The span between the land spots is approximately two miles by ferry, which to my big surprise was free and took less than an hour. I understand the ferry I was on was one of a fleet of 8 ferries operated by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The scenery and views you'll see are fabulous with the area being loaded with fishermen. It's called the "Blue Marlin Fishing Capital of the World," but even with the Gulf Stream running only 10 to 15 miles out, to me it's questionable. The ferries generally run every half hour "on season" with a capacity of around 40 to 50 vehicles.

The inn keeper was kind and gracious welcoming us with no problem -- even though we didn't have prior reservations. Little did we know, we would get stuck on the island with the ferry ceasing to operate due to high winds. We were there several nights and he provided us with a safe a cozy place to stay during the storm. Highly recommend. Very peaceful and soothing place to stay. Wonderful inn keeper and fantastic history. His homemade breakfasts were also quite delicious.

My room had double beds, a full sized refrigerator, stove & oven with pots, dishes, and utensils, and a small tv connected to DIRECTV. Outside in the courtyard was a porch swing, tables and chairs, bicycles for rent for the guests, a recycle bin that all guests are encouraged to use, and an area for guests to fillet their fish. My only negative comment about the room was the rather small shower stall. Before checking in here or at most any property on Ocracoke Island, make sure you understand all of their policies. Once you have made your reservation, it is considered something that cannot be cancelled. They will send via email all of the details. This was a pleasant, quiet place to stay.

There is a relatively new flight planning room now with Air Conditioning, power outlets, internet, and a computer for flight planning--a nice spot to cool down and take a quick break before heading out. Plan your trip accordingly, the airport is closed at night, and is 41nm from the nearest airport with fuel.

We parked in front of the motel and didn't touch the car again the whole time we were there. The highlight was the service - the motel staff were so welcoming and truly exemplify the southern hospitality that North Carolina is known for. They have laundry service, which was fantastic as we were able to do a load of laundry after being in the ocean for several days. We rented a golf cart, though I wish we would have asked the price before agreeing to rent it. We probably only used it an hour and paid 70.00 so that wasn't worth it for us, but that was clearly our fault for not having a better idea if we would really use it. You can't take the golf carts to the beach, so I suggest to make sure you really will use it before renting them. Breakfast and coffee came with the reservation. Overall great place to stay if you're traveling to Ocracoke Island.
