This is the best place in town to get a coffee or a mocha. They have the largest mocha you've ever seen and it's not even on the menu. It's a giant mocha and it is the deal the chocolate that they use at Black Rock is far superior to Starbucks by a mile. I won't even go back to Starbucks after going to Black Rock. End of the year, double check 'did i review this' time... as my teenager begged for an item, i thought to double check if I reviewed this location... sure enough bot so much. Im basing this review on the coffee mainly as the service of these drive thrus are always pretty stellar. The coffee here is definitely above starbux, thats a solid 2 on a good day, but far from a premium shop like we have in downtown troutdale or downtown gresham. Its just pretty bad if you want drip and not 6 pumps of various sugars. The menu here is better than dutch bros, as those just confuse me as a non frequent customer. Its a 3 star if you arent looking for a 400-600 cal drink, its a 4 star if you want that sweet treat. The classic "wish they had a half star" its a 3.5 average. read more

Horrible experience. The barista who seemed to be in charge was rude, dismissive, and gave me a smirking look up and down that felt openly racist and hostile. She refused to let me use my birthday reward with no explanation, laughed about tipping, and made me feel singled out and unwelcome. I left the store in tears and cried the whole drive home. Lovely atmosphere! I frequent this location to do work on my laptop and the staff is always friendly. The coffee shop has a lot of windows and have a lot of natural light. On nice days they roll up the garage slider-style door and it lets fresh air in. This location does things right! read more

Even though Black Rock Coffee is not one of my favorites, I am giving them four stars. Literally, everyone who works there is nice, friendly, helpful, and always smiling. They are also fast in executing your order (executing! Where did that come from?). The best room is always clean. Whenever they are slow, they are sweeping and cleaning. So, why aren't they one of my favorite places? I can't pinpoint it, but I think that place is not very comfortable. The coffee, is okay. I wish they had more vegan options though. read more

I usually come in for coffee 4 days out of the 7 and every time I come the coffee is burnt. I thought it was just me but my fiancé tried my coffee and said it was disgusting and tasted burnt. Employees must not be cleaning the machine properly I went to the Powell location and got the same coffee and was surprised that my coffee there tasted amazing. Sadly I've been wasting my money going to Troutdale location I've forgotten what coffee should taste like. I will start driving the extra mile to get what I pay for. read more

Coffee connoisseurs rejoice. What we love about Black Rock is the friendly baristas and great coffee. You will get both by visiting this Black Rock location. Located off Stark in Troutdale you will find this Black Rock. This is one of the few locations that has a seating/ lounge area. I generally opt for the drive thru. The employees here are very friendly and I appreciate how they do a good job of keeping the drive thru line flowing. We are able to get our drinks in a timely manner, which is great since we are always busy running around. The Americanos here are our go to drink. The coffee is freshly brewed and rich tasting. The prices here is a little bit cheaper than what you would find in Starbucks. It is also nice that they do a stamp card, where after your 10th drink you get one free. read more

I've been coming here for at least 6 months. The girls that have been taking care of us are always so happy to see us. It always makes us feel welcomed. This is my first Black Rock experience. I'm so excited to have another option for a "cool" coffee bar besides the Starbucks Ruler of the Coffee World and Dutch Bros So Good But Waste My Time in Gresham. I decided to go in to get the full experience. The inside has lots of tables and cozy chairs to sit in. There's a lot of natural night and two garage doors that open for air. Today was too hot for all that so they were closed and the air on, thank goodness. They have nice art by the same artist on the walls. I immediately noticed four employees working, two girls working the drive through and two guys doing other "things". I was quickly greeted with an enthusiastic hello by one of the girls. I took a minute to look at the menu since I've never been and I decided to get a medium iced chai with coconut milk for comparison purposes. They have coffee, smoothies, flavored Rockstars and other things for you to choose from. One of the guys took my order and the total came to $4.50 (a little more expensive than Dutch, I think). The guy was friendly and might have been the owner. I'd give them 3-4 stars for general friendliness. For location/atmosphere/cleanliness, I'd give them a 2-3 at this point. Having just opened on Friday, the restaurant was a mess. There are boxes everywhere, as it appears they're still stocking (the food cooler was light). There's trash building up and there were food crumbs all over the floor and on some tables. Despite being generally friendly, I'd also say that they're so focused on still getting everything ready that they missed an opportunity to really connect with a first time customer. They did the basics of friendliness and taking my order, but didn't ask if I'd been in, was familiar with the menu, or thank me for coming in. When leaving I noticed a box of cards on the counter that said there was an online ordering system. When I asked if I could take one, the guy who took my order said yes and asked if I wanted a punch card, too. If you're a brand new biz, take the time to give your new customers an experience that keeps them coming back (like build the loyalty at the time of sale). For that, I'd give them 2-3 stars. Overall, I might visit again for a drive through or after they've fully organized themselves and got up to speed. I'm hoping for a more connected experience and a reason to make this my coffee shop. Atmosphere: cozy, modern, outdoor and indoor seating. Various types of seating at the high top bar, on couches, at tables, indoor and outdoor. Staff: friendly and speedy. Drinks: ordered a dirty chai. Chai was lack luster, the shots of coffee were so watered down it just made my drink extra blah. Plus it was pricey compared to what I'm used to paying. Hours: great hours allows for one to work early in the morning and latish(9pm) in the evening. I would go here again the atmosphere has a fierce appeal and their hours are perfect. Plain Coffee probably deserves a try. I hate their WiFi access method which is a second reason I had to rate them kinda low. I don't use Facebook, and you need this to get onto the WiFi. read more

First off, the employees who work at this location are SO friendly and helpful, you can't help but be happy after talking to them. Seriously, they're all smiles. But maybe even more importantly, the coffee is great! I definitely prefer the taste of Black Rock coffee to any other coffee chain around. And I love that their baked goods are locally made, and taste great too!! The jalapeno bagel is my favorite, along with the Caramel Blondie chiller. So happy I finally gave this place a try! The first spot I went to other than local coffee shops was Dutch Bros so I thought I would venture outside of that and try out Black Rock Coffee. I've been going to Silk espresso religiously and they have hiked their prices up so high it's literally painful to pay for a coffee. Their prices are ridiculous so I needed a new go-to spot and I saw black rock across the street and decided to go. I ordered myself a latte and a smoothie for my son. I was blown away by how cute the kids drinks are. The cup is super cute and when you get whipped cream they put it on the tip like a little treat for the kids it was adorable! My latte was nice and hot and I was able to get home before it was cool enough to drink which I actually enjoy. It was a very good latte, I didn't taste like it $6 silk latte but it was definitely right under it. I would much rather pay 3.50 for BlackRock than twice as much for the same thing at silk. Rather recently in my life I've become a coffee drinker. Coming from Chicago our main choices of coffee shops were either Starbucks or Caribou Coffee. There's a lot more variation in coffee shops out here and it's better than going to the same shop all the time. Black Rock is by far the best coffee I've had since I've moved here though. I got an Oreo chiller and was surprised how much coffee was in it. I'm used to Starbucks were the coffee is way outweighed by the flavoring they put in their flavored drinks. The coffee at Black Rock is definitely on the stronger side, but it's not overpowering by any means. The Merry Berry muffins and Jalapeño Cheddar bagels here are delicious. If you drive around Oregon you're bound to see a BR logo on a car or two at some point. Black Rock has kind of a cult following and rightfully so. Their fan base is extremely loyal and it's well deserved because Black Rock comes out on top across the board. read more

Coffee is great. Their daily deals are also cool if you want to try something new or familiar at a good price. However, their employees were having a ruckus that evening of my visit. The young gentlemen who worked there kept twerking and being a clown to other employees who were hanging in the lobby. It felt like I was back in high school which is fun and all, but I only like to visit that for like 5 minute increments not for the whole hour. Very loud atmosphere, not recommended if you want to be productive or are the introvert type. Lots of clanging and chatter. Good music selection though. read more

This restaurant's non-compliance gives me serious doubts about the company's concern for the health of its employees and patrons, and I suspect their attention to cleanliness and sanitation is also lacking. Black Rock was the hidden jewel of my home town. Born in Medford, OR there was only one location. I'm so excited that there is one near my new home here in Gresham!!! Black rock offers a variety of drinks! The baristas here can make just about any coffee drink and they even have dairy free and sugar free options!! Also, if you aren't a coffee lover, they have smoothies, tea, Rock Star, hot chocolate and Redbull! Their sandwiches are from Portland sandwich company and are absolutely delicious! Their pastry selection is mouth watering, including the gluten free options!!! If pastries and sandwiches aren't enough, they also have things like fruit cups and bagels!! So tasty! Walking into Black Rock in Troutdale, I immediately felt cozy. With warm, welcoming staff who are excited to be at work. As you look around you see wood every where! Gorgeous hard wood floors, Wood paneling, wood tables, and even their bar is wood. The mushroom wood is adorned with raw looking steal, which gives it this earthy-rustic look. They also have leather seating around this elaborate faux fire place! The lobby is very open, due to the many windows and dual garage doors on either side, making the store feel large and roomy. The walls are filled with colorful art that really makes you feel like you're in Portland. The grand opening was amazing!!! They were so well organized!! The traffic was being directed by multiple people. They were fully staffed. I was greeted with a menu and list of events ahead of time. The day was rather hot but they passed out water!!! The staff were patient and kind when it came time to order. If you're looking for great service, cozy atmosphere and delicious coffee, I highly recommend this place. read more

I've been a fan of Black Rock from 2010 when I was introduced to the wonders of the Jackhammer in Hillsboro (I was in the final stretch of grad school...such fond memories). I digress. All that to say, I was super excited pulling out of the hospital parking lot, to see a Black Rock across the way! No more driving to Clackamas or 181st for my Black Rock fix. We did not get the opportunity to venture inside today, but I look forward to doing so in the future. I was greeted by very friendly staff who took their time to listen to my tendency to ramble and communicate the very specific need of my little man's drink order: "not cold" but "not hot" chocolate milk. They found my son's request as amusing as I did and gladly warmed his beverage to 80 degrees. My son was so pleased that he literally finished his entire chocolate milk before we pulled back onto Stark. The coffee was as I have come to expect from Black Rock--smooth with no lingering bitterness. I'm one happy momma knowing that BR is now on our weekly route. read more

I was so excited when this opened, but hadn't had a chance to stop by until this week. I am annoyed at myself for not making an opportunity earlier. Of course the coffee is delicious, it's Black Rock!! I love their coffee. It's the service that makes it. The young lady who took our order both days I stopped by this week was so engaging and genuinely sweet that it couldn't help but start my morning off well. I, unfortunately, didn't catch her name, but I wish I had. My friend, who was driving, was on her way back to the SF Bay area she was truly excited and wanted to know more about the trip and the bay. And even thought she was fully engaged in the conversation, her attention to customer service never wavered and we were in and out and on our way with zero delay. I'm on weight loss plan and asked for a sugar free option on the promotion. The guy at the drive thru said, SURE, we do all of them sugar free. Sucking up, kids, will not make customers come back.Especially when they ask for a specific thing and you lie to the customer. When I got to the window, the guy there said, "How about ice cream? Our ice cream mix has sugar in it." What part of no sugar didn't you understand? I said,'no, I need sugar free." He got a bit huffy that a customer questioned his choice. When I received the drink, I could tell there was sugar in it. If a customer asks for something, then offer what you can do instead of making a decision for them, thinking, "I know what she really wants. She'll thank me," said his ego. My bad.
