At around 9:00 we were told that we were being cut off (no more service). So I asked the management: Had we been rude? No. Had we upset other customers? No. Were any of our party of four staggering around and overly intoxicated? No. So why were we cut off? "We have a duty of care - company rules". Ok. Understood. But what duty of care is required for people who are not overly intoxicated? "It's just the rules. Thanks for your custom. See you soon". No you won't, Prince of Wales. After 40-50 years, we won't be back. This is a sad day.

i came here for some dinner with my family, whilst up visiting for the easter break. i'd been here…read morepreviously for a drink, and i think the atmosphere through in the bar area is fine, nice even. it's dark, has lots of nice little booths and yeah, the ambience is generally quite nice. the outdoor area is also pleasant, and would be a lovely on a warm evening (i grew up in aberdeen...i know this happens rarely, if ever!) the restaurant however really didn't work for me. i know this place calls itself a diner...but it's in the basement of an old house in aberdeen and it just...isn't a diner. the red and black decor is old, and it just doesn't work. i ordered the haddock goujons with chips and the food was fine, but for the price of around £16? are you freaking kidding? i could go to the nearest chip shop and pick up some fish and chips of superior quality for a third of that...so even with a restaurant mark up, it is not good value. my mum and sis in law got blackened salmon and it came slopped on the plate in a really unappetising manner. they both said the salmon was good...but it looked disgusting! to be fair, having been to the south, it could be argued that that's the style and manner of presentation favoured over there...but i don't think this would actually be their purpose at dizzys! for what we (my mum, bless her) paid, this was totally not worth it at all, and i wouldn't come back here in a hurry.

And for those of you who don't know your Scottish Cities and their Pubs, allow me to clarify - It's ICONIC!! So, things you need to know, firstly they are rumoured to have the largest Whisky selection in Scotland (RUMOURED). I mean it is ridiculous, I'm sure if a fire started here it would blow up half of Union Street and said explosion could be seen from the Moon. So if you like your Whisky then this is a must visit pub. Secondly, this pub is older than you will ever be, My dad drank here when he was 5, and now he is 80, and people drank there before he was born. It's so old that they had to install ladies toilets a while back as there weren't any - and ladies are allowed to drink alongside men these days! Lastly, it might look like a dump outside, but don't mistake dump for character. This has more character than Monty Python. The floor clearly used to be strewn with sawdust back in the days, and some of the staff have seen more than their fair share of breakfasts - but that all adds to the experience. The experience here is guaranteed to be memorable for all the right reasons!

Let us get down to the essentials. This is about whisky and pilgrims and Scotland and finding places with a lot of bottles of the aforementioned. Well the Grill has it. 500 bottles. Let that number sink in. One dram a day. After spending a year performing that activity and you have not finished. They have some of the oldest drams on sale anywhere in the world - a 1938 Macallan, Several 1930 Malts and the legendary Black Bowmore. Voted in "Bar of the Year" in 2008 by Whisky Magazine and staffed with folks with Whisky expertise. If you do not like Whisky, then grab an ale and soak in the amazing architecture of this place. CAMRA has named this place as the most northerly Scottish "Pub Interior of Outstanding Historic Interest". So much to offer, you cannot lose by visiting this place. Pilgrims Ho!

Few things to consider when…read moreeating here: - You can either order in person at the bar, or download the app and while it's quicker to order, it's iffy on whether or not the app works for you to even order from (the app didn't work for me, so I had to order with my sister-in-law's). - If you do use the app, there are more offerings on there than the paper menu. For instance, haggis is on the app menu, but not the paper menu. - If you want to expedite the visit, order ALL your dishes together and do NOT mark your starters to come early. If you do order the starter to come early, then it will, but they won't start cooking the entree until after the starter has been delivered. The dessert comes after the entree / starter regardless. - Even if you don't have a wait to seat, you will probably wait for your order. From start to finish and ordering a starter, main, and dessert, our visit took nearly 3 hours. I ended up canceling and being refunded the dessert because it took too long. As for the meal, my fish in the fish & chips was overcooked and oily, and that tasted dominated the entire dish. The haloumi was fine, but the crispy batter took away from the flavor of the cheese. But they're never as intimate or home-y, and half the charm of a British pub is that cozy, can't-get-it-anywhere-else sort of vibe. Archibald Simpson's is conveniently location at the end of Union street, and the building itself is pretty nice. There's plenty of room and different kinds of seating depending on your needs/party size. Usually I'd be in there with a group of friends so it was handy to have the big back booths that are bit off the main path so we could be loud and silly and take up space without causing a ruckus. I've had a couple meals there; they were edible and fine, if not memorable. I do have a soft spot for this place, I'll admit, as I happened to be going here with some friends the night my now-husband first asked me to be more than a friend ;) A good pub if you're doing the rounds or need a quick pint with friends before heading somewhere else nearby, but I wouldn't choose it as a destination in and of itself if you just want a one-pub-night.
