As soon as we walked through the door my heart started to flutter. The wood paneled restaurant with its large central Zinc bar, gruff but friendly waiters, formica table tops with little napkin dispensers looks like it hasn't budged in 50 years. In a word: adorable! After examining the menu thoroughly I settled on the house specialty of spaghetti bolo and a café russe to wash it all down. An incongruous blend, I know, but hey, in a 24hr Belgian diner anything goes. Needless to say the bolo was like nothing I've ever had. Served over slightly overcooked vermicelli and topped with grated gruyere, the peppery, chunky bolognaise sauce had a regressive, quirky, heartiness to it that made the whole dish super fun to eat. If I lived in BXL I could see La Clef d'Or becomming a regular post flea market spot.

The wife got something very similar, without the tapenade and instead with olive oil and no sundried tomatoes. We went with the meal deal for 8.5€, which also got us the most amazing meat empanada I've ever tasted. We had lunch there pretty early, I think we were her first customers of the day and therefore the empanadas were still slightly warm. The meal deal also came with a soft or a water of your choice. It's serve yourself buffet style, with dishes that change every half hour. For brunch there was an assortment of five breads, including brioche, nut, sweet egg, and whole wheat, to croissants. Three types of jams, three types of butters, a pumpkin turnip soup, a mandarin orange endive salad, a sausage and onion casserole, a parsley oil tzatziki, tabbouleh, an assortment of cheese and fruit, soft boiled eggs, fresh ham, and for dessert a chocolate fondant with spiced whipped cream on the side. The inside of the restaurant is huge, so you can easily come in with a big group just as you can go there for a dinner-for-two. The roof patio is my favorite part of the restaurant, especially on a sunny day, for even though it's above the street, you get to see a lot of roofs and they have flowers on the white balustrade so you can almost imagine yourself on vacation. The staff is generally correct, though they have a tendency not to smile much (perhaps it's not considered to be the proper form when working at a "fancy" restaurant?). Still, they're always very helpful and definitely know what they're doing. A definite recommend for an outing when you want to take some time out of your day and have a fancy meal.

It used to be a garage (I suppose ?!?) and they turned it now into a lunch place. They used second hand furniture and even the plates are old vintages one. The decoration is really cool. What I like about the place is that it is very easy-going. You can just go and have a coffee with your kids, work a bit, have a bite, etc. The food is also very good. There is only one menu a day, and it changes everyday. You can pick the small or the big menu ( 2 or 3 courses). Everything is organic and fresh - and you taste it. It's an open kitchen so you see them cooking. They have local brussels beer and they know what they're talking about. The restaurant is connected to a second had bookstore "Pele Mele". So it's fits perfectly the concept. Best thing about the place: it's not expensive at all !!! I will go every time I am in Belgium :)
