New club in the Northern Quarter...meh. New club in the Northern Quarter that is not trying too hard to be alternative and is happy with just being cool...yes please!! I cannot believe this gorgeous new club underneath Afflecks was once the horrendous Too Risque nightclub. Just shows what a lick of paint (and a huge refurbishment) can do to a place. The club is a collaboration brought to us from the people behind Sankeys and the people behind the Northern Quarter Bar and Restaurant...how very random! What I find more random are the secret rooms (not found any yet, apparently you need a password to get in...!!!)! They also have pool tables which are pretty cool and I think should be in more bars! I think it's going to be one of those places EVERYONE heads to over Christmas so try and find out the secret password now to impress your friends! read more

Black Dog was kind of nicer than I expected inside, fresh-looking decor and spacious. We headed here basically because those damn tasty toasties at Hold Fast had piqued our appetites but it was getting late. What a delight then to find that Black Dog not only serves food late but on Tuesdays serves two for one pizza. Two pizzas and a couple of sodas came to £12 WHAAAAAT. I was pleased. They weren't the best pizzas ever and I wouldn't come here for a normal-time evening meal but for late night food, this is great. read more

This should be called 'the late night bar' or 'the place where you go when everywhere else is closed'. Black Dog is a big bar in the Northern Quarter which is open till 4am even on weekdays. I've only actually been in on the weekdays though so far but I hear it's a good place to go and dance on a weekend at 2am. First time I went my friends were playing pool on the pool tables (I just stood and watched as I'm terrible at it!) There was a bit of a weird stale beer/drain smell near our pool table though so we quickly moved. The second time was after the yelp Elite event at Hold Fast. We were starving so went for some pizzas because they serve till 2am- it was 2 for 1 on Tuesday's, which was an absolute bargain. Had a couple of cocktails to wash it down with. Last time was just for drinks on a Wednesday evening- there were a few people in there but not too busy. There's nothing particularly special about this bar in terms of atmosphere and decor or drinks quality, which is why I give it 3 stars. But I can't complain when looking for somewhere to eat/drink late at night in town! read more

Black Dog has now entered the fish finger butty running. It's official. I'm going to have to make one of my patented Yelp lists for this. So far I've accidentally tried the fish finger sandwiches at pretty much every Manchester establishment I've been to thus far that serves them, and I declare, Black Dog's is one of the best amongst. Delicious crispy white bloomer, toasted slightly, crunchy goujons with juicy white fish and a homemade tartare sauce to die for. Add a glob of French's mustard and ketchup to the side of your plate and a generous splash of vinegar to your fries, and you've the makings of an amazing comfort meal. For less than 6 quid too? Who can complain? Also, if you can still catch this place before Yule comes to a close, they're serving the hot winter Rekorderlig. People, this stuff is a hug in a little glass mug. From the people that brought you Northern Quarter restaurant comes this swanky new American pool bar. Swaggering its way into the centre of Manchester next to the bohemian northern quarter, it has gained quickly a very good reputation amongst young professionals in the city myself included. I love going into places that have just opened. It just smells fresh in such places doesn't it. The staff are new, the management is new, everybody gets along the service is great. For a customer it's heaven. The staff haven't had a chance to get miserable in the daily grind of their jobs. What's more customers are generally on their best behavior as well, as it's more than likely it's their first venture into the venue and they are bit shy or whatever. This makes for a rather pleasent environment to have a few with your mates. Now as it is an American themed bar, food menu is a given and they have a bit of a belter of a menu. I like the quirky cool names they've come up with for the dishes, I like it, shows they are slightly innovative and not boring individuals. So what is on there, and what would I recommend? Well there is the "northern quarter pounder burger" from the blackdog burger category. From the blackdog salads section comes the chicken and chorizo sald...mmmm There are blackdog sandwiches, blackdog brunch, blackdog pizzas and blackdog desserts. Just in case you're thinking the sections are your bog standard options, your wrong there is lots of variety on offer here. Ten different types of pizzas, 5 sandwiching options and 8 succulent types of burgers to chomp your way through. This place is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!! Whether you go during the day or night, you will love it. I tend to go during the day and have a game of pool and a spot of brunch or lunch. All hail the new jewel in the Northern Quarter crown. Blackdog Ballroom has just opened under Affleck's Palace and is looking very good indeed. The owners (of Purple Pussycat fame) briefly housed Blink here, a successful temporary bar, before they closed the doors over the summer for the refurbishment. It was a taste of things to come - with Djs like Calvin Harris bringing the crowds. The refurbishment has been tastefully executed in the style of a New York speakeasy, dark wood panels and brick walls serve as a backdrop to mid-century design classics, geometric bar stools, cosy booths and sumptuous soft furnishings. It does still feel a little stark in here though. There are secret rooms, pool tables, and dance area and a lounging area. The drinks aren't exactly the cheapest in town but the bar staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and make a mean cocktail. When I was here the food wasn't being served yet, nor were they charging an entry fee. I don't know whether that would all change soon, I hope they don't get carried away with themselves like other Deansgate bars if it becomes a popular nightspot. read more

Came here for some food and drinks with the girls and as a reliable late night food joint I knew I would have a good time here! I can't believe I haven't reviewed here before! I have been here and the Oxford Road one so many times for drinks, parties and food. Its more of a late night venue for drinks, dancing and pool but at the same time, I've come here with my other half for food in the day and its been great! Food is standard burgers, pizzas, hot dogs and chips kind of affair, but with 2 for 1 mains on pretty much all the time its always a safe bet. Good selection of beers, wines and spirits though not somewhere to come for special beers etc. Will keep coming here, if not to observe the awkward dating and first dates that often seem to come here! read more

2 stars? Really? Yes. The boy has been wanting to come here for ages and we were both quite hyped up to finally be able to go! We arrived and burgers and milkshakes were running through our minds - we went to order at the bar. We were told there would be a 25 minute wait for food which was ok with us but it seemed as though the bar staff member wanted us to go away. We then placed our order for milkshakes but we were told that they couldn't do milkshakes today (everyone in the restaurant literally had a milkshake). The bar staff member then quickly said there was "hardly any ice cream left". We accepted it and got some good old british tea. The tea arrived with tiny cups - no tea bag in mine (and very over brewed) but the boy's had a tea bag in it. No saucer was brought for him to empty it on to, nothing around to use either! The final straw - i went up to get another drink - one of the waiter's is walking past with a milkshake for someone! This is the point i rated 2 stars. I didn't get a proper explanation in the first place and then i found out i was lied to? What busy restaurant on a Saturday doesn't stock up on ingredients they offer in food and drinks on the menu? Why aren't the staff explaining that things aren't available before you order? It just leads to disappointment in my eyes. And don't expect to be given a knapkin or offered knives and forks with your meal. Lovely. I am willing to go back to this place on a less busy day and time but I wasn't very impressed. read more

Updates are a rare thing for me - usually when I write a review (particularly a five star one) it's on the basis that I've visited a business numerous times and have a firm found opinion of the place - this however was not the case with my first visit to Black Dog which impressed me so much that I felt it fit to lavish five stars upon it. Since then I've gone back numerous times and the sheen has worn away slightly with each visit - finally to the point after my visit on Saturday that I feel it necessary to write an update and correct my previous self. Finding other places in the Northern Quarter a little too busy or expensive for a quick bite to eat on Saturday, we chose to visit Black Dog as a safe reliable fall back; somewhere that I'd be happy enough to eat at but where the prices wouldn't make my Mother cringe (not trying to coin a phrase there - my Mum was out for lunch with us). The prospect of sandwiches, burgers, chips and shakes seemed appealing enough to me. Black Dog is starting to smell - that's a shame right? But hey, we can work past that; we arrived shortly after one and the lunchtime crowd hadn't yet arrived (they did shortly after though as the place filled up fast). We noticed that they were working on a new food menu but were happy to see most of the old favourites (cheap pizzas, NY style cheesburgers and milkshakes) still available at the same old reasonable prices. We ordered a few different things; a couple of sandwiches, a pizza and a sharing platter - a little bit of something for everyone and hey, we were hungry! (Note: there were four of us!) We then proceeded to wait for our food. And wait. And wait. Around half an hour later the two sandwiches turned up and were cold - and before you ask, yes they were supposed to be hot - we sent them back and also enquired why the New York (pastrami sandwich) wasn't on it's best bread buddy Rye as advertised in the menu - only then to be told that they didn't have any Rye left (oooh mistake! Let people know before ordering what is and isn't on the menu!). The sandwiches came back out minutes later and from the look and feel of them had just been shoved in the oven/microwave to heat up a minute rather than being remade which I kind of would have expected. A few minutes later we realised... the sharing platter hadn't turned up (by the by the pizza had arrived, was good and devoured in minutes) and when it eventually did guess what... half the stuff on it was cold! Rinse and repeat with sending it back to the kitchen and it being returned to the table looking like it had enjoyed a minute or two at a million watts. Some of the food was perfectly nice (the chicken strips in particular) but with the wait and the sending back fiasco, I was less than pleased. Obviously someone else had complained about either their wait or the food itself as I heard the old line of "sorry, we've moved to a new menu" thrown around more than once - having worked in restaurants for years in my younger days I can honestly say that changing a menu is no real reason for massive delays in food orders, especially when so much of the menu stayed the same and the fact that we (at the point in time that we ordered) were some of the only people in the place eating. There's still plenty here to enjoy; a wide variety of drinks and pool tables until late and all in it's still very reasonably priced - food for four with a few soft drinks came to just over £30, not terrible for a Saturday lunch - but only when the service and quality of the food match the reasonable price will I consider pushing back up the star value. read more

The Black Dog was our stop off point after the dinner at MC as I have been wanting a cocktail evening for a while and the boyf finally gave in. We had been before for wine and pizza which I remember being very delicious, and we even met the black dog, which was a nice touch and made the place feel much more homely than it does otherwise. There were quite a few LADS, as I call them, there last night, but luckily they were stowed away in the back with the pool tables and the bar area was mainly quiet couples. I had a Pokerface (amaretto, strawberries, sugar, lemon) and a Pink Fizz (vokda, apple juice, creme de mure, lemon, sugar). In fact, all of their cocktails appear to end in lemon and sugar; I have a very sweet tooth, but this might not appeal to all. The bar staff were more than helpful, even if there were a few too many of them for a Wednesday night and were milling around for a lot of time we were there. I really like Black Dog and feel sadden that people rate it so lowly - maybe because I have never been on a Saturday night? Or maybe because I enjoy the darkness and the atmosphere directed at a very particular type of crowd. All in all, Black Dog is somewhere I will go time and time again and maybe one day I will experience these negatives. However, until then, it remains as a four star. read more

My word it's taken a long time to finally eat here,so after trawling around the ever more depressing xmas markets for what seemed like ages we decided to give it a go before heading home. First impressions were that it's quite a nice place,dimly lit so I wasn't forced to stare at people in their ever so ironic yule tide knitwear (Always a good thing). The waitress came over to take our drinks order and to tell us that if we wanted food then there would be a 25 minute wait (In reality it was more like 45). I went for a bottle of Peroni and the Black Dog burger with added bacon,Ange went for the burger that comes with everything (Although about 20 mins after ordering she was told that they were out of onion rings!!). Both of our burgers were very nice and very tasty,and the fries were lovely too. Also lovely was the fact that we weren't charged for one of the burgers. If that was on purpose then cheers,if it wasn't then 'Doh!',but thanks anyway : ) I'm giving a 3 and not 4 stars mainly because of the price of the burgers (If we had if been charged for both that is),we both just felt that they could've been a couple of quid cheaper for what you got. They sell food after 10pm on a Tuesday night! This was a very welcome surprise after we'd come out of the Royal Exchange after watching a play and then realised that quarter to ten is not a time that many restaurants want your business. Not a total shock but I'd thought in the Northern Quarter things might run a bit later than average. My brother and I tried a few establishments but it was either a no or one yes which turned into a no after consultating the kitchen staff. We'd decided to just go home and get a takeaway and were headed to the bus past Black Dog when I thought to check their menu ouside - they serve til "late" so we went in and there were still plenty of people eating so we didn't feel like we'd pissed off the kitchen staff by our presence. The food went down well, although sadly they don't have a pudding menu at present. The waitress said she's encouraging them to work on this. They do offers like half price Mondays and pizza Twosdays! Free pool with a meal Wednesdays, etc. I love an offer. I have been here dancing on a Saturday ages ago but I think this will stay a quiet weeknight place for me. read more

Black Dog Ballroom has according to the owner Jobe, been loosely based on the Elbow Rooms in London. This concept being a chilled out bar with good food, good music and pool. This is such a great idea! It is only once you see the pool tables that you think to yourself that there is nowhere in Manchester City Centre where you can play pool in a nice chilled out environment. The pool tables are based on an hourly rate of £5, so don't worry if you're running low on 50p's. The food here is exactly the kind of food you want from a bar. The menu is short and simple. Pizza's, Burgers, and a couple salads aimed at the "girlfriend" market. The chips are the skinny crispy kind and the burgers and fat, juicy and REALLY filling. For around £7, you feel like you've had yourself a real bargain. The Black dog ballroom feels like a real bar, full of real people who are less concerned about being cool and more concerned with having a laugh with their mates, which is a refreshing idea in the uber-cool Northern Quarter. read more

Went for a meal with my dad he likes his spice and ordered the pulled chipotle chicken burger, I wanted something lighter and went for the bourbon chicken nachos - my nachos got delivered to the table plain and I thought hey wait somethings missing so I send them back to await my chicken topping - it arrived black and blew my head off as the chef has basically been lazy and used the pulled chipotle chicken instead of doing the milder chicken topping on the menu, I commented to our waitress and asked if it was usually so hot and she said they do different levels of heat, fair enough if I'd ordered it hot. Despite the stairs down to the bar looking like your walking into the Gap, you cant help but be impressed by how suave and classy the interior to this apparently 'New York speakeasy' style venue is. Now, I've never been to a speakeasy in New York, so I have no idea whether this is reminiscent of one, but its dimly lit, and has a slightly odd mix of comfy sofas and arty concept seats. More to the point it is open 12pm 'til 4am and serves food until 1am,which is pretty good for the Northern Quarter. Nothing on the menu was over a tenner, and the drinks price were the standard £3-4 you pay in this part of town, with a nice looking cocktail menu with all the classics. There's also a dance floor off to one side, however no sign of any club nights in the near future. And for you 'sports' fans, there's an hour of pool for 5 English pounds. This is definitely a good place to drink comfortably into the night! So its nice looking, not over priced. Unfortunately, that's about it! The thing I found with this place is that there is nothing to grab me and say that I should return, which is an issue when there are many similar priced places nearby which do. Its utterly inoffensive and yet utterly forgettable. By no means let this put you off, I cant envisage many people not enjoying the experience here, I just cant imagine many people remembering it either. This place is simply a bar, and that's the best and the worst you can say about it. read more

My first time visiting today, I'm actually bitterly regretting even going. Ordered a spicy bean burger and after a wait of 25 minutes was provided with a chicken burger with cheese. I told the waitress I ordered a veggie burger and she said "oh we don't say veggie burger here, so I thought you said chicken" without even apologising. I don't even think she listened to my order. It finally came after another 15 minutes but it tasted like reconstituted sausage meat and didn't have the mayo on it I asked for. I asked the waitress, waited 5 minutes watching her pottering about and then had to ask her again. They seem to present the food in a gourmet style to get away with the fact that it's actually very sub-standard. I can usually brush off bad service and mediocre food but I feel robbed of my £10!! read more

Number three on Challenge Passport - Black Dog Ballroom. This place was not what I expected. I don;t really know what it was I was expecting, but this wasn't it! It was better (with one exception that I will explain further on). The room is massive for a start. There are super cute booths to sit in or coffee tables and settees if that's more your thing, there are pool tables and room to sit at the bar. It is quite dark but just dark enough to create a nice atmosphere to make you forget the world up the stairs and out of the door, and the staff are friendly. Now the passport offers a NY burger and a milkshake for a fiver. Bargain? Indeed. Now my exception is there is no option for us non meat eaters :( so I slurped a bit of Adam Y's strawberry milkshake and munched a few of his fries. The burger itself was quite small but on the menu it was only £3 so no complaints there at all! A quick note - if you choose to add fries to the Yelp offer you will have to pay £1.99 rather than the £1 it says on the menu. I will be going back when I am a little hungrier to sample the menu and some of the more adventurous cocktails. read more

When Xmas shopping in Manchester sends your tolerance levels to an all time low, you need to retreat into the warm comforting arms of good food and an absence of all things festive. This was the point I had reached on a damp Sunday not too long ago. Having never tried the Black Dog and not wanting to trudge back to the Great Northern, Mr Z and I decided to give it a go. My friend had recently been and said it was worth a visit too. It's not the most inviting of places, quite dark and open and clubby but the booths were generous and comfy and the staff, although a little inattentive, were friendly and welcoming. We ordered beers, and even after being told there was a half hour wait for food, we were happy to sit and chat and chill whilst waiting for our burgers. I had the half pound hound and Mr Z the double cheeseburger with bacon. The food arrived, looking very appetizing and it was good. My burger was juicy and tasted of proper meat, the garnishes were fresh and crunchy and the bun was good quality. My only gripe, and it's a small one, was that I should have asked for it to be cooked medium. It was a shame that you didn't get asked, still it wasn't a real problem, the burger was really tasty. The fries that came with the burger were pretty good too, not the best but nowhere near the worst. All in all it was a good meal, especially when we got a great discount on the food. I'm giving it a 3 star though because at full price, the food isn't really worth it and although I'd happily return there if I was with someone who particularly wanted to go, there are better places to get a burger in Manchester for a better price:taste ratio. read more

I spent a great afternoon in here recently, and also had possibly the best customer service I've had in Manchester. We ordered pizza and eggs benedict, but when the pizza arrived it was more than a little crispy on some edges. It may have actually been the owner who brought us the food, as he noticed the burnt bits and offered us a discount on our bill as compensation. Then after coming back to take a drinks order, he told us that they would be free, which was a really nice touch. Very attentive, nothing too much trouble and the food was delicious too! The last time before this we was rejected as a group of 5 guys for being "too many guys", we did have girls in our group. Three strike is enough for me. Happened upon this little beauty on a Monday, which from now on will be no accident! 50% off all food on a Monday is an absolute steal, especially with the quality of what I ate! I ordered a Bacon Bacon Bacon burger with mixed fries and had a pint to wash it down with. At 50% off, the burger was about a fiver. Was really looking forward to my visit to Blackdog. First impressions were good. The place was reasonably busy for a Tuesday evening. The service was also very friendly and you could get half a carafe of wine for £5. The only problem was how long the food took. Waited well over an hour for 2 pizzas and 2 burgers. As you can imagine we were ravenous by the time the food arrived. To be fair the food was very tasty and reasonably priced and they did give us a free drink whilst we waited. If you're still out a-drinking in the wee hours of the morning you may way find yourself in Black Dog Ballroom. A bipolar bar of sorts, Black Dog straddles townie-pub and Northern Quarter hipster pit and ends up somewhere in the middle. It is either rammed to the rafters and a little over crowded, or dead and empty, depending which side of midnight you find yourself there. The bar itself is well stocked and there are plenty of places to perch while you sip a tasty cocktail or slightly overpriced beer. There is also a sunken level with pool tables which is nice if you just want to hang out. However, if, like most, you find yourself in Black Dog past twelve you will most probably be looking for a dancefloor. I'm always a little disappointed by Black Dog simply because it has the opportunity to pull out all the stops with one of the only late licenses in the Northern Quarter. It could be a serious cocktail bar, a great venue for gigs and club nights or simply a great pool lounge, but instead it makes for awkward drinking and lacks in atmosphere. That said, the music is usually good and the staff are attentive and really friendly. I was really excited when Black Dog first opened but it seems to have lost its shine a little; for a late night bar Black Dog is already looking a little tired. read more

Ended up here on night out round town following the recommendation of a person in our group. On first impression it looked like a pretty nice bar. However, the slightly limited selection of beers on tap were a massive disappointment and I ended up drinking Tuborg as a beer of last resort. Another let down to the place is limited seating opportunities so 8 of us ended up crammed on a table next to a rather uncomfortable looking couple mid-date. Despite these negatives I had a really enjoyable night out here and it seems like it would be a great place to take your significant other. Not really appropriate for a lads night out though. On a side note due to a mix-up with bookings we had to vacate our table. The hostess could not hqvef been more helpful though and sourced us another table instantly, kudos. I didn't get chance to try the food but the menu looked amazing. If my girlfriend plays her cards right a trip back here could well be happening soon. read more

Blackdog Ballroom seems to have everything you could want in a bar. A New York inspired cocktail menu, a secret Ballroom for private parties and a mysterious namesake in the form of Bruce, a 14 week old Patterdale terrier. Vouchers for two free drinks each were very welcome and we battled our way to the bar to sample a 'Jamaican Me Crazy'. The drinks, created by Manchester's 'king of the cocktail' Tom Sneesby take a tour around NYC from Staten Island to Manhattan. The hideaway Ballroom has the feel of "an opulent gentlemen's club" with its Chesterfield style leather seating and purple decor. It's easy to sink into a booth and lose track of time... Boogying away to a mix of tunes including a dash of cool house we notice 'Strictly Ballroom' being projected on the wall. An inspired touch, showing the brilliance and thought that has gone in to making Blackdog a very hip Northern Quarter hangout. To round off, with delicious and affordable pizzas and burgers being served until 1am what more could anyone ask for? read more

Gota say I have been let down, I visited here on saturday after many weeks of promising myself I would. Now I kind of thing I've ruined it for myself, We came in and it was pretty busy but hey its a saturday its to be expected. Sat down table wasn't too clean smelt like vinegar had been spilt all over it. We ordered our food and they told us it would be 25 minute wait, was fair enough for a busy place. I ordered a milkshake but was informed they had just run out of ice cream to make them so I had to stick with tea however as we sat waiting for the food two people across the way were brought milkshakes, and they had come in after us? What gives? When the food finally came it wasn't bad at all, tasty burger decent fries not bad. I was expecting a lot better though specially as I'd loaded the burger with cheddar an chroizo to make it interesting. Maybe I built up my expectations too much for the place but I was throughly let down by this place and won't be making a regular visit of it. read more

After reading great things about the Black Dog Ballroom we were very excited to try it out. We decided to go on a Friday night after work, we'd been for food and a few drinks before hand so didn't get there until later on. We were refused entry because my friend was 'too drunk'. We had been out for some time so we all left, not thinking much of it but obviously slightly irritated. A few weeks past and we thought, 'I know lets try the Black Dog Ballroom again'..... once again the same friend was singled out and refused entry.... we left irritated but determine to enjoy the rest of the evening. Then on Friday (26th April) myself, my fiancée and some other work colleagues were out after work. We had been for food and a few drinks in other places around Northern Quarter. We decided to try the Black Dog Ballroom again, when we arrived we were pleasantly surprised to only find a short queue. After waiting a couple of minutes we were at the front, my friend (mentioned previously) was on his phone texting his g/f and the rest of us were chatting. Out of nowhere the bouncer pointed at my friend on the phone and said "you're not coming in, you've had too much to drink" This was becoming a joke...... We understand that the Black Dog Ballroom has safety requirements and responsibility to everyone and people must be accessed before letting them in, but we were NOT drunk . In fact we felt we had never been 'TOO drunk' on the other occasions. But the fact that this same friend was continually singled out was beyond a joke! The only difference between this friend and everyone else in the group was the colour of his skin. I hope that this was not the reason he was singled out, and if this had been a one off then I would never jump to that conclusion. But the fact remains that he was picked out on more than one occasion. Therefore I am left to conclude that some of the bouncers at Black Dog Ballroom are racist. Obviously we will NOT be trying to get in again. read more
