No one at the beach besides the 3 lifeguards

Drove an hour to get here because I knew you could bring dogs on the beach. We get here and there are 5 lifeguards doing cartwheels and hanging out. I went up to one of them and asked since there was literally no one at the beach if they minded if my dog swam for a bit and rather than nicely tell me she couldn't he responded by saying "actually we would mind". Come to find out you can't swim in any of the bodies of water here because there is a bacteria that led to it failing the inspection. No signs were posted when you enter the park (and where you have to pay). I am at a loss for words, NEVER coming back here.

    Pretty amazing forest

Pretty great place to hang out in the summer. Bbq, swimming, hiking, you name it. Be sure to come early to claim a spot. It gets pretty crowded on holidays. There were definitely a ton of bugs in the grilling area, and we had to guard our food all the time. Some of them even fell out of the trees.

Nice place for a pit stop before dinner

I found this park by passing a sign on the highway and realized it was only 10 minutes away. I drove through the little town before coming across the entrance for the park. I went late in the day around 6:30 and didn't seem to have to pay since there was no body at the office in the driveway so I just followed the signs for the beach. I was surprised to see how many people were still out paddle boarding but it looked like a lot of fun and really made me want to jump in! I had stopped by after a day of meetings so I opted to take a walk around the lake and then hang out on the rocks to watch the paddle boarders. It is a very pleasant spot and I would like to come back for watersports on my next visit.

The Hopkinton State Park is very nice and spacious with many different things like boat rentals, hiking, picnic areas with grills and more!

A nice swimming area if it is not closed due to bacteria. It is a nice park. Lifeguards on duty and a bathhouse. Pay online for parking.

Park closes at 8 pm. Bathrooms closed at 7 pm? Cleaning stuff don't allow to use bathrooms after they cleaned.

We've been coming here since we moved to the area 25 years ago and because the entire reservoir is within the park property, it looks much the same as it did a quarter century ago. This morning I met a friend and we took our dogs for a walk. We were shocked that on a summer morning, we only passed two people along the trail- one with a dog (on leash as required) and one friendly solo human. The trails are very rooted and while I've done mountain biking here in the past, it's definitely easier to maneuver this one on foot. The trails are *sort of* marked with yellow spray paint on trees. As other people have mentioned, despite many times walking here I still always question if I'm going the right way. Even in the trail area, it's easy to wander off a bit. But also as someone mentioned, the beauty of this trail is that as long as you keep the reservoir on the same side and within view, you'll be fine! I like to park at the Boat Launch side of the park because you can access the trail right there without walking through a giant parking lot- so it feels more natural. I also like to head to the right (facing the water at the boat launch), therefore keeping the reservoir on my left the whole time. The public beach area (no lifeguards) is about halfway from the boat launch which is a great water/snack/bathroom break. The ranger station was open and the bathrooms were, as well. This section of the park has tons of shaded picnic areas and plenty of sandy and grassy space to spread out. This area used to get very busy on weekends with large gatherings - I'm not sure if that's still the case. But today there was one family group having a quiet picnic but the beach was empty. The trail around the reservoir is almost completely shaded except for the elevated causeway across the dam which is about .3miles of exposed trail- also of note are the annoying bugs that zip around this tall grass but seem to not bother humans. Ashland State Park is a great place to visit! Definitely recommend checking out this gem!

There also numerous, nicely marked trails off this main loop. It's a fairly quiet trail and easy enough that the occasional toddler and stroller passed. At one end of the trail, you need to walk a short way across a bridge under construction. There's not much of a sidewalk to use, but the traffic was very quiet during our weekend outing. According to their website, the initiation of Parklands acquisition was in 1899, and in 1900 the town brought in Warren H. Manning to help architect the entire layout.  There is no parking on the pond boat ramp or at the spaces next to  the bath house. This area is well-marked and the Hopedale Police Department will continue to ticket unauthorized and non-handicap vehicles parked in this area. This area is a drop-off zone only. Vehicles should be parked along Hopedale Street. We found plenty of parking on Hopedale Street, and used the green space there to lunch by the pond. There are benches scattered along the pond loop. Dogs are allowed on a leash and the trail is well marked, which according to their website is the result of the efforts of Mark Andolina, Jr., a Boy Scout from Hopedale Troop 1, who created a new trail map and installed new trail markers as part of his Eagle Scout project. We look forward to a return visit.

Not sure if I picked the wrong day or the wrong trail but my "hiking" experience in the Blue Hills…read morefell short. In general, there's not great hiking around Boston unless you keep doing the same trails in Milddlesex but I had heard a lot of good things about Blue Hills so off I went. 1. The Skyline trail, for being the most popular one, was extremely poorly marked. I'm glad I downloaded the AllTrails map ahead of time for the route because even with the map, I got turned around several times and had to scurry forward and back to try to find the markings. At one point, the markings disappeared completely, i.e., I was definitely off-trail, and I couldn't find my way back without committing to another rock scramble back down, so I just consulted the map, did another trail, and cut back to the same route a few minutes later. 2. So very, very buggy. Most of the time that I was walking, I was swatting a bug, trying not to eat a bug, or actually eating a bug. Not the most pleasant of hiking conditions but something avoidable by just coming later in the season when all the bugs are dead. Passed by some lakes that looked very scenic from a distance but then, when you get close, you see it's all pretty much stagnant water/pond scum and millions of mating bugs. 3. This may be relatively minor but if you're coming from Boston, the traffic to get over here is dreadful and, again depending on which starting point you use, there aren't bathrooms available. Plan accordingly. 4. Parking was free and easy - I went with the Shea Memorial Rink in Quincy and hopped right onto the trailhead from there. 5. Hiking shoes are fine but I think this hike is doable in sneakers. Aside from a scramble here or there, the elevation was pretty gradual. Do be careful of the various roots and whatnot. I guess the lesson is: bug spray and download the trail map. Unless you're fine making a day of it and trying different trails, but even so, download the map.

If you're looking for a place to go hiking near Boston, Blue Hills Reservation is the perfect spot…read moreto go to! It is just a couple miles south of Boston! There's many different trails here, though I haven't done all of them, I mainly enjoy going up from Chickatawbut Rd (towards Braintree/Quincy) and near the Milton 2B Exit on Canton Ave/Washington St. The Skyline Trail is great if you've got some time on your hands but for a short hike, I wouldn't recommend. This trail is around 3 miles and at the summit, you get a grand skyline view of Boston! On this route, you will see the Summit tower & the Observatory. In the winter time, skiing and snow tubing is very popular here.
