This museum was worth the stop while we were in the area. You'll find all kinds of quirky and interesting stuff in here, including vintage board games, stuffed animals, toys, empty beer bottles, books, and other miscellaneous items all related to Sasquatch, the Abominable Snowman, Alf, or characters resembling or connected to Bigfoot. One of the two small rooms is full of photos, videos, letters, and articles of the reports throughout the years related to Bigfoot, attempts to prove the existence of this mysterious creature. There's even a map of Bigfoot sightings on site, apparently the most recent sighting occurring just a few months ago. The owner, Michael Rugg, was happy to tell visitors stories about his experiences, and to share information about the hunt for Bigfoot. He's probably come across plenty of visitors over the years, both skeptics and believers, and he was very eager to answer any questions while we were there. There is very limited parking out front and nearby, but this place doesn't seem to get busy, so it shouldn't be a problem. Head 1-hour north to Santa Cruz for a walk on the wilder side. Yes, I'm talking about the official Bigfoot Discovery Museum. This remote spot feels just about where you might expect to find the furry creature. Keep expectations in check -- the place is pretty small, but is chock full of bigfoot artifacts including footprint casts, local sighting map, Bigfoot videos, skulls and other bigfoot related pop culture items. We spent about 20 minutes here. Though, I guess if you're really into it and want to read all the information, you can spend longer. The Bigfoot Discovery Museum is a roadside attraction that you can easily tack on to any trip up in the Santa Cruz Mountains. In fact it's right across the street from Henry Cowell State Park. Admission is free but the suggestion is a $2 donation per person. Inside is a ton of memorabilia, maps of sightings and articles on, well you guessed it, Bigfoot of course! It's kitchsy yet wonderful all at the same time. Whether or not you believe it's just a fun place to stop. Make sure you take some time to speak to the owner-he'll be more than happy to talk about local sightings and experiences of people he knows. You can spend 20 minutes tops here and then head out to your other adventures for the day. Some souvenirs available such as $2.50 stickers and $18 t-shirts. I'm not one to believe that bigfoot actually exists so going to this museum and hearing that many people believe it to be true, shocked me. There is a video in the museum of a female bigfoot walking that is also lactating. She turns around briefly so you get to see her face. We also saw a map hanging with pins for all the locations that people saw a bigfoot. When I asked why we haven't seen any, I received an answer that when a hunter thinks he is hunting a bear and kills a bigfoot instead, the hunter gets scared because he fears he will be trialed for murder so he buries the bigfoot. The skeleton of the bigfoot is found years later. The museum is small but it is free. If you stop by make sure to talk to the individual behind the counter. Seriously, talking to him made the experience so much more rewarding. read more

I have had interest to know more about bigfoot and thought about visiting the place on the way to Henry Cowell state park. It is a small place right in the roadside and parking is to be adjusted in the road. It was smaller than I expected and literally there was very little space inside. The curator seems to know a lot about bigfoots and there is everything (right from the comics to videos of bigfoots) that show its existance. He was explaining to some other guests and so we just took one look at everything and got out. read more

The gentlemen that runs the place was very interesting to chat with and had some great insights. Read some of the other Yelp reviews and you'll see that this is an issue. This was one of our primary destinations today on a little jaunt over 17 to Santa Cruz and environs. We arrived around 11:30, and the place was closed. The posted hours clearly said open at 11. Two other families showed up and were similarly disappointed. We rang the bell at the front, which you're supposed to ring if the door is locked, but no one came to open the museum. I called about an hour later and only got the answering machine. We were going to give up on this place altogether, but then I decided to give it one last try before we headed home. To my surprise and delight, someone answered and confirmed that it was open. We retraced our steps and paid this place a visit. It is small and musty, but in a way exactly what we expected. There is Bigfoot-related kitsch to please anyone, plus some quasi-scientific stuff as well. The diorama was not lit at all so it was hard to appreciate, but there were lots of carvings around the place that made for fun photo opportunities. There's no charge to visit the museum, but donations of $2 per person are suggested. Since we love supporting these quirky bastions of Americana, we gladly contributed to its upkeep. So yes, this place is worth a visit. But call ahead to make sure they're open. read more

He's an older gentleman who is struggling financially and just wants to share his assortment of Bigfoot artifacts and infographics with the world. This place was quite interesting. It's small, and might take up 15 minutes at the most to see everything here. I was lucky enough to speak with Mike. He was very knowledgeable, and informed me of sasquatch sightings closer to my home in the L.A area!! I overheard Mike casually mentioned that the sasquacth in a video being played was a female. I asked him how he knew. Obviously, it's because she has boobies! I felt like an idiot lol. Glad I came in and left a bit more educated on my Sasquai. Worth checking out if you're in the area. The research wing was overflowing with information and first person accounts of Bigfoot encounters internationally, nationally and locally. Peppered throughout the museum was vintage and one-of-a-kind merchandise. Additionally, the walls are lined with Hollywood celebrities that have partaken in the tour. The coup de grace can be found in the outdoor garden; a life-size diorama of Bigfoot in his natural habitat! There are some rumors of a museum expansion in the works including a deli and a bed-n-breakfast. This place is not very well advertised but it's FANtastic! Their location is great and they are even close to a restaurant (which we even tried out afterwards...check my other review). Outside their museum, they have many beautiful wooden carvings of Big Foot. It's FREE to come in but they do ask for a donation. Once inside they have many interesting information and a huge collection of items about Big Foot. Every corner you look at you can tell the love and passion the owner has for Big Foot. Our boy really loved this place and stayed there for awhile just reading and looking at the items. Note: This is not a large museum but a collection of fascinating and intriguing information about Big Foot. Big foot museum gives me life itself. I've never seen something so real. I am flabbergasted. Before coming here I believed Bigfoot to be nothing more than a fairytale or folklore. After spending 2 hours in this museum I understand now how someone can be so fascinated by such a large foot. Please visit this well executed display of the beauty of big foot. Located less than 1/4-mile south of the main entrance to Henry Cowell State Park, the Bigfoot Discovery Museum (BDM) is a curiosity in an area that's known for being a bit off. Founded in June '06 by Michael Rugg and Paula Yarr, the BDM is the only museum of its kind in the world dedicated to "educating the public about the probability of Bigfoot and the current thoughts as to its habits and its place in the natural world." While I'm not necessarily a "believer" of Bigfoot, I do like odd things very much--and this is as odd as it gets. Here's the details: Parking- There's a small four car lot out front, and some additional dirt to park in along Highway 9. Admission- The admission is free, but that have a $1-2 suggested donation--all donations over $25 make you an official member of the Bigfoot Discovery Project. They also have a Paypal site if you want to donate that way, as well. Exhibits- The BDM is a tiny place (maybe 25'x25'?) but is jam packed with Bigfoot paraphernalia; from toys, books and newspaper/tabloid articles to actual casts of Bigfoot footprints. You could probably be there all day if you really went over everything. They also have the Patterson/Gimlin film footage (you know the one) playing on a constant loop on an old school iMac. All that is fine and dandy, but the real gem of the BDM is the gentleman who's running the place. With long, scraggly hair; a beard that made me feel like a girl; piercing grey eyes and a voice he casts with such timber that it resonates in your very soul. He is an intense, and a "scary" looking man for sure, but once you start talking with him you'll see that he's actually a really swell guy. He is more than happy to regale you with his own personal anecdotes, and discuss anything else Bigfoot related. I would've liked to spoken with him more, but the boy was getting restless. The BDM is a nice escape from the dreary "normalcy" of the everyday humdrum. I wouldn't recommend you coming here unless you have an open mind, and are not a Señor PoopyPants. I'm not sure that it's worth the trip *just* to see the BDM, but if you're at Henry Cowell and want a quick, fun adventure you can tell your friends about, then it would be a terrific addition to your day. read more

Hermon Rd, Lt on Hwy 9, pass Henry Cowell SP. Cross street: San Lorenzo Ave. FREE Admission, suggested donation $1-2. It's a tiny museum and smells kinda funky. Lots of old books, old movies, things to read on the walls, a film was playing when we went and the guy was busy talking to others in the museum/shop. Went there on a Saturday with my wife and seven year old son who is OBSESSED with Bigfoot. To begin with, it's exceptionally small. You can tell it's a privately owned little domicile, all seemingly put together by one guy. It was fun getting to listen to him talk. We had walked in on a larger group standing in the second room in the middle of a long speech by the owner. As a science teacher, I'm afraid that modern science disagrees with a few of his facts, but it was still fun to listen to. My seven year old doesn't know the difference and is a huge believer, and I love fostering that. It's a very, very short visit for a museum - maybe half an hour at the absolute most. It's worth a small donation and a couple postcards to visit though! read more

What would the Santa Cruz mountains be without The Mystery Spot and the Bigfoot Museum! This modest little museum will make a believer out of you. Even if not, you can still leave with a Bigfoot Museum bumper sticker or shot glass. I did. There's shelves filled with a huge collection of various Bigfoot magazines, articles, figurines, photos and the like. Even some of that creepy Bigfoot that Steve Austin fought in that Six Million Dollar Man episode. Remember him? Terrifying. Anyway, the gentleman who runs the Museum is nice enough. If you chat him up, he'll show you the big Northern Cal map on the wall full of pushpins where different sightings have occurred. He'll even tell you of his own Bigfoot encounter that happened when he was a boy. There are Bigfoot footprint plaster casts, and outside, there are two GIANT life sized Bigfoot replicas. Awesome. The two guys behind the counter were patient with questions and told lots of stories about why they believe Bigfoot exists and tromps around in these woods. It's a very tiny place crammed full of Bigfoot paraphernalia and show Patterson's old 1960s video on loop, apparently with the understanding that digital technology has allowed scientists to zoom in on details and determine that this is not a guy in a furry suit, but that the muscles ripple and the gait is one that could only be of a creature not yet really discovered. Lots of other stories abound here as well. Worth a stop for sure. read more

The owner Mike saw one as a child while camping with parents by a stream, he's been in the industry his entire life. While I was there another visitor came to the museum & shared the story about his brief encounter with a Sasquatch. They mean no harm & don't want to be bothered by humans & hunters who have been known to shoot once in a while out of fear. BELIEVE!!! This is a small, labor of love museum. The owner and caretaker Mike is not really making any money on this place so be nice. No, it is not a fancy and snazzy museum; it is a backwater little hole in the wall dedicated to BigFoot, exclusively, and has various posters, artifacts, pictures, movies, toys, and collectibles for sale. It is dusty, smelly, and needs a top-to-bottom makeover which will happen if I ever win the Lotto in the form of a donation, but for now it works, and is fun, interesting, quirky, and a 15 minute stop for anyone traveling up CA Highway-9 deep in the Santa Cruz Mountains. There are about six parking spots out front and that is usually all you need as you would be hard pressed to find anyone else there at a particular time. We arrived to find a family from the U.K. hearing all about interesting BigFoot facts from the owner Mike. After they were done Mike answered some of our questions and sold us some posters and off we went, more knowledgeable of this interesting piece U.S. folklore. What a ridiculously cool and unexpected find! I was staying at Jaye's to see a show at Don Quixote's and when I was looking something up on my iPhone map, I saw the marker "Bigfoot Discovery Museum". SAY WHAAAAT? Oh, hell yes! I nearly squealed with excitement. I had no idea. I loaded the kids in the car and we heading out to see it. What a neat place! The first room has tons of Bigfoot memorabilia from various TV shows, movies, magazines, and newspapers, included a display of Bigfoot articles from my beloved and now defunct Weekly World News. There was also music overhead that was Bigfoot related. Most likely from the 70's. The next room had more exhibits and the wonderful and interesting Mike behind the counter. We spoke at great length about the museum and how it is in jeopardy of closing due to lack of funding. So PLEASE make a donation when you visit and buy as much stuff as you can. This place is a gem! A quirky original that needs to remain open. I was looking at some of the art work and found a sketching of Bigfoot playing the dulcimer. I asked Mike, "Is that Bigfoot playing a dulcimer?" and he told me they were his two favorite things. Awesome. He also told me about the five types of Bigfoot (Bigfeet?) which was fascinating. He said he's been studying Bigfoot for over 60 years! HE BELIEVES! Days after we went, there was a piece about the museum on the news. Great timing! If you live in the Bay Area, this is definitely a neat little place to visit. The drive is beautiful and Henry Cowell Park is RIGHT there. Now how are you going to give a museum dedicated to Bigfoot anything less than 5 stars? It's small but just the prominently displayed tabloids with a claim like "Bigfoot Hooker" with pictures are worth coming here for. The Bigfoot diorama outside must be a sight to see when you come upon it at night and the reflectors hit you. They show Bigfoot movies outside on Friday night, and although I can't come up with anything other than "Harry and the Hendersons" I am curious. Best of all - this shop is run by a true believer and hearing him discuss the history of the findings is worth the trip. Other than that - it's free and the drive to get here is gorgeous. read more
