I just relocated to the Mayfield Area and needed a new barber. Not a hairstylist or Coiffeur with a…read morebarber pole out front. I had the p,erasure of meeting the owner Tom who has been cutting hair for 61 years! And Joe who seemed genuinely happy to meet a new customer. The shop is Old School and impeccably clean!I received a great haircut at a reasonable price. I keep my hair high and tight, so I will be back into this shop in two weeks!

For me, its the shit you sip from your roots that is the elixir of youth..... Freihofer's donuts, Dunkin Donuts coffee, Wise potato chips and Genesee Cream Ale. The last bit of Gloversville perfection i need is a guy named Dicky shaving my head with a straight razor he sharpens with a leather strap. Barone's is as Italian as you can get without having a garlic scented Ferrari painted green and red with a moustache mounted to the front of it. Dicky got me ready for my Fifth grade graduation (dutch boy) Eighth grade prom and graduation (spike hair, shaved sides) Junior Prom (Long skater wave top, shaved sides) Graduation (Same, but BALD razored sides) Wedding (Shaved head, bald with razor) I was even at Barone's when pinnacle moments in history unfolded in front of my eyes in full news coverage....with Dicky's responses.. Reagan assassination attempt ("Thats a damn shame, huh? Hope hes ok.") Oklahoma City Bombing ("That's a damn shame huh? Hope theyre ok.") Challenger Explosion (Well, i was in school, but...im sure he would have said that, well...maybe not the "Hope theyre ok..") At any rate, id calculate the amount ive spent there, but i dont feel like doing math. I feel like running my fingertips over my freshly shorn scalp. Yeaaahhhh...sweeet.

George blesses me with a flawless haircut and beard trim every time I've had the opportunity to make a reservation with him. I also greatly enjoy the full Regal Treatment, as I'll always "treat yo'self" around my birthday, but I rarely have the time for this level of exceptional service appointment. I HIGHLY recommend making a reservation online, as walk-ins often wait a long time, or they're booked for weeks out, especially around the holidays. The two superstars, George and Sam, run a professional barbershop, with customer service at the top of their priorities, as I'm always offered a beer, whiskey, or espresso while I enjoy my fresh cut. I personally go with an espresso, as I usually get my haircut on the way into work. Ultimately, the masterpiece that is your haircut, beard shaving, or full facial grooming, will be no-sweat for the gentleman than own this first-class barbershop. Yes, their services are expensive, but it's top shelf quality and superior customer service that comes with these prices. See you there!

Patsy's, and the Heart of a City The heart of a city doesn't…read morebeat in time to the rhythm of landmarks whose silhouettes are stamped on postcards. Its pulse doesn't shake the shopping centers or the offices or the multitudes they carry. It honors no arrhythmia before the Capitol or the architecture that has grown around it. Because it's often the case that the biggest machine lives and dies not by its most imposing part, but by the smallest pin in its center. It's easy to miss Patsy's Barber Shop if you're weaving through the traffic of State and Pearl. You have to know to take the right onto Howard Street and go slowly enough not to miss the white neon tubing that brightens the shop and casts just enough of its glow onto the sidewalk to let you see the barbers ply their trade. Patsy's opened in 1930 at the cusp of the Great Depression, when a proper haircut was a man's resume and the newspaper on the empty seat was the employment office. It was a family business, like many that had dotted the downtown and further south to the neighborhoods that would eventually be sacrificed to Nelson Rockefeller's sense of grandeur. William "Tragedy" Yager now presides over the memories absorbed into the mirrors and the padded chairs. Since 2006, he's followed in the footsteps of his great grandfather, a man who likely opened up shop as he always did on the day Japanese planes set off for infamy. And anyone who's had a seat in one of his chairs and a hot towel on their face knows that Tragedy didn't just inherit a trade; he inherited a love and a duty to everyone that crosses the threshold. A large man with a long, thick beard and a tapestry of tattoos lining both temples, he wouldn't strike you as a man you would want to meet in a dark alley. But again, the seat, the hot towel, two minutes in conversation, and you'll realize that he's exactly the man you would want to meet in a dark alley if your car broke down, if you were cold, hungry and scared, if everybody passed you by. Because there are certain things you can expect from those possessed of the instinct of leadership. But what you may not expect is that sometimes, the places where matters are truly decided accept walk-ins. Patsy's Barber Shop has two locations, 3 Howard Street in downtown Albany and Room 126 on the Concourse Level. Call for an appointment and check for hours. And be sure to patronize the many barbers Tragedy has trained personally.
