Binondo is the oldest Chinatown in the world. Although the neighborhood is not that famous among people who visit Manila, the Binondo Food Walk definitely placed it in the touristic route. Forgetting about the food thing, in my opinion the single fact of being the oldest Chinatown justifies the visit. So prepare yourself to the smells, colors and tastes Binondo has to offer.
The access is quite simple. I took the LRT and jumped on Carriedo Station. It's the easiest (and cheapest) way to get there. It's not close from Makati, where I live, but it was worth the effort. I may have taken around 30 minutes to arrive in Binondo.
Walk a little bit and you'll see the Arch of Goodwill. For me, it's Binondo's symbol. Cross it and you'll find yourself at Ongpin Street, a central venue to explore the best of the Chinatown. There you'll find lots of vendors, traditional herb stores, stalls, jewelry shops, souvenirs, restaurants and everything you can imagine related to Chinese culture.
If you are brave enough, you can try the street food there. I was pregnant, so I've decided to postpone this experience. Anyway, I recommend taking a look at Binondo Food Walk tour :)
I suggest dropping by any of the tiny traditional herb stores and explain the ancient Chinese behind the counter what's disturbing you. Those men are holistic therapists! It's unbelievable. Wait a while and they'll come with the right thing for you. Believe it! That's Chinese wisdom.
After walking on the wild side of Binondo, maybe you can rest at Lucky Chinatown Mall nearby.
TIP: Go there during the Chinese New Year celebrations. Binondo gets even more picturesque with all those traditional Dragon dances and music. Just amazing! read more
