of us who have lived long enough to arrive at the point where we have to submit to medical…read moretests that literally leave us with our pants down and our bottoms up, know the indignities and discomfort of that most anxiety provoking procedure - the colonoscopy. Little can be done to make the preparation and actual event more palatable, but at least it can be simplified and made more humane with understanding of the emotional aspects of the test, and the physical challenges associated with drinking copious amounts of vile tasting fluids, a mandatory clear liquid diet for 36 hours before the operation, and the totally unpleasant process of emptying the lower gastrointestinal tract. Ugh! Gastroenterology Group at St. Mary Medical Center does it as well as possible. They invite you to their office weeks in advance to review the process in detail. Many pages of easy to understand instructions are provided. They record insurance information, and even offer samples of the preparation meds if the patient lacks coverage for this cost. On the designated day, when the effect of starvation and voiding is at max effect, their staff is courteous and compassionate in getting the patient ready for general anesthesia and the procedure itself. Everyone was skilled, patient and trained in low key interaction. From getting into those damn surgical gowns, to setting the intravenous lines in the arm, to nestling the pillow comfortably under the head/neck as you fall asleep, to the gentle wake up back in your personal space with juice and crackers, the flow is smooth and relaxed. That Dr. Barash advised I would likely have to return in five years for another scope almost seemed an afterthought.

I am so disgusted, if I'm calling to come in for other than a physical, it means that I am really sick. What kind of Doctor can not fit in sick patients. I told her after weighing me to not tell me my weight since I have body image issues and don't like to focus on my weight number since it can be upsetting for me. That was the first sign of disrespect. Then she starts mocking my beliefs and morals that are linked to my diet. I tell her I suffer from anemia. She acts like she doesn't believe me and "how could I know that" my previous doctor diagnosed me with it? She then tells me that I do have it and starts telling me I'm malnourished. I asked her for advice on what to eat and she just starts listing things that I already eat. I tell her I'm depressed, have trouble sleeping and she offers no help other than "try Prozac" with a laugh. She then says I'm social and have friends so I'm fine. Completely disrespectful. She asked me if I was sexually active and before I could answer she just said no and writes that down. I tried to explain that wasn't the case but she didn't believe me? Or didn't take it seriously? It was so uncomfortable. I had a lot of concerns and questions about my health and when I tried to ask she cuts me off and tells me "I have other patients" and ended the appointment. What the hell. Don't go to her. My family sees other doctors there and are fine but don't go to Barbara.
