Jenna and I having a conversation!
    Lynn B.

We took the tour at 8 pm with Jenna. I'm all about ghost tours and if there is one to be found when we are on vacation sign me up. We walked all through downtown Kona. The history of the town was so interesting and Jenna had lots of things to tell us. I highly recommend if you're in the area to sign up.

Hilo After Dark: My aunt and I had such a good time. We did the Hilo After Dark tour. We had a great guide, Gian, that told us so much and constantly asked if we had any questions. He explained things so well. It was pouring down rain most of the time but he still made our tour awesome. If I'm ever in Hilo again I will definitely be booking another tour with Big Island Ghost Tours and hopefully get Gian as a guide as well. Kona Haunted Hele: I have gone on a few ghost tours but none have been as great as the Kona Haunted Hele was. My aunt and I did the Hilo tour a few days prior and liked it so much that on our same trip we booked the tour in Kona as well. The owner Zach is very passionate about the history of Kona and has so much knowledge about Kona's spirits. During our tour we were able to use different ghost hunting equipment. We were able to connect with some spirits, an experience I will never forget. Not only does Zach teach us about the spirits of Kona he also teaches about having respect for the land and the spirits. Do yourself a favor and book this tour now.

Just an update on the customer service of this man, Zack. Due to the threatening nature of his comments we've had to contact our attorney.

Very dangerous, very rude. They had us meet at a random location 'under a tree' at night and left us. They had all of our contact information and didn't call or check on us or anything. They left us stranded and still have not spoken to us. They charged our card and didn't show up for the tour or supply us with any information. There was a lot of dangerous people where we were and we had no protection or guide to help us leave. Do not do this tour it is an absolute scam. We found out from local people a few days later that they do this all the time and the manager is a very shady guy. It's operated by Zack and Brian, do not trust them.

Captain Natalie and Assistant Anna were fantastic, knowledgeable, funny, and very attentive throughout the trip. Captain Natalie shared interesting stories about Captain Cook and the surrounding lava caves, and she even helped me with my snorkeling gear and inflating the vest. The snorkeling spot near Captain Cook Monument was incredible, and we saw so many fish. They also provided fresh fruit, chips, cookies, and soft drinks. Thanks to Captain Natalie and Anna, all six of us had a great time and would highly recommend this company.

Thankfully, they had space for our entire group for the sunset time (615pm check-in) and we didn't have to wait for the late-late slots. Online booking was easy-peasy (no kama'aina discount, unfortunately). We checked in (parking is street parking and there are several boats leaving from the same area, so it can be a bit of a challenge) pretty easily - there were folks out front directing us where to go for Sea Quest. I decided the $35 for the GoPro rental was a steal compared to trusting my waterproof phone pouch and I have no regrets - you can leave the camera running the whole time and they give you the SD card at the end. It was no trouble to do that once we got there, as I didn't add that when booking. They have a decent gift shop and the keiki in our party bought themselves some stuffed souvenirs. We got fitted for shorty wet suits and prescription masks if needed, and then waited for them to split us into boats and groups. We were accompanied in the water by Wylen (sorry if I butchered the spelling) and Abram, and they had the perfect blend of aloha, humor, and information. Super chill, but you also knew they meant business about Rule Number 1. From there, we boarded the boat, a small zodiac-style craft, for the 5 minute journey to Manta Village. The website made it seem like we could leave things on board, but that really wasn't the case. We left all bags, clothing, towels in a secure room on shore, slippers got collected on the pier, and small things like eyeglasses were stored in a bin on the boat. No trouble, but I wouldn't plan to take anything with you on the boat. Getting into the water was easy, and we had one keiki who was a little apprehensive about everything - they took great care to lower him into the water, and when he wanted to go back to the boat a little early, they accompanied him back to the ladder no problem. There were plenty staff around to help and also identify the mantas by their markings. And there were SO MANY mantas! We had an amazing evening watching them - I lost count and forgot many names, there were so many swimming past. We had 30-40 minutes in the water and we had multiple mantas around us the whole time. I thought the time was plenty - by the time we had about 5 minutes to go, my stomach was ready to be back on land. My only regret is not stretching my triceps beforehand - I was not expecting my arms to be so sore after holding onto the bar around the light board! We paid $135ish plus fees per person (all ages) and it was the highlight of the trip, for sure.

We did a 2 day package encompassing the islands most beautiful waterfalls, nature reserves, botanical gardens, volcanoes, beaches coffee farms on old town Hilo. On our first day with Jason our driver and guide picked us up on time and with a smile. He shared his knowledge along the way wearing a microphone in the van so everyone could hear comfortably. At the attractions he was with us giving us history of all the waterfalls. Whiles driving he told us about the sites inbetween. At lunch time he provided us a delicious meal from a local restaurant. Day 2 with our driver Derek was in another new van that was also comfortable and roomy. Derek took us to a working coffee plantation to see, smell and walk through the farm. At Kīlauea volcano national park where we got to see upclose and personal the caldera in all its majesty. All the time telling the history and recent activity of the volcano. We saw and walked on a beautiful black sand beach with segregated sea turtle nesting area where we saw a turtle swimming ashore and resting at waters edge before digging a hole in the black sand to lay her eggs in preparation for the next generation of turtle, we walked down and into a 30 meter lava tube and got to visualize the path of a whole lotta molten rock traveling through centuries before. Culminating the day's trip by stopping on a mountain top in almost complete darkness, the moon was in a waxing crescent and producing very little nighttime light. We bundled up to stay warm in the 50 degree Fahrenheit temperature to stargaze. It was refreshing in the cold air, outside the van huddled in a group while Derek pointed out, planets, stars, constellations and galaxies as we stood in awe of the majesty above us. Wasabi Tours, Jason and Derek were on-time, safe, informative and most of all fun to spend our time with. I highly recommend taking a Wasabi tour to REALLY see the big island. Thank you all!

They have samples of everything out in their gift shop, and they're doing some pretty fun stuff - we absolutely bought a couple bars (as usual, I liked the darkest and my wife liked the lightest chocolate the most, but they were all quite good.) I'd give the *tour*, which they only do a couple times a week, so we had to adjust our schedule a bit to make it to one, a 4/5. It was interesting, but you don't actually get to see any chocolate being made, a lot of it was just discussion (albeit: discussion while standing in a production cacao orchard - I'd never actually *seen cacao trees in person, they are pretty cool! Cool, but also full of spider webs.) They also cut open a fresh, ripe, not-processed-yet cacao bean at the end of the tour, and we got to try a little bit (it's delicious - sweet and fruity, nothing like chocolate. I wish we'd gotten to eat a bit more of it, honestly.) It was an interesting tour, not sure it was worth the extra planning it took to be there for it though - other than the fresh cacao fruit, you don't get anything you can't also try in the gift shop any time of day.

The color of Mauna Kea with the moon shining on it was so magical all around us. There were some clouds that cleared pretty well by the end of our star gazing. We were the last ones up there so it got dark enough to see more than you'd expect with the moon. Jeff, our awesome tour guide, used a laser pointer to help us see the constellations we usually can't back at home. The images on the digital telescope like nebulas, the moon & star clusters were an amazing addition to have as keepsakes. My husband and I felt he made the tour a great balance of learning and fun. He had the group feeling like family before we even left from the pickup lot. Things to consider: I do recommend following the moons cycles booking this tour/your trip if this is especially important for you to see as many stars as possible. The sunset and views of the observatory's make it awesome anyways :) I struggled with altitude sickness around 12,000 ft. Jeff had made sure to let us know beforehand if we experienced any issues to speak up. I was hesitant as I know it would mean turning the whole tour around, but some tingling turned to dizziness and then a brief fainting. He immediately stopped the bus and helped ground me and make sure I was completely okay & coherent before letting me know our options for the tour. We made it up to the top with 2 more (included in tour) stops and I felt better with each one having more time to acclimate :) Thank you Jeff!! You handled this so professionally and I appreciate your check-ins for the rest of the trip. It's cold even with parka and gloves. It's so worth packing warm shoes and layers. The bus had ac and heat so that was great! Do it if you can! Awe-inspiring! Such an unreal environment that makes you wonder about so many things. Just take the precautions seriously, move slow and breathe deep.

This is right on the cruise terminal port and quite easy to walk to. The check in area is in a hotel called Courtyard King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel. I would recommend to check in early as 15 minutes before your tour departs, they guide you to the water shuttle. Once you get on the water shuttle, it takes you to the submarine. You need to be able to climb a ladder to get into the submarine. The space is a little on the tight side and there are no backs to the seats so work on your abs before the trip! The air inside was cool and constantly recirculating so it did not feel stuffy. Everyone gets their own porthole to look into the ocean and there are fish identification cards in front of you. The submarine can get to 100 ft pretty quickly and I was surprised that my ears did not get plugged up. We saw lots of fish that day. Some get really close to the submarine. We even saw a school of fish! My only disappointment is color. At those depths, everything has a blue tinge so sometimes it was hard to identify the fish. She didn't mention tips, but at the end, she got a lot of cash from all of us because she absolutely crushed the tour. My only nits were 1) finding the meeting place was not obvious because it's inside the neighboring hotel-- not sure if we missed those instructions somewhere. And 2) we donked our heads twice when looking out the viewports when we were looking at some fish-- not because the submarine was moving too fast, we just got excited looking at fish hah. Anyway, some padding would have gone far. Anyway, I know it seems touristy, but this one is actually worth it-- so much that we've done it twice over a couple decades!

I also received a call the day before the tour and the lady answered all my questions. Addison was our guide. Our pick up point was Kona Crossroads Shopping Center. After this, we picked up the rest of the group at Queens' Marketplace. All in all, there were 14 people in the Mercedes Sprinter van (excluding Addison). The van was clean and customized with an area at one side that served as a mini overhead bin. We went to Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station. At its grounds, there was an opportunity to hike a little and see silversword plants (I did not see them though or maybe just did not know how to identify them). We had our early dinner there at about 4-4:30pm which was included in the tour. The veggie lasagna and brownie were good. Since this was about 9200 feet above sea level, I noticed that I easily got short of breath and lightheaded (which is not unexpected). The company provided warm Arctic style hooded parkas and one-time use gloves that kept us warm. We then proceeded to the observatories. A segment of the road up the observatories was not paved and it can be a little bumpy. By the time we got up the summit, the sun was indeed about to set. My lightheadedness and headache improved a little and I was able to enjoy the majestic view of the colorful sky and the clouds. A couple in our tour got engaged at the summit! After the sunset, we went to a lower elevation where we had the stargazing. We had warm beverage (choice of coffee, cocoa, apple cider) that was perfect for the very cold temperature.
