It was constructed in 1886 and lit in 1887 with the intention of directing ships into the Roanoke River from the Albemarle Sound. An inventive answer to the delicate, changing soils of coastal rivers was its distinctive screw-pile foundation, which consisted of steel pilings that were physically screwed into the riverbed. In contrast to the majority of lighthouses of its type, this one was two floors tall and had a lantern tower with a fourth-order Fresnel lens positioned on a corner of the roof instead of in the middle. The Coast Guard sold the lighthouse to Elijah Tate in 1955 after it was discontinued in 1941 because of dwindling river traffic. The building was severely damaged by Hurricane Isabel in 2003, which led to a preservation effort. With the help of the public and private sectors, the Edenton Historical Commission bought it in 2007, relocated it to Colonial Waterfront Park, and repaired it. It now proudly sits on Edenton's port as a museum and a testament to the tenacity of the local community and historical preservation. The lighthouse is free to tour and the "grounds" are accessible 24 hours. It is well worth a stop. Our door was not sealed properly and the light poured through the door at night. Breakfast was a joke. For fruit I got three blueberries, two grapes and a half a strawberry with a half a slice of bread. Our coffee was lukewarm. Our eggs and toast were not cooked properly. It was so bad that even though we paid for two nights, we left after the first night and forfeited the cost of the second night. If you are going to Edenton, stay somewhere else.

February 9th 2021 I signed a contract with the Inner Banks Inn for a wedding that was to take place on April 9th 2022. I also paid a deposit of $4,950.00 to hold this wedding date. April 20th 2021 (only 2 months after signing the contract) my engagement was broken and I formally cancelled the wedding event with Susan Cyr, who confirmed receipt of the cancellation. Upon cancellation Susan stated they would attempt to rebook the date since it was a YEAR away. I was told if the date was re-booked that I would receive a refund and that if it was not rebooked that I could use the deposit funds toward a "girl's weekend." While I called and emailed many many times I never received any follow up on how to pursue booking a "girl's weekend." This business has had 3 managers (Jennifer, Linda, Lindsey) I've spoken to (they get a new one every few months), and Susan has never called me back. I would like a refund of at least half of the amount I paid, I'm requesting $2,475.00. I also have proof that I do not believe they attempted to rebook the date in good faith. My brother in law, reached out in February of 2022 to confirm what dates were available in April of 2022 he was not provided the April 9th date as an option until it was specifically asked for. I've tried calling and email so many times but never heard back from Susan. She's treated me terribly, and I don't want anyone else to experience such heartache and financial loss should things not go as planned.

When we made our reservations, we were asked what time we would like to check in. We told them 2 P.M. When we arrived, shortly after 2, we were told by the person in the office (who we had to wait on for about 15 minutes) that check-in was at 3 P.M. No, problem, we thought. We'll just go explore Downtown Edenton, which is only a few blocks away, and return in 45 minutes or so. We returned around 3:15, only to find that our room still wasn't ready. After waiting an additional 30 minutes or so (in the sweltering ENC heat, mind you), our room was finally ready. We were staying in the cottage, located adjacent to the main inn, and I must say that I wasn't that impressed with the place. It was not up to par with the rest of the place. It wasn't dirty, just old and decrepit. The cottage definitely needs some attention. The cottage is also the place where breakfast is served, which makes it virtually impossible to get any sleep after breakfast starts. The floors in this building creek very badly, and you could hear the pounding footsteps in your room quite early in the morning. We were in Edenton for a friend's wedding, and after we returned from the reception that evening, we were surprised to find that we had been locked out of the cottage by the other couple occupying the second room. After calling the office, we had to wait another 30-45 minutes before someone showed up to let us in the place. I was not happy, to say the least. Breakfast was done very well at this B&B. Its also worth mentioning that the bed in our room was extremely comfortable. There were some bright spots along the way, but overall, I was not that pleased. I think I would give The Pack House Inn one more try, but only if we were able to book a room in the main inn, and not the cottage. Hopefully, their performance will be a little better the next time around.
