Bistro CoqLicorne is a tiny place that offers local microbrewery beers, wines and fun cocktails. The restaurant also offers tapas, sandwiches, and grilled dishes featuring local ingredients such as chicken from Saveurs des Monts, dairy from Outaouais Dairy.

When our cousin was visiting from out of town, and we were looking for a restaurant to take him to, we settled on the Bistro CoqLicorne because of the glowing reviews we saw on Yelp. Based on those reviews, we also called ahead to make a reservation. The reservation was actually a really good idea, because that place was popular. CoqLicorne is situated on Laval Street in Hull. The street is lit up beautifully with string lights, and the restaurant is in a sweet, old brick house. It is a small restaurant. The parking situation is hit-or-miss. You can get street parking, or there is a pay-and-display lot right across the street from the restaurant. We ended up paying $5 for the parking. The menu is unique, and all the items have fun names. Do you think I can remember the name of the thing I ordered? No. But it was salmon on a bed of creamy rice, and it was delicious as heck. You can order large or small dishes of most menu items. My husband ordered two small plates: fried duck dumplings, and spare rib. He loved his food. Our cousin ordered a burger with fries and salad, and he was pleased as well. We were four people. Four meals, two beers, a pop, and a lemonade came out to $145 plus tip. I knocked off a star because the service was pretty slow, but I would for sure visit this restaurant again!

The food is amazing and the restaurant is quite popular. You need to make a reservation to be guaranteed a seat because I have seen people turned away at 6. Their food ranges from burgers to tapas. My husband and I chose to do the Tapas route and thought the dishes were unique and tasty. It's one of the better French Onion soups I've had in awhile and their fish beignet is delicious. Prices are cheaper since it's in the Quebec side. If you are in the Ottawa area, I would cross the bridge and head to this Bistro for a good meal.

    St. Ambroise IPA, very nice!

Another great lunch and beer selection (not a lot of drafts, but had a great NEIPA and Belgian). Burger of the day is always good and interesting, nice variety. Very French-centric, but they are always happy to help this non-French Speaker. Will always come back here when in Gatineau!

Amazing little hidden gem. We came for brunch and really enjoyed the food. The salmon was nicely cooked and eggs poached to perfection. We will be back again!

Cute little place for brunch with some unique dishes to choose from. It does get pretty popular on the weekend so it's better to make reservations before coming in. The service is quick and helpful and overall this joint has a nice atmosphere. Definitely a cool brunch spot.

We biked across the river for brunch and stopped at Bistro CoqLicorne. Great ambience and friendly staff. My wife had the omelette which was great and I had the poached eggs. They were very uniquely done and quite tasty. The menu is all French which may be an issue for some but they are very helpful at explaining things.

We are awaiting a delicious meal ^_^

Love this little place :3 I have been twice and each time the server has only ever been epicly nice :D Food is great! Pretty sure it's artisanal bread- the first time I was there the bread was perfectly crisp, the second time a tad hard (still awesome- but hence why the 4/5) I just love how it's downtown hull- and the food is delicious :3

Truly a unique and wonderful restaurant! The staff are friendly, warm, and inviting. Make a reservation as it does get very busy! I had the special which was a pulled boar nacho plate and it was amazingly delicious! My colleague had the chicken special with a wasabi creme drizzle...food was exquisite, simple menu and good options for vegetarians! The dessert-I has the bourbon banana cheesecake...fantastic. Definitely do not miss this darling bistro when in Ottawa. You will not regret it!

The quail with chimichurri over poutine was outstanding. The crème brûle with maple syrup is the best I've ever tasted.

I love their menu - they change from time to time and it's always refreshing to see new dishes to try I loved the meatball dish when I dined at Town prior to the pandemic so I was so glad to that they kept that on their menu at Citizen! Featuring: - Quebec pork country pâté - smooth and delicious, the condiments/sides adds depth and complexity to the dish - Burrata and Peperonata - cheese was super fresh and that pepeonata - I don't like olives normally but Loved it on this! - Humboldt squid calamari - amazing squid - lightly battered and the cucumber salad underneath adds a refreshing tone - town meatballs - just as good as I remembered it the first time, swipe to see how large that meatball is My server also recommend one of the best raspberry beers I've ever had. Every single dish was excecuted to perfection and the flavours are complexed yet balanced, and presentation was impressive. If you're ever in ottawa, def check them out! They also have an online shop in their Town location for pantry items as well as beer, ciders and wine!

TL;DR/The Short Version: Delicious food at popular…read morerestaurant in the Byward Market. The beef cheek was melt-in-your-mouth. The Long Version: I was at Play Food and Wine Bar for a professional event that was sponsored by a pharmaceutical company. We were a group of about 30-40 people and had a section of the restaurant to ourselves. We had a set menu with a choice of mains (beef or vegetarian). We started off with a few hors d'oeuvres served on spoons. Servers were going around with them and I got to try two different types. One was a shrimp on a dollop of wasabi cream and the other was a gnocchi. Both were tasty and prepared us for the delicious meal to come. We all had the mixed salad, which was a spring mix with grapes, candied pecans, and whipped goat cheese, in a cucumber and mint vinaigrette. I loved the different textures and even though the salad came pre-dressed (I always prefer dressing on the side), the dressing wasn't heavy, so I didn't find it too overdressed for my tastes. For my main, I chose the beef cheek (the vegetarian option was gnocchi). The beef cheek was so tender and literally fall-apart. I didn't even need a knife. It was so flavourful too. It came with mushrooms and mashed potatoes. There was an olive and sun-dried tomato sauce on the beef that I found a too potent and overwhelming in flavour, but overall I still enjoyed the main. For dessert we had the chocolate tart. It had salted caramel on it and under the layer of chocolate was a layer of white chocolate fudge. It was very rich and decadent...overly so. I finished it nonetheless, lol. Service was excellent. We had several servers assigned to our group and they were attentive. They kept our water glasses and wine glasses full. Although I enjoyed the Pinot Grigio, I was driving, so had to limit myself to a glass and a half. Play Food and Wine Bar is owned by Stephen Beckta, who is a bit of a local celebrity, lol. His first restaurant is Beckta, which I have been to and while it's more upscale than Play, I actually enjoyed the food at Play more. His other restaurant is Gezellig, which is in my neighborhood (Westboro) and I've been to it a couple of times, and I definitely like Play better. I'm glad I was introduced to Play. The room we were in was lovely. It was long and narrow and had a bar. As with all restaurants in the Byward Market, parking is paid parkade parking or paid street parking only. Review #139 (2025)

I guess itsya popular time to eat! 3 weeks was worth the wait, as the anticipation of what we were about to enjoy grew stronger. Bread to start, with whipped butter. Hot from the oven. Soft, pillows of carb goodness, with a touch of salt. We started with the TOMATOES WITH FIOR DI LATTE AND RICOTTA STUFFED ZUCCHINI BLOSSOMS which was devine. My main was the ROASTED RAINBOW TROUT WITH BOILED POTATOES, PASTIS HOLLANDAISE AND SEA ASPARAGUS and hers was SWEET CORN AGNOLOTTI WITH BUTTER, PECORINO AND JALAPEÑO. Both dishes were faultless. We finished with Eton Mess with meringue, whipped cream and stewed rhubarb for dessert. It looks like a LOT, but the meringue is mostly air, so we tackled it with ease. And, it wasn't as sweet as expected. Americano to cleanse the palate. Fortunately, we found a parking spot right around the corner, so our full bellies didn't have to go too far.
