I really enjoy going to this place. Good drinks, good cold beer, great music and a pool table. The ladies room is decorated nicely with super seventies pattern women. Went to Big Star Bar last night. It was neat seeing an old, eclectic place like that. Dive bars really get me going. You just park on the street on W. 19th. Walk in the door and the bar is on the right. Good bartenders, who can make all the libations you might need. There is a pool table in the back. Jukebox for music, then a DJ fires up every now and then. Then, head outside on a good night and you will see the bonfire on the "patio" with a bunch of picnic tables. It's fun to just hang out at this place. On a side note, there was some sort of book burning going on. Tons of people around just throwing books on the fire. That made me think of several old college books I have because the Prof told me I would one day need them. Sure I will, TO BURN 'EM!! Not really sure what it was all about but some guy handed me a copy of the Qur'an and asked if I wanted to toss it in. I said sure, why not. I'm more of a Bible fan myself. read more

This is a fun little hangout, low ceilings, dim red lights, crazy furniture and random pieces you find at a garage sale or dumpster. This is a cool dive bar in an otherwise boring suburban setting. They need this place. BSB draws quite a few hipsters and a strong ink crowd. It's eclectic in the way that it looks like something that Lamont Sanford would make in the back of his pop's place (Sanford & Son). In the colder months, the outdoor fire pit is a pleasant social focal point. The people are chill and the drinks are cheap. The place has a good vibe... if not a tinge of the hipster brand of elitism. Meh -- it's still a good place to throw back a few with friends. read more

My friends and I have been going to local Montrose bars for years. Cecils has been my regular bar and it has been our regular to-go place. However, despite the fact that we had been going there for a long time, we have never gotten a discount, a service industry respite, nothing. We know the bartenders by name, have given them good tips - but still no perks. Then there's the wholly annoying habit of kicking everyone inside the bar at 1:45. It can be quite rude to people who want to smoke their last cig with the last few sips. Clients literally get yelled at and beer grabbed. Big Star Bar is a wonderful change. The bartenders are friendly, consistent, and I don't recall ever being yelled at because it's almost closing time. This looks to be the new bar for us, which may be a shame for Cecil's as we can bring 10-15 people every night who like to drink and tip. For shame, Cici! Love you Star! read more

Went during the hottest time of day and walked in hoping to find air conditioning after a day of antinques shopping, however, no AC filled the fun-bar (although my husband didn't mind). Awesome $2.00 Lone Star Lite beer and a juke box. Sat and played some cards while watching the Dodgers score a winning, homerun. The waitress was a total sweetie-hottie. This place was awesome. So laid back. Arian kicked butt as a bartender! The drinks were cheap, cold, and flowing. The jukebox has a great mix of music! Everything from classic country, classic rock, to jazz, and a variety of other music. The fire pit outside was awesome, it definitely made for a really socially friendly environment. They don't serve food, but will be happy to provide you with a variety of menus that deliver there (get Pinks!). All in all, this is a great bar, with a great staff, with great patrons. read more

I love this bar. Pleasant bouncers at the door. Friendly bartenders. Dank, dark, no rif-raf hole in the wall bar. You can sit outside and have a conversation with your friends whole drinking and not have to yell to hear each other. Inside is intimate. Good vibes, fun times. Typical dive bar in a neighborhood that attracts all sorts of people. It was enjoyable to people watch. The dudes in attendance were pretty hot, which is a bonus. I like how spread out it is, and the decor is retro-cute. I only snagged a can of beer and a shot of SoCo, so I can't comment on the mixing of drinks. The staff seemed really pleasant. I went to Big Star Bar for the first time last night. The place is actually really big once you get in there, and it's a really neat dive bar. The drinks are cheap (waay cheaper than Cedar Creek next door) and the bartenders are absolutely awesome, very attentive, really nice. I could see going in there alone and having a grand time sitting at the bar talking to them. We didn't sit outside, which seems to be more popular, but we really enjoyed the inside. It's a really good place to bring a big group of people, it's easy to talk and there's plenty of room. There was a food truck outside serving steaks that were really good, but I believe they are there only on Thursdays. They also have ribs on Mondays which I will hopefully be going to soon. I can't wait to come back and bring a big group! read more

Main thing i like about BSB is that it's pet friendly. I like going there with my dog Oscar and everyone there seems to be cool with a dog or a couple of dogs at times running around the place. As most, I didn't have high expectations of this bar due to how it looks from the outside and even the inside. Regardless, we decided to try it out and don't regret it! Very laid back environment to be in, makes you feel as though you've been there plenty times before. Didn't give the full 5 stars because if you don't know what you want to drink, you're pretty much left wondering what they've got or what they offer. (Ex: my bf asked what beers they had, bartender pointed at the beer cans/bottles they have as reference, my bf decided to ask if they have Yellow Rose, low and behold they did - tucked under the bar. Just moved back to Houston this summer, living in the Heights (grew up in Rice Village), and have been exploring the neighborhood searching for the good spots. Decided to check this place out to avoid the parking struggle and crowds around the corner at Cedar Creek. Was impressed from the beginning. Dive bars are definitely my preference, but for whatever reason, they often come with an air of hipster pretension. This place was the complete opposite; from the moment we walked through the door, the bartenders were extremely friendly and engaging, whether recommending good beers or telling us about upcoming events. The crowd matched the ambiance, both exactly what I was looking for; unassuming, fun, and casual. Luckily, the weather was nice- after reading the past reviews, I can't speak to the lack of A/C issue, but it would definitely sway my decision in the summer heat. But until then, I plan on frequenting this place often!! read more

A dive bar the way that they were meant to be. Great atmosphere, cheap beer, and an outstanding back patio area. A Juke box and a number of different arcade games scattered around give this place just the right kind of feel. If I have the chance to visit Houston again (visiting from Los Angeles) this dive joint will definitely be on my list. read more

Ok, I have been meaning to write this for some time. My fiancé and I love this bar. I never write reviews but we both feel strongly about this. We have no complaints about the prices (who could?!), the random decoration "dive bar" feel, it's a very cool spot BUT, we want to point out one of the bartenders. We usually come in Friday nights. I don't know his name, but he has red hair. To put it mildly, he is a jerk. Every time we come in we make a point to go to the girl that works with him, she is GREAT! That guy is always in a bad mood, doesn't interact with customers, has a grade A attitude, the list goes on. I don't know the girls name but she always wears her hair up and is so nice! I think it starts with a G or J? She jokes around with everyone and makes you feel at home. She looks like she is genuinely having a good time at work. We sat at the end of the bar and played the game machine one night. We both remarked how she seems to be pulling the "mood load" for the both of them. I have never written a review but this is our favorite bar and we just don't understand how, being such a great place, they could let that guy work there? He has been extremely rude to both of us on a few occasions and something needs to be done. I'm putting one star because I want this to be seen but just know I think it's a 5 star place. read more

I love this place! Went here for the first time the night before thanksgiving when they first opened. Yes the fire pit is awesome and so is their beer selection.
