Sometimes "local" can mean "we know the owners " and it might not be that good. BLACK LODGE IS THAT GOOD... and then some! Alex and his team are lovely- just what you want in a small town coffee shop. He will share where his inspiration came from on this drink or that drink- all while greeting each local, by name. Be on the lookout for a Ken doll that resembles Alex, the owner. If you find him, you get the pleasure of hiding him all over again! It's really fun for kids to keep busy. We stopped here on our way from Santa Claus to STL. The coffee, ambiance, and service were all excellent. The barista made my coffee absolutely perfect per my special order, and my kids loved the homemade popsicles! I wish I'd have thought to take pictures, but I highly recommend a stop on the way through. It was worth going 10 mins off the interstate. We planned on grabbing lunch at SAYS down the street (also awesome), or we'd have tried the pastries/muffins/egg bites. Usually this place is great, but my last visit was terrible. The cold brew was undrinkable and the people working didn't offer to remake it (it was still 95% full as it truly was undrinkable) or to make something different, or to even acknowledge the fact that a customer was standing in front of them asking for a do over. They stared at me blankly and just waited for me to leave, at which time one of them said thanks for stopping in. Was she being sarcastic or was she just so oblivious and thought I was joking? I have no idea. But if those ladies are the only ones working the next time I visit, I'll just turn around and leave. Gas station powdered cappuccino would be better than what they served, at least that wouldn't be watered down swill. read more

Besides serving great coffee, which they roast themselves, they have a menu of drinks you won't find anywhere else--with ingredients like lavender and sorghum. Beyond that, the atmosphere is inviting and peaceful. Alex, who owns the business with his husband and is also the roaster, takes obvious pride in his business and enjoys explaining to customers how his drinks are made. When I spoke with him, he also made great suggestions for what to see in the pretty town of New Harmony. This place is amazing! We were lucky enough to be sent here by our waitress from dinner last night at the Red Geranium. We went this morning and before we left town we went again!!! The owners are amazing and have a passion for what they are doing. Their attention to detail is inspiring, but their patience and care with each individual customer sets them apart from every other coffee place you will go to. They took their time to show us the beans and discussed flavor profiles with us. We bought two bags of coffee beans and a couple of drinks to go. We can't wait to come back to New Harmony. I visited New Harmony this past weekend with my fiance and I am so glad we happened upon Black Lodge! If you are looking for a hidden gem in this small town I highly recommend this location for a great coffee experience. Some coffee roasters don't actually serve coffee but this place serves coffee (drip, pour over, and french press), mochas, and even some small scones and muffins. There are places to sit and stay awhile or grab some drinks and stroll over to the roofless church, labyrinth or Antheneum building. It looks like golf charts have become a popular choice in getting around town but it is small enough you should definitely walk. read more
