We were going to head home from Fargo when on a whim we thought we'd detour over to Wyoming to visit "Devil's Tower" In almost the same way we picked Fargo (throwing a dart at a map) we picked the Ace Motel in Belle Fourche just because it sounded like a nice place. The Ace motel was much more than a nice place, it is a quaint oasis in the wild lands of South Dakota. It felt like a Twilight Zone experience (and I mean this is the most positive way) we were suddenly in the courtyard of a 50's type motor inn. Going into the office we were greeted by Vicki the owner/manager/and more and received the warmest of welcomes. She said that she hoped we don't mind an old fashioned 50's feel, and we didn't mind that at all. We were given a key (YES A REAL KEY) on a diamond shaped plastic key chain (come on remember those). Opening our the door, we found our room had that old fashioned feeling but with some modern conveniences. The Ace motel is a great break from the "corporate cookie cutter" rooms you find in the big chains. Do yourself a real favor and if you have the chance to stay here, do it! A piece of advice BOOK YOUR ROOM DIRECTLY THRU THE ACE MOTEL SITE OR PHONE! I tell you this because those web hotel sites that have those TV Ads, they rip-off the small independent hotel/motel owner, the percentage those Big sites take basically take most if not all the profit for the owner. Support your independent businesses and check out the Ace Motel.

I encourage anyone considering snowmobile rental in the Black Hills SD area to avoid "Black Hills…read moresnowmobile rental" at all cost. Myself and 9 family members booked a trip in the summer of 2014 with "Jake" . Before departing for our trip in February 2015 we called "Jake " to make sure there would be enough snow and that the brand new sleds he promised would be ready. Jake assured us that there was a four foot snow base and the sleds were all ready to go. Upon arrival at the rental location we found several old, worn out and poorly maintained snowmobiles. There was also no snow base with the occasional inch or less of packed snow/ice between the rocks and dirt... We expressed our concerns to Jake about the trail conditions and were assured that the trails would get better " just over the hill" . We mentioned to Jake that maybe canceling the rental would be a good idea, but his response was " I have no money but I can give hugs all day".... At this we figured we might as well see what was " over the hill" as Jake was paid months ahead and was keeping the money. We went out to the lot to find the " brand new sleds " Jake had promised us. There where no new sleds, all had been patched together with zippy ties and duct tape. Most where 10 years old or more, 3 were only 5 years old. All had various degrees of damage. Many did not start and all had some sort of issue that took hours to patch together. Mine was the best of the lot with no working reverse, minimal if any braking, zippy tied front plastic, bent control arms and a slipping drive belt. Some of the others needed pull started and two of the ones we did leave the rental shop with broke down in less than 25 miles.. Jake had us park the sleds at a different location than where we rented them, then used our truck to shuttle the drivers of the sleds. The next day when we drove the approximate 30 miles to get the sleds , we were met by a disgruntled man instructing us to get all of these sleds off his property and referred to Jake as "a crook". The third sled to break down lost a control arm and its drive track in less than 90 miles which stranded that rider. Jake is presently trying to extort money from several renters for fraudulent reasons. Jake was very insistent that we all have insurance on the sleds and asked that we park them along side the road with the keys in them. Not sure if this is standard practice but I found it suspicious . At the very kindest I could say Jake, (aka Michael J Rohr), is a fraudulent "businessman" but personally feel he is nothing more than a common criminal. Avoid renting here at all cost.

Anyway, here's a rest area and it's a good one. Straight lines to get in and out, plenty of parking, a clean bathroom and a pretty solid collection of maps and guides for local attractions. It was not staffed when I came by at 6:30 PM on a Saturday. No wifi.

One word describes this place, BAD! Most of the reviews stating how clean the place was are…read moreseveral years old. From the looks of the place, this may have been the last time it was cleaned. Bathrooms and showers were filthy. The sewer connection at our site was surrounded by dried toilet paper, so clearly someone had a spill. Not a major issue, but the gravel is too large so you have some rocks that are quite large, which makes it easy to trip if you're not careful. It looks like they were digging a new septic system opposite our site. WiFi is unusable and either doesn't show up as an option, or is too weak to connect (see photo). Also note that ATVs are very popular at this campground. Be advised if that's not your thing.

Cold overpriced burgers. Went here expecting it to be the same place we've been to several times…read morebefore. This time is was overpriced and not good. The menu has one price and my check had another, that was higher. So you get a basic frozen patty and no fries for $13.50 fries were an additional $7.00, just thought it was going to be the same great burger I've had in the past this is not the same place at all!!!!!

This cabin is pet friendly and has two bedrooms, two baths and a loft with two queen beds. There is…read morea full kitchen, but you may want to bring some of your own supplies...not many pans and utensils! The best part is, of course, the view! Situated at the base of Deer Mountain ski area, there is lots of land with almost no view of the neighbors. The beds are not very comfortable, but you're so tired from hiking the Mickelson Trail you will hardly notice! There is a picnic table and a set of four chairs so you can sit and enjoy a beer or cup of coffee either under a roof or in the sunshine.
