After all, I grew up with Southport, I owe it highlights of the hotspots! First of all, I'll give you the good news. Now, the bad news might just be my personal tastes, and it didn't stop me liking the restaurant at all, so don't take too much notice of me. I don't feel comfortable with that amount of authority, stop it! Anyway, the food. Lovely! It's a traditional sort of wine bar located in a basement and you can get everything from fresh nibbly tapas bits to pasta, steak, surf and turf, generous salads and some great platters to share such as seafood, meat, cheese or nachos. All the kind of food I love and very nice too, plus the prices are beautifully reasonable. So what left me cold? It wasn't the lovely service, that was spot on. Nope, I just wasn't crazy keen on the decor. The outside invited me in with promises of higgledy-piggledy stairs, mismatched chairs, vintage furniture, bare brick walls, odd little trinkets, quaint clutter... and I got uber modern sleek finishes, minimalist walls, smooth leather banquettes ... agh, the juxtaposition was too much! I just wanted there to be more character to the place. I did like the odd little chalkboards and the deli counter, they were a lovely touch, but heck, it's a minor bugbear and it shouldn't keep you away from what's a cute little restaurant with some delicious food and great live music.

I have personally attended every year for the last 5 years and have never been anything less that completely satisfied with the welcome, the service and above all else the food. The owners and staff have always gone out of their way to make us welcome with their nothing is too much trouble attitude. I have also had the occasional meal with family and again never a complaint to be made.

It used to be that tapas bars were fairly rare but these days they're everywhere, popping up in many towns close to me (although not in Formby quite yet) and O'Este is Ormskirk's offering. Situated slightly away from the main village area, O'Este offers its diners a fine selection of tapas as well as main meals and a table d'hote menu offering 2 courses for thirteen pounds or 3 courses for seventeen pounds. The tapas menu is quite varied and slightly more unusual and sophisticated than your usual tapas bar, offering sardines, mussels and swordfish alongside the usual favourites like chorizo and patatas bravas, all of which are fairly reasonably priced. The a la carte menu has a modest selection of dishes on it, including hanging beef and pork skewers as well as roast monkfish. This menu is a bit more expensive but all the dishes are well-cooked and delicious. The restaurant itself is bright and comfortable and the waiting on staff are both friendly and attentive at all times, ensuring any visit to O'Este is an enjoyable one.

Firstly there's a Tapas menu and a Turkish influence on the food (Turkish owner I was told) but the head Chef is Portugese? So I imagine some Portugese flavours seep into the mix at some stage. As we enter into the 16th year of the 21st century I presume innovation in foodie collaborations will lead to more places like this. Onto the food.. The tapas menu is nothing short of fantastic. The breads are baked fresh onsite and are delicious. The Filetitos (strips of lamb fillet I think?), Pan seared Scallops with clams and the Gamberoni Pilpil (prawns) are sensational choices from the tapas menu. I for one cannot wait to rattle out a full blown review upon my return when I'll no doubt goorge on the Beef Stroganoff which I hear is divine. So watch this space...
