Then as you walk around the store, you can see pottery at all stages of its production. Bonus for me: the day I was there, Kevin was talking to his high school art teacher who inspired him to go into this field. It was so nice to see the mentor/mentee relationship, and from their conversation is sounds like Kevin is paying this forward with some youngins. The pottery is lovely, but the best places are all about the people behind the art, and Barnstable Pottery is one of those places.

Now I, being a fan, enthusiast and novice artist myself always have a special place in my heart for a pottery studio. When I walked in with my two partners in crime, we found the studio owner sitting at one of 4 wheels trimming pieces and enjoying the wonderful sunny day. There was a basset hound lounging on the floor and a charming woman keeping him company. Walking in you are immediately at ease, listening to the fountain made of thrown pieces and other parts as it playfully blows to each part. There are combination pieces making castles of all sizes in addition to other functional pieces. Mugs, vases, bowls, other little jars and containers. The castles themselves were impressive and obviously he has a considerable amount of time vested in each. I had even seen a bowl I was sure was hand build slab work but low and behold it was a huge, shallow bowl that had obvious signs of thrown work. There were even small oil lamps he had thrown and built. I almost regret not purchasing anything. Then we got to talking. He was welcoming and laid back almost as you would expect anyone to be who enjoys cape life. He was full of knowledge about all sorts of other things and even directed us to great lunch spots and a coffee house he raved about in the village. We had to have chatted for over an hour while admiring the style of his art that surrounded us. As we were hurrying out the door to get to the coffee shop before it close, we promised to be back. And next time I am NOT leaving empty handed.

Tony has helped me over the years at my vacation home in Eastham, so I shot him a text with my problem and some pictures. After I pestered the poor man with innumerable emails and questions and pictures, he was patient with me throughout and perfectly professional. He was able to locate a perfect match , supply me with the glue and the colored grout and practically install it long distance. Here's the finished product. Can you spot the replacement? They also have a small amount of sculpture and a gift shop upstairs. They have openings every week throughout the summer -- and that means a new show every week, too. As an art student, I'm not really in the market to purchase anything, but if I were an art collector I'd probably start here. I've always enjoyed going there to look at great paintings. If you go to an opening you can usually meet the artist, and they're more than happy to talk to you about their work.
