Dare County Regional Airport is a small airport that serves small aircraft. The widely advertised OBX air tours leave from this airport as well as biplane rides and helicopter rides. In addition to sightseeing tours the airport also serves a charter service that flys to and from places like Raleigh, Dulles, College Park and Norfolk. Many of the take offs and landings are from the banner planes. Private plane rentals are available too so bring your log books and prepare to get checked out by a local pilot if renting a plane is in your plans. In the summer this is a busy airport! The airport is a cute building built in beach fashion. The waiting area consists of large, comfy leather sofas inside and a small deck outside. Beverages and snacks are limited to a few vending machines. Many of the passengers traveling through here seem to be getting on air tours so while there are often people waiting around, no one seems to be waiting around long. Overall, it's a clean and comfortable waiting area with lots of windows for viewing aircraft. I loved watching all of the planes coming and going from this busy airport and I thoroughly enjoyed a scenic tour of the Outer Banks. With so much traffic I was surprised to learn there is no ground control or air traffic control - just a group effort via UNICOM 122.80.

It is one of the most beautiful little airports, across from one of the most gorgeous beaches in the entire US. Miles and miles of white sand and secluded beaches, but watch out for the rip current! The runway is under 3,000ft so you're not going to find any jets that fly here and the only way to get to Ocracoke is by ferry or by small airplane. The best part? If you fly here, you can walk across the street to the beach. It is right there. The approach is supremely beautiful. Pro-tip: try calling Howard's Pub and they may meet you at the airport with a golf cart and gladly shuttle you for lunch. It's about a two mile walk to the town where you can rent bikes, golf carts, etc...and you can try calling a place to get a golf cart for the day as well, as this is the easiest way to get around the island. For the airport itself: night take offs and landings are prohibited, so you can only legally fly in here during the daytime. They do have a GPS instrument approach. There is no fuel here, so plan accordingly. You can taxi to an area with a place where you can tie the plane down. I don't think there are any prohibitions against tying the plane overnight; but be sure to double check. There is a little building accessible with a code -- I didn't go inside, but I imagine it has a computer or two for flight planning purposes. Let me go back to focus on the beauty: if you're a pilot, YOU NEED to come here. It is such a gorgeous beach and approach. Flight time from Ithaca is about 3 hours and 30 minutes or about 4.5/5hours from Buffalo in a slow cruising airplane (110knots) with a 10kt tailwind. During September or late August, it is one of the best beaches to go for a swim.

Victor, the owner, was pleasant and helpful only until I needed to cancel a reservation. I called ahead out of courtesy, personally notified him, and apologized. That's when the professionalism completely disappeared. What followed was a rude and hostile response: "That's fine, don't call us again--you won't be able to use our services in the future. We won't help you," followed by abruptly hanging up. This was a standard cancellation by a paying customer, not a favor. For a business owner, reacting with pettiness and hostility over something so routine is embarrassing and reflects poorly on both leadership and business integrity. If this is how a simple cancellation is handled, it raises serious concerns about how real issues would be addressed. It's 2026--customer experience, professionalism, and reputation matter. With only a handful of reviews, all one star, this interaction unfortunately reinforces the existing pattern rather than improving it. The image being presented does not align with the reality of the customer experience. After that, I'm glad things worked out the way they did. I would hate to support a business whose professionalism is conditional.
