    23 turtles we counted!
    Melissa V.

A favorite easy walk. We occasionally stop here for a walk, it's not difficult at all. We frequently see people of all ages here. It's about 2 miles total if you walk all the way to the end before heading back. We stopped last weekend and quickly noticed some turtles sitting on a log sunning themselves, and then we noticed another log with more turtles! Then we came across a group of logs and counted 23 turtles on them!! We eventually reached a count of 100 and gave up counting!!!

Perfect weather, awesome sights. Great for a mini easy hike, and very friendly people!

Met a friend to go for a walk. Chosen since it was a halfway point between us. And they allow dogs. We ended up walking almost 6 miles. And there were still plenty of trails. Trails range from single file to wide dirt roads. Many trails by the canal or river. But many through the woods. Lots of options. Very little change in elevation. Restrooms at River Bend were clean. Will probably come back again.

Absolutely beautiful scenic park located in Uxbridge, MA. There are several open fields close to the river as well as wooded areas bordering the Blackstone as it meanders through the park and local country side. Between the canal and river there is a dirt pack trail suitable for walking, jogging and dogs are allowed as long as they are leashed. In one of the open areas as near the river is a stand of birch trees which was magnificent and rather unusual in their growth pattern. This park is a 5 star experience you won't want to miss if you like the outdoors and have a spirit of adventure.

It seemed like a good idea at the time Blackstone River & Canal State Park is a track of land along the Blackstone River that has areas for hiking, picnicking and exploring history. Way back in the early 19th century the industrial revolution, fed by the many textile mills in the area, demanded a faster and more reliable way of getting the goods to the ports and large ships by the ocean. Canals seemed the logical choice and a period and extensive and enthusiastic canal digging began. Encouraged by the the success of the Erie Canal of 1817, the Blackstone Canal was seen as a great way of getting textiles and other material from the mills of Central Massachusetts to the ships of the Atlantic Ocean. It was completed in 1828 and became an immediate success. However problems with this canal, as with all the others of the time, quickly developed. Droughts dried up the canals and made them too shallow and floods made them too dangerous. Mud made the tow roads difficult to move on and locks required lots of maintenance and were time consuming. Transportation of goods became very dependent of the vicissitudes of the weather. The railroads finally drove the last nail in the coffin of the canals and by 1848 the Blackstone Canal closed for good. Like most of the other very ambitious canals of the time the Blackstone didn't last very long. Although the canal no longer serves it original propose it's still a cool place to explore and hike. Most of the structures are long gone but many areas of the tow roads, locks and canal itself can be seen and the Blackstone River and little ponds are still there. There is also a little visitors center at River Bend Farm and nice areas for a picnic or more causal stroll. The canals of New England are an important but mostly forgotten part of history. A lot of time, effort and money was poured into them but they ultimately proved less than successful. Fortunately parks like this preserve what is left of the great canals and what seemed like a very good idea at the time.

We were looking for some place to take a nice walk on a lazy Sunday and alas, our GPS lead us here. I didn't expect much since the last time we relied on our GPS, it lead us to a smelly beach that filled us with GPS regret. Upon arriving, we saw wide open fields, beautiful foliage and a wonderful little red barn. It was so inviting! We began to take a walk along the trail and it lead us to more beautiful fields and various stops along the river. There were just enough people on the trail to feel safe but not too crowded. The sights and sounds were beautiful. We saw bikers, canoers, runners and walkers like us. We ended up at the end of the trail where we saw an old (but restored) Mill. While we only walked a small portion of the trail, we felt like we were in a little piece of heaven on that beautiful Fall Day. We will make it a point to return again and again. Perfect place to enjoy nature!

    Walkies!!!

This was a beautiful pathway and my dog sure enjoyed the views too !! I loved that the path has fresh cut grass it's definitely care for and my dog has the choice to walk on path or grass. Wish they had water stops on the pathway but overall best bike path I've seen.

So we googled picnic areas nearby and put our GPS to Medway, MA. The rood trip was winding picturesque road through towns with beautiful houses and finally came to Choate Park. Free and plenty of parking. It's a trash free park, what you bring in, take out. There is an event pavilion and beautiful lake for catch & release fishing ....or turtles ( see pics) lol. There is a fantastic playground for the little & big ones. The trail around the lake has exercise spots and open fields with a huge wall mural. This will definitely be a go to spot for picnics, walking and being in nature.

I don't think the water area is particularly slippery but i would suggest water shoes. My son and a couple of other children who were barefoot did slip. The playground structures are really unique and fun. They have a smaller one for young kids and larger structure for older kids. There was also a trail and lake but we didn't follow. Highlights: -fenced in with only two doors -bathrooms (clean and open until 5pm) -clean - picnic area with tables and benches. Covered and large with plenty of seating. -electric car charging station (not free) -plenty of parking Cons -no trash cans. Small inconvenience. Overall would def recommend as a summertime activity.

It's Time to jump into The TimeMobile & scour the Earth & take you to places from a different time that you won't believe still exist. We have set the dial to the 1890's in the town of Milford MA about an hour outside of Boston. We've landed at this Beautiful Irish Round Tower that conjures up images from a bygone era. The Tower looks like it has been plucked from medieval times from thousands of miles across the Pond in Ireland. IT IS BEAUTIFUL! Father Patrick Cuddihy envisioned an Irish Round Tower as the centerpiece of a new cemetery when the land was purchased in 1890 for the Catholics of Saint Mary's Parish in Milford. Travelers from all over the globe spend thousands of dollars & travel to Ireland to see The Irish Round Towers. There is one Irish Tower in particular called The Devenish round tower & is located in County Fermanagh on an island located on Lower Lough Erne Lake. The Round Irish Tower in Milford is almost an exact replica with the same look, design & height as the The Devenish Tower in Ireland. It is made out of Granite from the Milford quarry. It stands tall over the graves of thousands of Irish immigrants who were buried in the cemetery. They are laid to rest in an Irish setting that mimics the architecture & land of Ireland. You might wonder why did Fr. Cuddihy build this tower? The answer can be found in his obituary "It may be folly - yet when you and I have passed away, the Irish in America will make a pilgrimage to the Irish Round Tower at Milford." Now although it was very popular in its day this has now fallen completely under the radar. Now just about everyone has heard of the German Fairy Tale Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm, but have no idea that a Rapunzel like Tower even exists here in America. The Milford Round Tower was the only one of its kind in the whole USA for decades & only a few Irish Towers in the whole world even exist outside of Ireland. In 2003 The Tower at Castleton Lyons Farm was built in Kentucky to be an exact replica of the round tower at the Rock of Cashel in County Tipperary Ireland. So now there are 2 Irish Round Towers in the US. The Milford one is well over a hundred years older than the one in Kentucky. It represents a unique granite architectural wonder that pays tribute to Father Cuddihy vision of an Irish Tower in America without going overseas. The 1978 East German stamps of Rapunzel look just like the Devenish Tower in Ireland & the one in Milford MA. I have posted the stamp pictures for you to see too. Just so you know the door to the Tower is locked so you can't venture to the top! In addition, behind the Irish round tower there is a small pond & benches with pine trees in the background that makes a peaceful place to pray, meditate & explore the grounds. On the other side there is a mysterious cave like structure that resembles a catacomb. Across the street there is a public park and free parking. You really wouldn't expect to see an Irish Round Tower or a Rapunzel Tower at a cemetery, but that's where it is - a True Hidden Gem. To make it really worth your trip in the area check out The Moon Tree a tree that went to the Moon & The Largest Rosary Beads in the World both in Holliston. All of these are Freebies as well. It used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget!

You do have to pay to get in- but it's really cheap! Sadly the arcade was closed and the water slides weren't in the water due to Covid. A little slimy- but it was cool you could see huge sun fish swimming right next to you! There wasn't too many people here which was nice! They had lifeguards on duty! They had a roped off section where you could rent kayaks, paddle boards and little row boats which was priced amazing at like $7.00 an hour or $7.00 for 45 minutes the only downside was that it was roped off to a small section only due to covid! They had a volleyball court, a playground, ping pong tables and so many cool attributes. Lunch for 3 people was less then $25 including ice cream which is amazing- at the beach it would have been $60! I was quite impressed with this little beach and I would definitely be back- My only complaint would be wishing the parking was closer!

There also numerous, nicely marked trails off this main loop. It's a fairly quiet trail and easy enough that the occasional toddler and stroller passed. At one end of the trail, you need to walk a short way across a bridge under construction. There's not much of a sidewalk to use, but the traffic was very quiet during our weekend outing. According to their website, the initiation of Parklands acquisition was in 1899, and in 1900 the town brought in Warren H. Manning to help architect the entire layout.  There is no parking on the pond boat ramp or at the spaces next to  the bath house. This area is well-marked and the Hopedale Police Department will continue to ticket unauthorized and non-handicap vehicles parked in this area. This area is a drop-off zone only. Vehicles should be parked along Hopedale Street. We found plenty of parking on Hopedale Street, and used the green space there to lunch by the pond. There are benches scattered along the pond loop. Dogs are allowed on a leash and the trail is well marked, which according to their website is the result of the efforts of Mark Andolina, Jr., a Boy Scout from Hopedale Troop 1, who created a new trail map and installed new trail markers as part of his Eagle Scout project. We look forward to a return visit.
