Top level coaches of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Muay Thai and Karate. High technical level fighters often train with UFC fighters and world champions and the atmosphere is very friendly to beginners.

    Carlo X.

I've been coming here for over two years mostly for the jiu jitsu. Luiz Panza is the current coach. It's been a great place to train and there's a good family atmosphere along with good competitiveness. It's not uncommon to see some top level international MMA and jiu jitsu players roll through. They also have Wrestling taught by Kenny Johnson, Karate by Chinzo Machida and Muay Thai by Daniel Worin. Look these guys up. Having so much under one roof saves you from having to drive across town to different training centers. If you're the type who doesn't like the white knuckle commute and have work/life balance issues, it's great having this convenience.

    Joseph C.

The people are great and the classes are amazing. It's truly a home felt environment and the vibe a is a lively vibe. The people are highly respectful. I personally recommend coming to train at blackhouse cuz that's where it's happening. Also if ur interested in karate then this is the perfect place to come to cuz the Machidas have a great mind set and mentality of traditional karate while at the same time making it ideal for self defense.

If you are a beginner AND A CHILD or young teen, this is the place to be. If you are an adult don't waste your time. I would recommend sweet science, black house mma, or hill street boxing in Long Beach. You will not find calculated aggression here, you will be paired with a child wearing a Pablo Escobar shirt that is half your size to hold pads for.... Wow GREAT TRAINING! Also why have literally an entire closet of gear and harp on having to buy your own gear? Yeah we can argue about hygiene. If hygiene is your priority then get rid of the closet that has literally every glove size and shin protector size. KEY POINTS NOT FOR ADULTS NO IRON WILL BE SHARPENED HERE STAFF IS AMAZING!

Jake is the main instructor for the beginning classes and he is great. Patient, funny, and very experienced. His instructions are clear and he provides helpful feedback. I suggest taking your own gloves if you can. It's an intense cardio workout. As someone who has been harassed and assaulted in the past, I feel so much more confident and stronger now!!

The coach takes the time in every class to work with everyone and help dial in technique. I genuinely look forward to being here after work to unwind and decompress.

One of the hardest things to find when it comes to find a good fighting gym is a place that has the…read moreright culture and vibe for everyone. A place that isn't toxic, that has respectful regulars who aren't territorial, a place where people offer their hand and give their name first before asking for yours. You'd be surprised at how openly hostile, rude, tribal, clique-y, and toxic a fighting gym can be. (Or maybe you aren't) Regardless, the rare places that aren't like that, you gotta hold onto. Not to mention, you have to have a coach who took the time, paid "the dues", and is passionate about the art. The DEN, I can assure is one of those places. If you're curious about the art of 8 limbs, or if you're somebody who wants to fully get into it. Stop by the Den! 10/10 would recommend. On a side note.....Coach James is one of the great "what-ifs" of the sport. In my mind, he could have been an incredible professional fighter. But, in his own words, "I never liked the spot light and I don't like getting too much attention." But "I just love Muay Thai, and I'm getting to do what I love." But don't let the sentiment fool you. He's an absolute beast in the ring, and guys nearly 20 years his junior have a hard time keeping up with him when they spar. The gym also is quite "Spartan", no frills, no expensive machines, one punching bag, a few weights, a bathroom, an equipment room, a mat area, and a ring. That's about it. Everyone gets nice a close on a busy day, but for me, that's kind of the charm of the place. No crazy amenities, just a temple dedicated to the striking art. The regulars, including the guys who have been coming for years, are remarkably laid-back individuals. No real chip on anyone's shoulders, no one is trying to prove anything, just a bunch of real enthusiasts of the art. Case in point, I'm surprised to find that after a few weeks, a bunch of them even remembered my name, gave me a fist bump, and welcomed me back. But again, don't let the sentiment fool you, if you punch hard, they'll punch back harder, and if you think you keep up with them, they'll take you to depths you haven't been before. There are levels to this game, and there a people there who are going to be 2-3 levels above you. My advice, be friendly, be consistent, be respectful, and stay humble.

I never played sports because I didn't think I'd be good at any of them, and I never enjoyed working out. I originally joined because I simply wanted to be more active and find something fun to do. I never imagined I would completely fall in love with Muay Thai. Over the past year and a half, this gym has given me so much more than just a workout. The two coaches, Ryan Castillo and Bruce Chacon, welcome anyone from "I've never trained a day in my life" to "I'm an experienced professional" and give everyone the same amount of respect, attention to technique and motivation. Workouts are designed to be high intensity and consist of high volume with a combination of body weight and kettle bell oriented workouts but you're welcomed to train at your own pace! Even if you're looking to get an intense cardiovascular workout or learn how to defend yourself, you'll be gaining invaluable knowledge from experienced professionals and you'll develop a greater self-confidence and respect from your peers!
