The Thames Head Inn, despite it being listed here on yelp as a "pub" ,is actually a whole lot more…read more Yes, it's a nice pub serving very good food (said the person who ate a breakfast, a lunch, and a dinner here over the course of 2 days) but it's also a place of lodging, a campground, and the closest business to the headstone marking the origin of the Thames River (if you're into checking that off your list). As for the lodging, assuming you're not camping, there's a handful of rooms on the property, outfitted very nicely. They're quiet, pristine, and open directly onto a simple patio space. My sole complaint is that the bathroom featured no overhead shower, just a handheld sprayer, which I imagine was intended for use in the tub as there was also no shower curtain. I scouted out the camper/caravan space sitting about a 10-second walk from the rooms, and it was vey attractive, green, and clean. Restroom and shower for these sites is over near the patio space shared by the rooms. Finally, I am happy to give the pub itself a thumbs up. All of the food I had here was delicious and the space itself is nicely appointed. It's clear that someone puts a great deal of care into the entire enterprise, and I appreciated that. The Thames Head Inn might be the place closest to the source of the Thames River but if you're into that, lucky for you, as there's nothing here that's not to like.

The chips were perfect, and the peas were the perfect compliment. It is clear this is a local gathering spot. Reasons why I liked this place: 1) It had a cheery pub feel to it - the sort of room which you walk into and immediately feel happy about being in. They had the fireplace going, prompting me to upgrade my summary to that most pleasant of rosy-cheeked clichés, "cosy". 2) The Sunday roast is superb: at least the pork and the lamb were moist, flavoursome, and accompanied by some lovely roasties. Seemed foolish to order a beef as well given there were only 2 of us. 3) They do a magnificent pint of St Austell's Tribute. It's probably a very historically interesting building, and certainly not a recently thrown up replica or anything like that. We didn't look for any of that stuff however, because it seemed too nice a place to do anything than have an excellent Sunday afternoon in. Oh, and they've got a lovely front door. Our room was very nice and comfortable, in the old converted stables. Overall, the food was great, the only two disappointments being no fried bread at breakfast, which we were told they had some time ago stopped serving, a small but definite negative, and the burger was just ok, a bit dry and bland. They had excellent cask ales, including a local one. Service was very good but mixed, one person very friendly and helpful, another being a bit cold and curt. It retains some nice old character but has lost some as well. The conservatory-like addition in the back, though nice, does somewhat clash with the old parts and our room was comfortable but a bit bland. Apparently, it is linked to the local and very colourful and controversial Mitford family, who lived in the area. The parents and some of the several sisters were ardent fascists and Nazi sympathisers in WWII, others had different views. Apparently, one owned the place. This is very nice and I would both stay and eat here again based on our experience, but it was not as good as other places we experienced. If it had been just a ltitle better on the points mentioned, I'd probably give it a 5, but as it was, it's closer to a 4.
