The staff were all very friendly and available to help throughout the weekend. There was running water, bathrooms, and showers available. We would definitely stay here again.

Black River State Forest is chock full o' awesome things to do!…read more You can bike, hike, snowshoe, ATV, ride horses, dive, swim, camp, paddle, fish, among many other options. The staff at the main office at the Castle Mound Campground are friendly and helpful regardless of where you may be camping or recreating. I frequently camp with my paddling groups at Castle Mound prior to paddling the Black River. The sites are well laid out, and if you reserve sites 12, 13, or 35, you are closest to both the outhouses and the wood house. Racks of wood are available for $3. Just load up the handy rack located next to the shelter, and deposit your $3 in the collection box. Each site has a fire ring with a cantilever grill grate. Be sure to bring some aluminum foil if you want to cook right on the grate! The showers located near the main office are fairly clean and easy to use compared to those at many other state parks. They have a good potable and non-potable water station you can hit on your way out for the day's activities. The group campsite at the north end of the State Forest is very spacious. They only allow a relatively small amount of people to camp there, considering the space could host a county fair. It used to be a horse camp. Now it hosts group sites with large pads for RVs and campers. The rangers we dealt with at this location were very friendly, and the one high school kid who was assisting was a great help in finding where to access some of the local trout streams (a challenge in this watershed because almost every stream is in a box canyon). The only drawback to camping at the group camp, the East Fork Campground, or the indoor group camp (which I want to try this winter) is that they are pretty far from the paddling locations we use. It's a hefty drive from the Interstate to the north end of the State Forest. If you're in the area and the timing is right, stop in at the Ho-Chunk Pow Wow which takes place on the northwest edge of the State Forest. It's quite an experience, and the announcer is hilarious: "We're doing the same thing tomorrow. The same... damn... thing."

Very disappointing. I do not recommend this trip if it's raining...even though they say they do operate rain or shine. Other companies that had people out on the trails seemed to have full front shields which shield you from getting hit by the rain in your face going 55 mph while our vehicles only had half shields which don't protect your face (only the bottom half of the front window area.) While we did expect to get wet (based on pictures on the website), we didn't expect the piercing rain in the face. The ride seemed fast, kind of rushed but I think it was more due to the weather and after 3 hours of getting whipped in the face with the rain, we were good anyhow :). Don't get me wrong...it was still a lot of fun and we still had a good time riding through the puddles and sliding around in the clay and mud on the trails. I don't blame our guide for any of this. He was honestly a great person..super friendly, kind, and all around nice guy. This said though, we would not recommend this company due to the issues of them not paying their guides and also them asking the customer to pay for the gas at the end. It's a small thing really..only about $25 for the gas, but after paying over $500 for the rental, you would think they had already factored in the need to provide gas for their vehicle. Also, beware that for restrooms, there is only a portapotty (in case you need to change clothes afterwards as we did :)

We went to rent three WaveRunners with our group of friends. Outside, they had new WaveRunners…read moreavailable, but they gave us the older ones. When I asked why, they gave a ridiculous excuse, saying they couldn't give us the new ones because we were a group, and they would only give them to solo riders. Despite the illogical reasoning, we took the older ones without causing any issues and started riding. Ten minutes before the end, I was swapping the passenger behind me with another friend. Both of us stopped, and there was a distance of about 4 meters between us. The friend behind me jumped into the water and went to the other WaveRunner. Just at that moment, one of the employees was coming towards me at high speed. Unable to control his speed, he tried to veer to the right to avoid hitting me head-on but ended up colliding with me. The 16-year-old employee said we needed to return to the shore, so we did. He told everyone that I had hit him, even though myself and two friends witnessed the incident. I explained the situation, and two female managers came. Surprisingly, both of them accused me, as if they had witnessed the whole thing. Their only argument was that we shouldn't have been that close. I understood that point, but their employee shouldn't have approached me with such speed and shouldn't have hit me. Despite my efforts to explain, they blamed me unjustly. Then, another employee on the shore, who was more than 200 meters away from the incident, claimed to have seen me hitting the employee. This was an obvious lie and deception. Later, the girl at the reception inside the establishment claimed that I had asked her a question: "What happens in case of an accident?" I asked her to show the footage because I knew I hadn't asked her anything like that, but she said she didn't have the authority to access the cameras. When I got home, I saw that they had charged $1030 to my credit card. This is a robbery, a lie, and a slander. I strongly advise staying away from this place. I will do everything I can to get my money back. The document I signed does mention that I will be liable for any damages to the WaveRunner I rented, but there is no clause stating that their employee can come so close and even collide with me, and I have to pay for their expenses.

Being my 30th bday we wanted to go down with a bang, and I changed my reservation time three times to accommodate the sunniest warmest part of the weekend. They were always super nice and changed my reservation time no problem. Nothing got mixed up. Not a bad place at all. Best prices in town. Did some research and everything was more Expensive. Tube and skis included. Beautiful area of the Wisconsin river. Highly recommend. We would return for sure.
