This place was surprisingly fantastic. Booked a Sunday birthday here for 8 or so people at noon. Everything from the get-go was easily, the place was quiet, the upstairs area is really cool, staff are really friendly, and the food and beers are all really good. We loved every bit of it. Only annoying bit was they don't do split tabs, but we just opted to individually order at the bar which worked out fine. I'd definitely return. Apparently it gets busy at night but for lunch and drinks it was quiet and great. read more

Big Mouth is cool. Big Mouth is St Kilda. With a great bar downstairs that you can order delicious bar food, the great part about Big Mouth is the upstairs dining and later on on weekends they have DJ's and of course dancing. Food is great & reasonable and service from bar staff impeccable. Bar staff explained each cocktail and were very helpful. On Fridays they have 2 for 1 specials or Cocktail of the night for $10. You have got to go to Big Mouth when you're in St Kilda, its a must! read more

Wasn't sure what to make of Big Mouth at first. Downstairs is like a small cosy pub front-bar, upstairs a large bar with a uni-crowd feel, and there nestled in the corner is a half-closed off small dining room where the staff are dressed impeccably as if ready for silver-service, but the napkins are time-beaten kitchy Aussie tea-towels stolen straight from Nanna's house. When many places are reeling in their weeknight specials, Big Mouth puts out on a Friday, with some great specials. We shared their $15 Friday Fajitas, which were a very tomatoey affair, in a good way. The entree seared calamari was *outstanding*, just perfectly done. Enjoyed some nice wine, with a decent by-the-glass or bottle menu, followed up with a lovely cup of tea each, perhaps turning into nannas ourselves, inspired by the tea-towels. It's a strange mish-mash of ideas at Big Mouth, but it seems to work. It's also incredibly well priced for what you get - we had to double check the bill to make sure we weren't ripping them off, which is a nice change. read more

A destination for all occasions. There are so many little areas here that can cater for any of the reasons why you would leave the comfort of your own home. You can have a quiet drink downstairs or go upstairs and party the night away. Located on the corner of Acland and Barkly, if you are sitting downstairs you have a front row seat to the always entertaining St Kilda. These if have seen some things, if only they could talk. I recently found out when I went to the bathroom that they also have really cheap meals on different nights of the week. I will be going there shortly to find out how good the Parma is. read more

The only time I properly ate here was for a work function on a Friday night. It must have been because everything was pre organised, we had a small function room upstairs the menu was set, the ambience was perfect, lighting dim, crowd not to overbearing. We enjoyed free flowing wine & spirits the whole night. calamari was perfect & wedges were great. First impressions were swell... Probably should have left it at that. On my second attempt many moons later on a Saturday night I found all too much and just left. Its was far too over crowded there were drinks spilt everywhere and both downstairs and the upstairs bar was so rowdy, sweaty & feral I felt like I was at rave. Big Mouth is one of the many bar/restaurants in St. Kilda and is yet to really impress me. I find it hard to get comfortable there and get the feeling like everyone else is a little on edge there as well. The set up bothers me and the food is simple, large and expensive for the type of meals that they are. In a street that has so many options of different cuisines it's hard to choose to go to Big Mouth and it's not like the Vineyard that is very Australian, it tries to be more and I'm not sure it works. What it does have going for it is that it is a big building on the corner so it's hard to miss and is open till late. Several times I've been there it's been noisy to the point you can't hear each other talking at the table and the "pub music" has been horrible. I know it sounds mean but it's a pet peeve of mine to have live music that isn't used as background noise for the people trying to have a nice meal out. Is it too much to ask that I can hear what the person next to me is saying? Anyway, I've tried to go there and have a relaxing beer but have never quite felt right and with so many good quality bars and restaurants down this street it's hard to not try somewhere a little more quiet and comfortable. So they fit the standard list of qualifications: Affordable wine (most under $50) Diverse menu (brekkie, lunch and dinner) Steak night Mondays! $15 But they do it in St Kilda. Maybe because it's at the far end of Acland? I don't know, but the space more than makes up for the 'trek' you'd have to make down the road. Upstairs is the best place to be in St Kilda. You're perched up above the street, and the skinny corner of Barkly and you can watch the sky change as the sun sets, and see the lights of the cars and other shops turn on and zoom by. Great counter seating along the windows, and then comfy couch seating all throughout. Really a club or lounge kind of comfort with a good menu. Steer clear of the expensive champagnes, and full up on the entrees like arancini (made with beetroot, $9.50) and the chips (polenta and parmesan, $9). read more

Big Mouth sits on the corner of Acland and Barkly st, and seems to always be packed. Maybe its because of the location, maybe its because the atmosphere, Im really not sure because whilst I do like it here, I also think there are better places to hang out in St Kilda. The venue is large, but is broken up by the lay out with lots of little corners, and private seating areas, which is actually kind of nice if you want to be a little more secluded. The downstairs set up is a bar/ restaurant, with an upstairs area that is definitely more of a praty and dance space. Ive never eaten here, so I cant comment on the food, but the beer is cold and the drinks are moderately priced. I wish they had more out door seating, and that would probably make it more appealing to me. Most nights they have live acts performing, usually a guy with a guitar or something of that persuasion. Generally the acts Ive seen have been pretty good, but I think the sound is often too loud - its not a rock concert, and the volume of the acts makes it hard to carry on a decent conversation without yelling across the table. With a few minor adjustments, I think I'd like this place abit more. read more

Haven't been to Big Mouth for a year or so but decided to eat here again with all the chaos on Acland Street (construction of the Super Tram Stop)! Luckily it wasn't too busy and could sit inside away from the noise and dust outside! It's warm with background music (easy listening). Ordered a Bloody Mary and the St Kilda Mash! The mash was beautiful (large potato mash, poached egg, bacon and spinach). The Bloody Mary was strangely disappointing - not sure how they made it but looked watered down, tastes terrible and had diced vegetables in it as well as the obligatory celery stick and olive (which had seen better days)! Service is ok but being asked if you're alright when you're waiting for a menu shows lack of attention from a waitress who was only serving 3 tables in a very small room! The magnet that drags me through the week and into the weekend. 10 buck jugs of Coopers may well be the death of me, especially now that happy hour has been extended to encompass 4pm til midnight; the $6 cocktail menu is also a winner- can't go past the Japanese Slipper. With a couple of benches and tables outside, I love nothing more than to sit out there with a few mates, a few jugs, a few cigarettes and soak up the great vibe of Acland St as Friday afternoon becomes Friday night. The Friday Night Club promo is few months old now, and the atmosphere is as good as it gets; great crowd, raffle every half-hour from 6pm onward and most notably, the best staff I have come across in any bar I have visited- huge credit to them and particularly the event manager Fab for the great night she has created. I get down for a beer whenever I am in the area, Coopers is a good drop off tap, and once again- the staff make this place somewhere you want to stay that bit longer. I went here on a mystery date and found the service to be excellent. For dinner i ordered the handsome bird, which was a chicken breast cooked in a cream sauce with onions and mushrooms. When ordering I was unsure if there would be enough on my plate to satisfy my appetite. When my meal came out, it was just enough for me without giving me the sensation of overeating. My date ordered the fish and chips which came with a salad. The fish was fresh, light and delicious. read more

Big Mouth is divided into a downstairs wine bar/cafe and upstairs restaurant/bar. It is a really spacious venue and although it is always busy it is usually possible to find a quiet corner or a table to enjoy the reasonably priced drinks and good menu. The staff here are friendly and the location is really good. It is right down the end of Acland street; thus, there is sort of an entertainment wasteland anywhere beyond Big Mouth. read more

Being opposite the "600 beer" bottleshop & located in discerning St Kilda, you would think that this place would have a nice variety of beers, but unfortunately this is not the case. Delicious food and all served on wooden paddles - why is everything on wooden paddles these days??? Make sure to check out upstairs! I highly recommend the Bloody Mary here. It's spicy, but with a cooling kick from muddled cucumber and basil. On Sundays, it is only $10. I haven't tried the food yet, but the menu looked like the pretty typical pub fare. It's a great location for people-watching on the corner of Acland and Barkly. The tables on the sidewalk are a little awkward but there is also some seating inside that gives you a birds-eye view. Upstairs seems like a whole different scene. I am guessing it is kind of clubby at night. The bartenders have always been very friendly and helpful. The beer selection is not great. Big Mouth has some highs and lows, but is a dependable spot for a Sunday Bloody! read more
