Birmingham Social Media Cafe is a must in my monthly calendar. It's a free (no strings attached) networking event held in either Symphony or Town Hall on the last friday of every month.
Run by the wonderful Karen, I have never felt unwelcome or out of place on any visit. My first trip to BSMC was back in September. Feeling a little nervous, I tweeted them to say I was coming and how much I was looking forward to it. In seconds I got a tweet from Karen saying hi and explaining that she would introduce me to many of the regulars on the day.
Flash forward, I am now one of the regulars and I try to make it part of my experience to welcome and speak to new people who haven't been before. I have met designers, bloggers, events services, business owners and a whole host of interesting people through the events.
Sometimes the event is sponsored (meaning a free drink as well as a great experience), but even when it isn't, a cup of coffee is only £1.60 at Town Hall (which is perfectly fine). It's not the kind of event where people take business cards and don't really get to know eachother; everyone is encouraged to find out more about the people around them and make new contacts (and friends) organically.
Whether you are a homeworker, a Social Media expert or a business owner, I can heartily recommend you give it a go! read more
