This place definitely is run-down, but for the price difference of this vs. Mogo Zoo, I'd say this is worth it. Our first impression was pretty bad.... the place looked tiny, we were the only ones there, several cages/enclosures were empty, they said there was no koala show like advertised (it seems they actually don't have any koalas at all anymore), and the train they advertised hasn't been running in years (I assume due to the overgrown tracks). However, as we went through the place, by impression improved. The wombat was very friendly and walked right over to the side of its enclosure where we were. It was so close that we could actually reach in and pet it!! That made my day. We had a similar experience with the echidnas, as they were cuddled up together near where we were standing and we could have touched them if we wanted to. As with many zoos, there's an area where you can walk in with the kangaroos and pet them. We also enjoyed seeing enclosures with emus, ostriches, alpacas, and deer. All those big animals were on the very far side of the park. At 11:30 there was a snake talk. The staff member Jodie gave a Q&A sort of talk to us and the one other family at the part. She was very friendly and interesting, and then took us over to the wombat and talked to us about it by request. read more

It was hard to decide between 4 and 5 stars for this place because I really, really liked it, but after going to Featherdale in Sydney, I can't honestly say that Birdland is "as good as it gets" (which is what the 5 star rating is). But I am definitely a fan and would definitely recommend people go if near Batemans Bay. The highlights for me were the petting zoo part where you go to walk around and pet kangaroos, watching the koala feeding, and getting to hold a wombat. The wombat was definitely my favorite part of the whole experience. The reason I say it isn't "as good as it gets" is because the trails are a bit unclear and it just looked like it could use some more upkeep, like fresh paint. It looked a little rundown, is all. But the employees were super friendly and super helpful. Definitely a must-see if you're in the neighborhood. read more
