Visited their new space in the Vandalia tower and I think it really helped with their inventory as there is significantly more area to display and place all their goods. Hoping they might be able to reintroduce that moody vibe from their first shop, but I think that will come with time as they settle in. I do kinda wish it was on the first floor because I'm worried being on the second floor means they may not get as much walk through traffic and would love to see them thrive here. They *still* do not use price tags so you either have to ask or check their website for prices unfortunately. On the plus side parking is much easier in their new space and still free. read more

Man stuff! I know I'm a girl, but I really enjoy stores like this. Mantiques, let's call them. BlackBlue is the coolest place a guy can shop in St. Paul. It's the kind of store you might call a haberdashery instead (like bartender vs. mixologist). And a gorgeous haberdashery it is, inside and out. They must have redecorated at one point, because some of the pictures posted here look very little like the store I was in present-day. The merchandise is made up of mainly American brands (some Minnesota brands and foreign designers too). I saw blankets and scarves from Faribault Woolen Mills and something woolen from Bemidji too. There's also jeans, shoes, mittens, sweaters, flannels, hoodies, ties, belts, bags, scarves... pretty much everything I would want to play dress up with my fella. There's just one of everything on the floor, so don't be shy about asking to try on your size. Much to my surprise, there is a small selection of women's stuff too, including denim! It's very small, mind you, but I stood in front of a beautiful striped sweater dress by a Danish knitwear brand for a few solid minutes ogling. I even took a picture of it in case I find $250 in my wallet tomorrow. I chatted with the owner Steve and the second-in-command, Satchel, who are both very nice (and actually recognized me from the world wide web). I kinda eavesdropped as Satchel was helping another shopper with the jeans she was trying on and giving her some solid advice about breaking them in, washing, hemming, etc. Yes, it's pricey. However, I'd rather just make the initial investment at a place like this when my gentleman friend is the kind of guy who wears things until I physically have to put them in the garbage because they are unfit for the donation pile. At least if we bought something here, it would take much longer for it to fall a part... and he'd look manly chic until then. read more

Going into a nice, well-run clothing store is a strange thing for me. I grew up poor, rural, and tragically uncool. Where I come from, JC Penny is considered fancy, and Wal-Mart is essentially the only place in town you can buy things like toilet paper, jeans, or a .45 cal hand gun. It's wild. So Blackblue is a strange place for me, because it's the complete opposite of Wal-Mart. It's a delicately curated, perfectly fit oasis of high-quality men's (and women's!) clothing. Nearly everything in this store is something I would love to wear, and I'm not exactly Derek Zoolander. Their clothing skews more towards high-quality, USA made as it does towards the runway, and it shows. Each piece is functional, classic, and timeless. They carry a wide range of raw denim especially from folks like Pure Blue Japan (highest grade Japanese denim), Raleigh (all-American brand that uses US cotton that has been grown, milled, and sewn all in the USA), and Left Field (USA made reproductions of classic workwear fits from the 50s, 60s, and 70s.) Most importantly the people who work there take the time to make you feel comfortable. They ask you questions to find out what you're into. They gently help find things you might like, rather than trying to force you into something that doesn't fit your style. And they do it all without a hint of condescension. There's an obvious focus on making you feel comfortable and judgement-free. Blackblue is the perfect clothing store in my eyes. Can't recommend it enough. read more

I absolutely love this shop. I live out of state, but every time I'm back in town I make a point to come into BlackBlue. The quality of the pieces they bring in is incredible, and I've been turned onto a lot of brands and lines that became big years later. Most of the lines they carry are made in USA, Japan, or England - which I appreciate as I always try to avoid sweatshop-made apparel. I am so over the moon happy with Black Blue, and the folks I met there today, and the Yoo* "sweatshirt" I purchased. To say that I was stalking this place is an understatement. You know how I am (cheeky monkey anybody). But I knew this was going to be special, so I didn't obsess too much. Caveat: Two nights ago I slipped a note under the door asking them to call or email me when they open, and they did. Ok. I will let you off the tenter hooks and tell you now that this is a Men's Boutique. Let me rephrase that. This is a boutique the likes of which you will find in New York or San Francisco. Bare bulbs hang from the ceiling, tennis rackets cross themselves restfully on the wall, and an old wood ironing board sits open next to a pair of long ski's. In the center is a wood table with sweaters, and one entire wall is a cool display of shoes (Generic Surplus now, Tretorn soon). And the best part? There isn't a single bird or tree embroidered on any of the shirts! Can you imagine that? I knew there wouldn't be, just from driving and walking by and pressing my face to the glass (sorry about the smudge marks) at two in the morning... I don't want to give it all away, but you have to go and check it out. *what, you don't know the designer Hyden Yoo? Me either. That is the beauty of Black Blue. You don't know them now, but you certainly may in the future! read more

It seems like finding good guys clothes is always a challenge. Especially if you're not into the chain-store kind of stuff. BlackBlue definitely is not a chain-store. A small shop located at the intersection of Dale and Selby in St. Paul, BlackBlue has some of the best shirts, pants and jackets for men in Minnesota. The look can best be defined as urban-relaxed, featuring a well curated selection of cowboy shirts from Pendelton, flannel shirts from Hyden Yoo, jeans from APC, shoes from Red Wing Boots and pants and jackets from Shades of Greece. The selection is small - they get one of each size of each piece they get in the store - but that is part of the magic of BlackBlue; if you buy something here, it's sure to be unique here in the Twin Cities. Service is great and I've never walked away without buying something. This isn't a pretentious men's store, nor a high-end boutique. It's a cool shop with some great men's clothes at reasonable prices. read more

With few exceptions, the Twin Cities is a sartorially inept place. This is North Face country, where sweatpants reign king and dad jeans are considered dressy. Fortunately, a small but growing number of Minnesotans are developing personal style and understanding fashion, proper fit, and quality clothing. These gains are largely thanks to Black Blue. Black Blue carries brands not normally found in the Twin Cities. The store curates pieces by Gitman Vintage (which I would buy all of if I had unlimited funds), APC, S.N.S. Herning sweaters, and Baldwin Denim, amongst other brands. The pieces they carry are timeless designs with modern tailoring - you won't find any billowing shirts with cheap fabrics here, nor the aforementioned dad jeans. The staff is impeccably dressed and generally helpful. Satchel in particular is an expert on selvedge denim, and he carefully helped me pick out my new Baldwin Henley jeans and Red Wing Iron Ranger boots. Though the prices are steeper than most clothing stores in the Twin Cities, the design and quality of the clothes are worth the investment. Even as a poor college student, I had no qualms about the prices (reinforcing my belief that quality trumps quantity - this is my uniform). When a little more money rolls in, I'll definitely be back to buy some Gitman oxfords. read more

I almost don't want to write this review so I can keep this place a secret but my better judgement tells me that I need to get the word out because this is the type of store that deserves to thrive. I went in last weekend with the sole intention of finding a pair of jeans. The owner was extremely helpful. I tried on a pair of raw APC's which I thought fit, but the owner let me know that I needed to go down a size because they are going to stretch overtime. He didn't have the size I needed but he had a pair on the way and he took my info to let me know when they got there. But beyond jeans, everything else is great. Lots of original penguin sweaters and shirts. They don't have much women's stuff, mostly just a couple pairs of shoes and some uni-sex shirts, but it's a men's store so what do you expect. Lots of local MN stuff too. Overall, it's a great store with a great owner. I know I'll be back. read more

After hearing about BlackBlue from a friend I decided to check it out. As a really nice men's boutique, it's a surprise that it's not located somewhere with more foot traffic--namely, Grand Avenue. The selection of apparel, attention to detail, and care the store gives to its patrons was at a level I have not found at other stores in the Twin Cities. Prices ranged anywhere moderate to semi-expensive. I was only looking for shirts. I found a nice button down, short sleeve for $48, while other shirts were as much at $130. As a retailer of Tretorn shoes, I inquired as whether or not they were able to sell shoes currently not on display. He gave me his card and told me I could email him the model and size I wanted and he would check with his rep to get me what I wanted. BlackBlue is fantastic little boutique minimally filled with stylish clothing for men who like their attire to be understated, timeless, and comfortable. We lingered in this store twice as long as I expected to (especially for a shopping-hater like my boyfriend) due to the really interesting selection and the suuuuuuuuuuper friendly sales person. Whoever she is, she's awesome and I am glad to hear that she has recently moved to the neighborhood so that I might run into her more often. If my boyfriend wasn't so (delightfully) lanky, BlackBlue would get every dime of his wardrobe budget dollars. Well, I must say I was heavily impressed with their fashion selection -- shirts, sweaters, hoodies, jeans, shoes, everything! Not only is their merchandise great, but the staff is great, too. A friend and connoisseur of denim recommended that I make an effort to swing by this shop while in Saint Paul on vacation. The selection is curated with small-run domestic and imported brands. Some were familiar while others were new to me. I enjoyed meeting Steve the owner and his knowledgeable staff. They recommended their current favorite jeans purveyor, (orSlow) a Japanese selvedge denim company, and I found a great fitting pair that I'm excited to add to my wardrobe. They measured my inseam and will ship the jeans to me in Seattle after hemming the cuffs to length. I wish I had more time to explore the store and look forward to a return trip. read more

I had planned to bring my friend from NYC by Black Blue after brunch this morning. We stopped by at noon and while the shop lights were on, the door was locked. I called and no one answered. We shopped at Primp for 10 mins and stopped back by but still the door was locked and there was no sign of life on the other side. I'm really disappointed that I didn't get to share the shop with him- he could tell thru the window that the variety and brands offered inside were right up his alley. Sorry you missed out on that sale but try being open when your door and website indicate you're supposed to be. I won't be stopping back. read more

BlackBlue is truly a rare find. My favorite clothing store in Minnesota, perhaps favorite I've ever found. It is a meticulously tailored aggregator of extremely high quality men's clothing. Every time I'm in Minnesota I make an explicit point to stop in, usually leaving with a lighter wallet (though every penny is worth it). BlackBlue's "style" varies but always with a emphasis on craft, quality and uniqueness. Many of my best wardrobe pieces, the ones I actually get complimented on, are from here and I often hear myself telling people: "Yeah, I got it in Minnesota at a great little store... BlackBlue, yeah... it's really, really amazing... you should fly to Minnesota and go there." Besides the inventory, Ryan the Store Manager is an extremely knowledgeable, compassionate and helpful figure who has been consistently wonderful for the past 3 or 4 years I've loved BlackBlue. I am always so happy to walk in, see his smile and shake his hand. He is so energetic in helping me find what I want, at the best price, offering all sorts of suggestions that a real friend of mine might give (a human being rather than the usual corporate nametag). Ryan's continued presence and enthusiasm really has been the key for me. So many stores feel like white-washed, emotionless alters to consumption and commercialism - not so with BlackBlue. These are real people with real, interesting ideas about clothing and style. I trust them. I trust their taste and I trust their compassion. And that's why I now recommend them to you. 10/10 read more

This is where all the people who are too rich for J Crew shop. This store is amazing for casual mens clothing, shoes and accessories. It brings great mens style to the twin cities but my husband was too afraid to even touch anything in this store. We like our designer duds but $125 for a casual cotton button up shirt seems way out there. Nonetheless, I appreciate this store for what it is and the layout, selection and vibe is really fantastic. I have heard of this magical land where APC, Rachel Comey and Filson were being sold IRL. I finally managed to make the trek to St. Paul (psychologically sooo faaarrrr) and I was not disappointed! It was only a shame that I am not a man, though I have a lot of masculine energy so I guess I could pull it off. Great selection of clothes for the dapper man. The collection has purpose, it is small but focused on accessible, unique clothes that you can't find anywhere else in St. Paul. Up-to-date fashion (like jeans from APC and shirts from Penguin) tasteful vintage pieces (especially the Pendleton wool shirts - perfect Minnesota style), wonderful shoes (for men and women) and Minnesota-made essentials (Duluth Packs, Red Wing Shoes). My one and only nice pair of jeans finally bit the dust, and I knew this was THE place to go for a replacement. Boy, was I right. Their selection of quality denim is the best in the cities. The owner and employees were all extremely helpful and friendly. I told them what I was looking for and what type of fit I was accustomed to, and within seconds I had a stack of jeans to try out. After a third attempt to come to this store (from NYC here), I finally made it in. Mind you, I'd come during "open" hours and the lights were on, but the door was always locked. This time, the next door bakery guy came out and kindly let us know that the guy that works at Blackblue store was typically late opening the shop. Needless to say, we went into the bakery for a coffee while we waited to get in. About 3 others were also waiting to get in. Once in, the clothes and accessories WERE great. Fantastic men's shop in St. Paul. Understated store front, clean and simple interior design, beautiful selection of menswear brands. I always find a stack of things to take into the fitting room with me, and tend to buy most of what I try on. There are great sales every once in a while as well -- got a pair of Tretorn boots for $20 at one visit. The sales staff are smart and honest, definitely not just gunning for commission sales. The place is usually pretty empty so you really get the one-on-one shopping treatment. Definitely a must-visit spot for the style-conscious men of the cities. read more

This place is one-of-a-kind. Their selection of clothing is of the highest quality and is hand-selected by the owner, Steve. Their customer service is unparalleled. It is not like going to a high end boutique like Versace where it feels stuck up and cold. The people here make you feel like family, and are willing to go above and beyond to take care of you. If you want unique, quality, last-forever type clothing, then this is the place to go. Their denim selection is particularly excellent (and they tailor in house)! Though it is a small store, it is well-curated so the items they have are interesting and special. I highly recommend BlackBlue. The owner is awesome and epitomizes why it's so great to support local businesses. He has a great eye for fashion and for what his customers will like.
