First in regards to jimmy E's comments below. Guy fished the day before and killed it biggest halibut out of 4 boats (16 people). So, he pays for his wife to go the following day. Bad weather big waves and to much wind made it impossible to bottom fish but we did try. I was on the boat with her, and our captain did the best he could given the weather. I have fished at big blue a couple of times and it is wonderful. Staff is great, boats are very nice and Sitka is a wonderful place to visit. Bob was our caption and he was great. However, they are unable to control the weather. Jimmy what an ass!!!!

We just got done with a couple days of fishing with Big Blue. The fishing was not the greatest and slow at times but it was a fun time. We went out with Jesse (aka: Possum) and he was a very good captain for most of the time. When it was slow as we drifted and "mooched", he was an the phone or radio trying to get better news from other captains. Problem was upon arriving home we were shorted A LOT of fish. In fact, one of the days we caught eight 10lbs plus Black Bass and didn't receive any of that in our boxes. When complaining to Karen of Big Blue, she said it wasn't their responsibility and contact the processor. Issue being we paid every thing through Big Blue so it is their responsibility. Later we heard back from her that she went to the processor and found an entire drawer of the fish we were meant to get. Supposedly she will ship the fish down to use but I won't hold my breath. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the processor meant to short us them since those Black Bass are amazing fish to eat and I'm sure they would just sell them to a restaurant or re-sell them. If you get a chance, call and book Jesse as he is a good captain. Don't go through Big Blue because Karen wasn't any help and DEFINITELY DO NOT USE SITKA SALMON SHARES as the processor. They are crooks and will short you the fish you caught. read more

Just finished a 5 day fishing vacation with Big Blue. I must say that they delivered everything as promised. The owner Karen is a very nice lady who greets you every morning at 5:30am with a smile. We didn't get to know her husband Mike as we had another Captain by the name of Bob. Bob was top notch, a really nice guy who tries real hard to make your experience a fun and successful one. The boat was well equipped and very comfortable. The accommodation at the Cascade Inn are simple but very comfortable. The shower has excellent pressure (very important after a long day fishing) and the room had a flat screen tv with cable TV. They gave us vouchers for restaurants and taxis so you weren't confined to your room. I recommend this place to anyone looking to experience real Alaskan fishing. read more

During our Alaskan cruise, our family realized we had an entire Saturday available to try and charter a boat to go fishing before returning home the following day. We soon realized that is a bad idea to try and book a fishing charter in Sitka with 4 days' notice during the busy tourist season. I started by calling the charter companies with the best reviews, and they were all booked. Eventually I called Big Blue, which had one not-so-good rating that warned of short-changing of fish. Running out of other options, I gave it a try, spoke with the owner, and he told me they had a boat available. After hanging up, he shortly called back and said he mis-read the schedule and had an opening on Sunday instead -- a day we couldn't do. His reaction surprised me -- "It's OK, we'll make Saturday work." The boat was at the dock next to our hotel ahead of schedule, and Bob met us -- nice guy; serious fisherman. We were a family of novices, and he took care of us. He was particularly good at maximizing the time the gear was in the water, and communicating with other boats to gauge the fishing in other areas. Weather was crappy, but they had plenty of full rain gear for us, and each of us ended up with a salmon. I was a little worried about the post referencing getting short-changed of fish, but certainly didn't experience it. Big Blue processed the fish to our specifications -- beautiful fillets, vacuum sealed them and met us with them at the airport; still cold when we got back to San Diego 12 hours later. As a stats nerd, I even researched what the fillet weight should be based on the fish sizes, and the total was dead-on. All in all, I thought they were a great operation, and would use them again. read more

In regards to Jimmy E's comments I was on the same boat and there were 15-20 knot winds..His wife was complaining of the rollers, so we we fished in protected area. We were there a total of 4 days and had a great time and caught plenty of different fish. If you only wanted to get a halibut you should have went to the store. Love BigBlue! read more

We definitely got the bait-and-switch on this one. I booked the Cruise Ship charter in advance to our arrival. When I booked I was told that the minimum number of guests for a charter to depart is 3 people. I was traveling with my wife, so we only had 2. I offered to buy the 3rd spot and we agreed that if a 3rd person was subsequently booked I would receive a refund for the 3rd person. This trip was booked as the full-day 6 hour trip and costs $275 per person. I was OK paying for 3 people since the cruise line charged $495 per person for their full day 6 hour trips. When we arrived at the dock in Sitka someone was waiting for us. He had a sign with our name on it. I quickly made contact and we headed toward the boat. It was then that I realized that Big Blue Charters had booked my party with another charter boat. The new captain was told by Big Blue Charters that we were aware of the switch, although this was the first I had heard of it. I would have been fine with the alternate arrangement, except the captain told us he was only available for 4 hours, then we had to be back. Ultimately we enjoyed our 4 hour trip and had a successful catch, but were disappointed that we didn't get to fish for the full day like we had signed up and paid for. I contacted Big Blue Charter for a partial refund since we had already paid for 3 people on a 6 hour trip. My request was for $290 or 1/3 of the original payment (after tax) since 1/3 or our trip was cut short. I was offered $200 and was treated with great disrespect for even asking. I was very disappointed in the customer service I received. What could have been a great day of fishing was ultimately tainted after dealing with poor customer service and paying more than I would have it I would have booked the 4 hour cruise ship charter! ($245 per person). I would not recommend booking with Big Blue Charters. read more

9lbs. of halibut for a 40" fish! Somethings not right. Went out with Captain Jessie from Big Blue and I had a good time. I caught a handfull of coho and a beautiful 40" halibut. At the end of the day I reminded them that I wanted the cheeks and all other edible portions of the fish. When we got home two days later I noticed the cheeks were not there and there was only about 9 pounds of halibut. Called big blue and they gave me the processors number. I talked with Levi at the processors and he said that there were not any notes to retain the cheeks and said that the cheeks would not have been that big anyway since the fish was only 9 pounds processed. I said that isnt right and then he said my captain lied about the size of the fish. I saw the tape, he didnt lie. I let Mike at big blue know what I had been told and have not heard anything back since. Very dissapointed. read more

I fished with Mike Keating, the owner, for a full day in early June, 2014. It was great. All 3 anglers caught their limit of 2 King salmon. After getting our limit, we fished for rock fish on the bottom and caught several more very edible fish. Great day on the water. Memory of a lifetime. Mike is a great captain. It was perfect. The customer service was excellent, they picked us up at the hotel, processed our fish for the flight home to San Diego. I left something on the boat after docking and called them quickly and just as quickly they retrieved my jacket and brought it to my hotel. Mike and his wife know what they are doing and really give you that Alaskan feeling of what it is like to live in Alaska and be in the fishing business. I will definitely go back to Big Blue Charters and I hope it is soon. read more

This is the second trip for me with this charter. When I got home I was very surprised how light the catch was. I didn't even get a slab of king! This will be my last trip with these people. read more

My husband Morrie, son Steve and I enjoyed another spectacular fishing adventure with Big Blue in August. We've fished all over Alaska for 18 years and we always come back to fish with Big Blue. Excellent boats, helpful skippers and deckhands who make an effort to get fish despite the weather, fish proceesed and packed to go to enjoy all year long---tastes like you just caught it. Friendly, accomodating, family oriented---that says it all about Big Blue. read more

Your welcome!! Captains and crew from several of their boats are juice bags. Think they own the water. Motor out of the way to harass other boats. Can't believe their clients put up with that. read more
