Zero stars. Atrocious, IMHO. My painting was called a quintessential masterpiece of the artist and genre. It was my mistake to trust this company. They sold my painting for $345. and that left me with $265. I had made myself clear about the sales expectations. They had no right to depreciate my property, and I wonder what the eventual end of the line was for the painting. On the other, hand if it was an honest sale; I could not imagine anyone being so negligent with another's property, in my opinion. When I asked about the negligence, they said they thought I told them to sell it for $345. To the contrary, I made no such direction as my conversations and emails would attest. My wife and I bought this picture in 1956 when we got married. read more

As mentioned in other reviews, if you're in Delray and can inspect their items in person and retrieve them after the sale (shipping is not "lightning-fast"), then Bill Hood might be a good source for your collection or inventory. However, if you're depending on either their photos or someone from the gallery to act as your eyes and hands, and give you an accurate description of an item and its condition, you are bound to be disappointed. read more

My feelings about the Hood family and auction go far beyond buying and selling. I have been a fan of the Hood family itself as a family who happen to operate an auction company started by Mr. Bill Hood. Everyone in the Hood family is a part of the auction house and is a special part of the company. I really like that. Chris and Alex have always been easy to work with and listen to my silly concerns It always turns out OK. If anyone reads this, my words are sincere. There are other auction houses, but I only will do business with Bill Hood and Sons. That is not a fair name because it excludes Mrs. Hood [don't mess with Mrs. Hood] and the Hood Sisters and others. In all my years of buying these people are absolutely the WORST I've ever experienced. During the course of a LIVE auction they actually blocked multiple attempts of live bidding on several objects and pulled at least one object AS IT WAS BEING BID ON!! They made that admission themselves in the one call I got through too them later (see below). Multiple emails asking for help after the fact --gone ignored. On those same items, after the auction ended and the item was offered for direct sale --multiple emails making an offer for the object gone completely ignored. Telephone calls blown off or left forever on hold and the one time I actually did get through to speak to some clearly annoyed cranky old lady.... I'm given some song and dance 'swiss cheese explanation' even a 12 year old could see through. THE WORST! read more

Poorly run 2nd and 3rd generation family business. After coming out, taking pictures and wasting my time, they would t return phone calls and made me miss their next auction. Surely the old man that started this business would be mortified to have his business driven into the ground by kids, spouses and grandkids. Do yourself a favor and spare yourself the headache of dealing with these clowns. read more

It's a mixed bag. They have been in business forever and are trusted by locals and you can see some very high quality items come through their auctions. They are unprofessional about answering the phone; you might need to call 20 times to get someone and then they act like you have a problem. I have purchased about $20K worth of antique items over the last two years and I would say my best advice is to refrain from bidding unless you can be present to inspect the items in person. They are hit or miss about disclosing damage. I bought a cabinet that was so rickety it couldn't even be moved without falling to pieces and this was not disclosed. One gets the idea they ride on past reputation without putting forth enough effort to convince their newer clients. I have the feeling they don't care all that much what a customer thinks. read more

As a serious collector and connoisseur of antique porcelain, I'm always on the prowl looking at online auctions for something new and rare to add to my collection. I was browsing on AuctionZip and saw some beautiful pieces for sale at Bill Hood and Sons, which I then bid on and won at the live online auction. Everything went fine, until it came time to arrange shipping... While I was aware that I would have to arrange outside shipping myself, I had no clue that this auction house does not pack the items. Not only is third party packing expensive, it's also quite nerve-wracking to think that someone not normally dealing in antiques is packing fragile and rare items. Bill Hood and Sons had recommended three businesses for shipping, UPS and two local shipping companies. UPS quoted me nearly $120 for shipping four small and light porcelain plates, and the reason the price was so high was due to the cost of UPS packing the items. The second company I contacted gave me a much lower quote, but when I searched the business name online I found negative reviews saying that they did not know how to pack up antiques and items arrived broken, a.k.a. the main danger of items not being packed by people who are used to handling antiques. The third company thankfully had good reviews and a good price estimate, and hopefully they'll do a good job. Long story short, this auction house does not pack anything and the result is very high shipping costs and possible damage to whatever you chose to buy. read more

I would just like to say that every interaction, and every aspect of business I have done with Hood Auction has been top notch. Both from the buying side, as well as the consigning side. I have been doing business with them for 5 plus years. Not only have I purchased great items from them for my business, they were also able to get me top dollar for the unique and specialized items that I had consigned them to sell. I buy from other auction houses in South Florida, and when I show up to pick up my items there is always someone to help me load and pack. Not true with the other places. As far as what I have read on Yelp with the other reviews, it seems like the "issues" that were negative have to do with shipping companies. Hood Auction is not a shipping company. They are a auction house. They only offer the option of shipping ( separate businesses ) as a service to their customers. It upsets me to read something so negative written by another yelp member complaining about something to do with a shipper that they hired. It seems like the negative comments should be left with the shipping company??? read more

They are perpetrating fraud on a grand scale with their shipper by the name of James Giannuzzi. They sell broken porcelain on line and then they hand it over to James Giannuzzi. Here is how it works: James Giannuzzi will tell you that he includes full insurance coverage but in reality he pockets the money and leaves you with no coverage. When the item arrives broken and you complain he assures you that everything is in order and that tells you that he will submit a claim and because he has such an outstanding track record there is nothing to worry about. After approx 2 months the shipping company picks up your broken porcelains and take it back to him after which he declares that there is no insurance coverage but out of the goodness of his heart he will write you a check for you for approx 20% of the original coverage which will bounce anyway. When you complain to Bill Hoodlooms they claim that they are not responsible for shipping nor for the action of James Giannuzzi. Now you have nothing and they think this is OK. Well, I am going to the police to see what they have to say about this and I will start a web site to start collecting information about their practices as I have a strong feeling that I'm the first one who went through this experience.
