The campground is…read morenice enough and in a great location, but when we showed up at 9 pm our name was posted on a white board telling us where to go. Our assigned cabin was not made up. No sheets blankets or pillows on the bed, musty/dank smell, refrigerator was on the patio for some strange reason, there was a space heater left running in the kitchen sink, random box of dishes in the corner, and we had zero clue what to do. There was nobody to help us, reception was spotty so we couldn't make a call, and ultimately we left. Clearly this cabin should not have been rented. We drove 45 minutes to a hotel and had to pay $600/night because there were no other options nearby. Worst of all, after emailing the manager about what happened and nicely requesting a refund, we got no response. No apology, no acknowledgment, no refund, nothing. We had to contact the credit card company to reverse the charge. Not good. Not well run. Stay away.

My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary and this home was perfect,. Gorgeous, secluded, with an herb and orchard garden, deers, birds, eagles... And a wonderful patio setting to take it all in. We planned to leave the property and hike (which we love to do) and there is a trail head at the bottom of the driveway, but we enjoyed the setting and house so much we just opened bottles of wine and drank in the beauty of the place. There is a great record collection with a turntable that had us pulling out old albums and remembering when we last heard them - as well as played one a turntable. That was fun. We are definitely coming back!! Like any Big Sur property , as the area is remote, bring provisions - we love to cook and hike so we brought food/wine and gear for both. This home is a great launching pad for hiking, the beach, etc...and has all the ammenties. So enjoy it. We planned to trek but were so happy at the home we just stayed there but next time, we may just venture down to that trailhead... :)

Celebrating a big birthday and what to give someone that really wants nothing, but absolutely…read moreadores ocean views? A vacation at the Big Sur Stone House! What a WONDERFUL time we had. Ana met us at the house, provided us with a nice bottle of wine and gave us a thorough tour and told us to make sure we, "made ourselves at home". Mark's extensive album collection (that would be LP's to us old folks!) was absolutely amazing. That's what my partner keyed in on and for the next 3 days played so many albums and was just in 7th heaven!! Then there are the views!! Seating everywhere, ocean views from everywhere on the property and sitting in a chair with a fine glass of Cabernet, watching the sun set over the glistening waters of the Pacific Ocean, listing to vintage Beatles...well, there just isn't anything better! I also arranged for massages to be given out on one of the landings on the property, and listening to the waves crash against the rocks, the birds tweeting about how much THEY loved the area and just relaxing, as the world passed us by! Ahhhhhh. And if that weren't enough, each morning and evening, we ran ourselves a steamy bath in the OUTDOOR soaking tub and sat there (again) watching the ocean and (in the evening only mind you), nursing that lovely glass of Cabernet as the sun set beneath the ridge line. Again, did I mention, ahhhhhhhh. Thank you Ana and Mark for such a lovely time and money well spent at your home away from home.....the Big Sur Stone House. We will see you again!

This is a private campground so reservations can only be made by calling or going online. We love this campground and we've been here many times, and will likely continue to come until we can't go camping at all. If you plan on visiting the Big Sur area, or Carmel, or Monterey, and you love to camp, this is a camp ground that is well worth you seeking out. The staff here is stellar, the bathrooms are always clean, and the camp store has everything you could possibly ever want for camping.

I struggle with these decisions because I'd like to keep it to myself but that's far too selfish. Located at Treebones Resort which is in the middle of nowhere and offers the coolest lodging experiences right on the beautiful Pacific Ocean. The lodge offers breakfast (for hotel guests only) but if you aren't staying here you may enjoy lunch or dinner. The menu is seasonal which means it's constantly changing which I love. Many ingredients come right from their garden! (If you stay here you are welcome to explore it) I've been here 4 times now and I simply cannot get enough. They offer indoor & outdoor seating. The menu isn't extravagant but does offer something for everyone and I've never had anything I didn't fall in love with. Near the lower end of the Salinas Valley lies the small town of Greenfield. It's a terribly windy…read morespot and unless you work in agriculture/farming there's not much here to inspire a visit. Should you find yourself in need of motel here, there's not much competition. I eventually found Motel Budget Inn, a one story, rambling old-school style motel. But after talking with Keyur at the front desk I was convinced to stay here (also there's not a lot of competition). He was warm and inviting and explained to me that most of their business came from weekly rentals, this makes sense as the Salinas Valley employs a lot of temporary labour. He told me that the owners had created two special nightly rooms on the opposite side of the parking lot and all the other rooms. I checked one of the nightly rooms and it was wonderful. A large room with a solid hardwood floor and lots of extras (mini fridge, microwave, etc). the bed was comfy with some sort of memory foam overlay on it and the water pressure was just fine. The whole place was spotless. My only complaint is the soundproofing. The two nightly rooms are side by side and the wall that separates them is paper thin. I could hear the actual conversations of the people next door as well as the TV. Luckily my neighbours weren't too loud/up too late and I was quite tired so it didn't take long for me to be dreaming of giant heads of lettuce (apparently that's what you dream of in the Salinas Valley). I can't recommend the town of Greenfield, but if you do have to stop for the night, you won't do much better on a budget than Motel Budget Inn. Keyur helped me make the best of an unexpected stop and for that I say, Thank you.

We love to visit the Hacienda on Fort Hunter Liggett. It's like taking a trip back in time to a…read morehidden oasis. The building was originally the office building for the Hearst Ranch, but nowadays it's an inn for visitors on their way to north or or south. You have to call ahead to make a reservation. Notice that reservations can be canceled if they are having a big event on Fort Hunter Liggett. You book online and then when you arrive, if you're there before 4:30 o'clock, you can get a code that lets you access a key on a lockbox on the door. Be aware that if you arrive after 4:30 you have to call a number and get the code over the phone. The lockbox on the door is a bit tricky and it took us a couple of tries to unlock it. We were glad we booked ahead because they had given us a downstairs tower room and we wanted an upstairs tower room and we were able to transfer. It also takes forethought to get on the base at Hunter-Liggett. You need to have either a real ID or a passport to enter the base nowadays. They no longer require that you show registration or proof of insurance for your car. The rooms have been redecorated in the past five years, and the look and quality of the furniture are much more suited to a lodge that you would stop at in the middle of a long trip. There's a big sturdy double bed and a bureau with a little barn door where they hid the extra blankets. There are two lounge chairs, and a working TV, although it has very limited channels. There are no movie channels and they're only 10 commercial channels out of about 100 that Comcast offers. There's also a small refrigerator with a freezer and a microwave. The coffee maker, however, is the smallest I have ever seen, smaller than even a Keurig and they don't provide cups to use. There were only plastic cups for the coffee and even paper cups with tops would've been preferable. There is a very small amount of coffee and sugar available, but there's no creamer of any kind. The room was big and quiet and even though there was a huge thunderstorm outside with lightning and snow on top of the Santa Cruz mountains, we managed to turn the small portable heater on and keep the room cozy. We were watching the Olympics, so it was kind of icy on TV, but wrapping up in the extra blankets provided a warm and comfortable place to sit out the storm. There is no food available at the Hacienda anymore. There used to be a breakfast with pastries and yogurt and coffee, but that is no longer available from the kitchen. We were also told that we should not access the Mess hall, so we settled for Liggett Lanes, the local bowling alley, which is the only thing open and available to civilians. They were very friendly there and I wrote them up under a different review. We were able to get wonderful taco Tuesday tacos and enjoyed them over at Liggett Lanes. They will also take online orders, which can be picked up there. We had brought a lot of food with us. My husband brought an entire cooked breakfast of sausage and eggs that he was able to warm up in the microwave in the morning. I enjoyed the little BelVita crackers they provided along with my yogurt and berries that I brought from home. We had also brought a small portable coffee maker and creamer which fit in the fridge, so we had nice coffee accompany our breakfast. We're now regarding the inn as kind of a camping site where you should bring all your own food pre-cooked because there aren't any cooking implements available. You could also buy food from a restaurant in King city to the North or south in Paso Robles before you drive up. Check out time is 11am. We had a great nights sleep because the walls are so thick in that building. The room was nice and cozy, so we were able to pop up and explore the base and surrounding countryside.

The camp itself sits on the other side of the mountains from Big Sur in the Jolon wine region near Lake San Antonio. There isn't much around in that area but that's a good thing, especially on a dark sky night where you can see the Milky Way big and bright. Hot showers, firewood on site, and playgrounds and zip lines to keep e kids entertained. I would say the Dove Creek tent camping side is the more picturesque side, but the Rv side isn't bad either. Just be aware sure 3 is near the bee boxes and we were swarmed while trying to eat. We moved to the other side and were quite happy.
