The cutest local honey producer! The honey tasting was lovely and the staff were really informative. The flavor of this honey is out of this world, if I lived on the big island I would buy up so much of their honey! Lots of cute little gift items and gift sets. The vanilla ice cream was very sweet with good flavor. The bees in a hive at the very end of the store were something interesting to look at. Great stop great product reasonably priced, other stores on the island sell this product but at a marked up price, here you are going right to the source! I've been familiar with this company many years, as their beautiful labels on their honey products standout in many grocery stores. It was a treat to actually visit and well worth the drive! Plus just down the road a little bit more is a gorgeous beach park. They have plenty of free parking on the grounds. You can walk around and explore with hives and beautiful plants all over. The main building has a shop filled with all their honey products as well as locally made gifts. The staff were immediately welcoming and happy to talk us through the business of bees. He shows us the hive inside, then took us through a number of different honeys and what makes each special. Prices are reasonable; you can also buy their products in many stores or have them shipped if luggage space is an issue. This is a must visit place on the Kona Coast! read more

This was our second time at BIB, and first time doing the tour! Everyone was so nice, willing to answer questions and chat about bees. While it's not a walking tour that some may initially think, once you arrive, you view a short video of the history of BIB and walk out to a screened off area where you'll watch the hive get opened, learn about all parts of the hive, the work of the females, the mating life of the males and of course the queen! No shortage of opportunities for Q&A as well! It didn't disappoint! The tour is finished off with honey tasting, which is perfect! You get to taste every honey they offer, with of course the opportunity for shopping as well. I brought plenty of jars home for gifts, along with a nice supply in our pantry! I learned SO much about European Honey Bees on this tour, as well as the importance of knowing the needs of other types of bees in my region. Joe was extremely knowledgeable and used the tour to share as much information as possible about the bees they work with and the misinformation out there about various bee populations and beekeeping. Dl'ed the Shaka Guide app and purchased the Kona Big Kahuna Tour. It's like a Hop-On, Hop-Off bus tour in your own car. This place was on the tour. It was so cute! They offered free taste testings of their different flavor honeys. Plenty of parking next to the farm and offered outside handwashing and port-a potties. Never would have seen this place where we were going. So glad we stopped. They had their PHDs in bees and honey. Make sure you check out their store. read more

After our Kayak adventure to the Captain Cook monument, we stopped by to check out the gift shop. We received an educational overview on the types of honey available and were provided samples outside in the picnic area. Reservations are reccomended for the tour, but visiting the gift store and museum can also be educational. We've been coming to Kona for several years. We do the occasional tour, and have to say, this one stands out on many levels -- higher. Why? When you arrive, you are greeted with tea and a wonderful tart, while you watch a very well done video. Then one of the best people we have met in a long time - Joe, takes you out to a colony and explains everything you want to know about bees, honey, sustainability, Hawaii, and life! It's safe - the bees are behind a screen. Joe makes you laugh, but you learn as much as you chuckle. After that you have a tasting of several types of honey, then you walk through a wonderfully curated gift shop - no pressure to buy. One of the owners was also there, and she was just as pleasant, but maybe not as funny, as Joe (look out for the ice cream stash). Seriously good, very fun, and amazingly informative. One of the members in our group was kind of reluctant to go ("I don't want to get stung"). You won't! Afterwords, he agreed, it was an exceptional tour. In a world of endless tour options in Kona for coffee, salt, chocolate, etc., Big Island Bees has moved far and above to the top of the list. read more

What an amazing place to visit! My mom and I loved Big Island Bees so much that we ended up coming here twice while on our trip! There is plenty of parking available, and the shop has several friendly staff members working there. We were offered samples of the different kinds of honey- I ended up buying one of each! If I had to pick a favorite, it would be the Hawaiian Chili Honey, though. They offer many different-sized options of honey, so I ended up buying some little ones to give as gifts to friends and family! It made it easy to bring home with me. In addition to honey, they have a plethora of skincare options, home decor, greeting cards, tea, macadamia nuts, and more. I also tried the lilikoi spritz and the honey vanilla ice cream during our visits here. Both were delicious, but I especially loved the spritz; it wasn't overly sweet. I enjoyed reading about the history of the farm from all of the stuff they had on the walls. This place is truly magical. I would recommend stopping by here on your visit to Kona. read more

What an incredibly fun and memorable experience! The Beekeeper, Joe, was hilarious and so knowledgeable! The area in which we watched him maneuver the bee boxes was well set up .... I felt safe due to Joe's calm demeanor, as well as the screen in front of me. The honey was incredible, as was the tea and tart. Joe is a passionate, knowledgeable and engaging tour guide who brings you up close to the bee hives (behind a protective screen!) to the see how the bees live and work. This was probably one of my favorite tours we did. Not only is the place just beautiful, but Joe the tour guide and bee expert was so knowledgeable and interesting to listen to. We were actually in a group that was several members of a family and us (a couple), so the family had to tendency to talk over everyone and it was hard to get in a question, but Joe always got to us and answered all the questions. Learning about and seeing the bees was truly eye opening (and those cute little pesky geckos wanting honey added their own entertainment). I would give this experience 10 stars if could. It was a phenomenal experience. Joe was the perfect guide/narrator: funny, smart, informative, and deeply committed to his job. He was absolutely great. You start with a short film about bees and bee raising in Hawaii in general. You then go outside and spend about 50 minutes exploring the nuances of bee raising. Joe shows all kinds of different things about the hives that only an expert would know. It was fascinating. At the end you taste test about 6-7 different types and flavors of honey. You can then buy the kind or kinds you like in the gift store. Everything they do is organic and healthy for the bees, people, and the environment. The tour is not expensive, about $50 for two adults and a kid. I highly recommend this tour. It's a bit of drive from Kona but well worth the time and effort. We had an amazing experience with the tour. We learned so much about the bees they raise and how they create all their own products and honey from their own bees! The tour started off with some treats and refreshments, then we learned all about the bees and then we were able to do a taste test! We didn't just learn about their bees but also learned so much about other bees, different practices in place for bees, bee breeding and more. And of course I bought some stuff to take home: honey samplers, chapsticks and a salve. Very impressed and totally recommend this as a stop on your trip to the Island of Hawaii !
