They offer art classes throughout the year for artists of all levels and ages . The staff is friendly and knowledgeable . They are all artists themselves . Blaines is open 7 days a week . They also have a nice collection of cards and gifts for everyone . Of course you can always find art by local artists on display and quite often it will be the work of the employee helping you . Blaine's Art scams their customers left and right with overpriced art supplies that can often be found for much lower prices at better art stores like Blick's, Jackson's, and even Ebay. What is Amanda thinking by charging her customers an outrageous $400 for a set of color pencils that can be bought for $200 or less on Ebay and Amazon? Customer service is also pretty crappy here, since I was always treated like an "outsider artist" instead of the professional that I've been for years. Amanda is also a classist bigot who snubs customers that she feels are not bourgeoisie enough for her snobbish standards, which makes her no better than a common racist. Anyway, if you want the best art supplies for decent prices? Then I highly recommend Blick's, Jackson's, Ebay, or even Amazon over Amanda's overpriced inferior establishment. If you want your art displayed on the wall? I also recommend you display anywhere but at Blaine's, because no serious art buyer will ever see it at Blaine's and it will be displayed next to mediocre garbage art that not even a mother would display on a refrigerator door. My family and I have been coming to Blaine's Art for advanced art supplies for years! We started at Michael's but as you or your kids advance and need advanced/professional art supplies, this is the place to go! From the beginning their customer service is incredible, always asking how they can help us find what we need but better than that, they take the time to help you understand various Art concepts such as the difference between oil, painting, and acrylic painting or the various tools need for your art projects. The Coffee Bar is nice and it's relaxing just to walk around and get ideas about your next Art Project. We have also attended adult Art classes and the level of professionalism and skills that they teach is well worth the money for these classes. 10 out of 10 and hands down the best art supply store in Alaska. read more

Great customer service - very personable with custom design and framing. Cost varies

I tend to enjoy every visit made to Blaine's. As somebody who likes to try new mediums every other week, the wide selection of different tools and materials at Blaine's is like being a kid in a candy shop. The only thing I feel that Blaine's can be challenged on is pricing, but I do feel that there is a certain margin you just have to expect when buying locally vs buying online or at big box stores; plus I feel like it is a wonderful thing to even have a local option at all! Some of the pricing is not the most competitive, but for other things, such as markers, they tend to have very similar pricing to somewhere like Michael's, and have the benefit of being more organized and well-kept. When I buy a marker from Blaine's, I don't feel the need to worry that the lid was left off the last time someone picked it up, or that the lids might be on the wrong markers, etc. To me, the more intimate, person driven experience is worth the extra few dollars here and there, especially if you are into mediums that need more specific or high-end supplies. I do printmaking, and the variety of inks and tools they have at Blaine's is unmatched anywhere else in town. Overall, I would say Blaine's is definitely worth a stop, even if just to look around and imagine all the things you could make! read more

Second time in a week - my father comes to town and signs up for classes while he's here, which includes putting $50 down and scheduling time in the middle of a Sunday. This class was scheduled from 2-4, and they call at ONE to tell him they didn't have enough paying customers so they're cancelling the class. This is BAD business, and it leaves a bad feeling for people. He puts money down, so they have to work through refunding him money, and this because they didn't have SIX people attending... So my father goes home, doesn't go to the class, ordered his supplies online, and watched videos online for the specific painting he was going to go to the class over - because the company wasn't willing to follow through on the class. (I get that you need a certain amount of students to cover the cost - but $95 per person plus supplies cost, maybe you pay the instructor $300 for teaching, and I doubt the supplies are "at cost", so how much do you need to make, when you're bringing in five customers, plus the additional people that come with them? ) Disappointed in the lack of regard for the customer. read more

Blaines has always been an awesome place for art and for art supplies. When I can afford it I would much rather go here than to Michaels but they do have higher end and better quality supplies so they are more expensive but it depends on what level of quality you want AND it's locally owned. read more

This review is long overdue. Beautiful store, with a great selection for all artists young, and young at heart. The staff and owner are knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and to sum it up, wonderful. Ambiance conversation is everything art, and the espresso is delicious. It's simply a feel good place. This past summer I took some art classes from Kirah Van Sickle. Looks like it's time for a re-assessment. I'd originally rated this business with four stars, as I'd been very satisfied with the multiple frame jobs I assigned to this establishment; and please let me be clear this is no reflection on the staff, as they've been nothing but courteous and as helpful as can be. It's their framer, Brent who put them in this situation, and he wasn't present to own his foul-up (I'd use a more colorful description but it's a family site), so they had to play surrogate. Anyway, I dropped off a piece in early August to be repaired, and it just so happened that it was my man Brent who assessed it and determined that the job would be complete by September 12th. Fast forward to today, September 23rd, when I present myself at the service desk to inquire as to the status of my piece, and I'm informed that it's not ready (hasn't even been touched is more like it). The staff is left holding the bag because there's really no reason they can think of why the project hasn't been completed a full two weeks after the promised date, and what can one do when faced with an angry customer who decided it's time for a refund and wants his piece back, because clearly the framer is too busy to even take a moment to keep his customer informed of any delays which might've occurred. Hell, they might've even understood, but...crickets. So, that being said, if you need art supplies, by all means, knock yourself out as there's plenty from which to choose. But...if you're looking to have something framed in a timely fashion, proceed at your own peril. read more

This is the only place around that has "real artist's supplies" if you cannot find what you are looking for she will order it. I love shopping there the atmosphere is so warm and friendly. This is the best place in town to buy art supplies. Their prices beat Michaels, and quality isn't even a competition. Staff are friendly and helpful. I have been able to find everything from specific calligraphy pen nibs, markers that contain a certain chemical (no not for sniffing!), to specialty inks and pigments. Their acrylics selection is great. If you're into art you're probably already a regular, but if you're just getting into it or if you're a crafter looking for specific supplies make sure to give them a try. read more

I went in the week before Christmas looking for a specific product. It was a weekday morning and not busy at all, but after wandering up and down the aisles, I finally approached the counter to ask where I might look for this product. There were three girls behind the counter chatting amongst themselves who didn't seem very interested in helping. When I asked, it turned out that the location was very near the counter, but even at that, I had to keep asking to get them to show me what I was looking for and to get prices. It felt like I was intruding on their conversation. I've always been happy with my service in the past, but this was not a good experience at all. read more

Only art store in town (not counting Michael's). On items with prices marked, often twice what amazon charges even with shipping, sorry to say. Many items have no price marked. If you can find the competent sales person on duty that day, they can look up a price. I have often walked in with several items on my shopping list, asked for help to find one item, sales person takes me to it then disappears. Find someone to help me find next item, they show me where it is, then disappear, etc. That's when I'm lucky & the sales person (1) knows what I'm referring to or asks me to describe it (2) knows whether they carry that item or has a clue how to look it up and (3) is knowledgeable enough or cares enough for my business to help me find an alternative if they don't carry the item. I would EASILY spend 2-3 times the money there if there were friendly, helpful, preferably knowledgeable people to help me. I'd be glad to give feedback if anyone at Blaine's cares to contact me. Only reason I give any stars is because I had an awesome class there yesterday. Unfortunately, though, the class list was lost, they let in tons of people who hadn't registered previously, so the class was extremely crowded. If a friend hadn't saved my spot & I had been sent away, I would be lobbying Yelp to let us give 0-star reviews. I love art & art supplies, I spend quite a bit of money on them, and I SO wish I could make our only art store in town work for me. In the meantime, I'll only go there when I have lots of time on my hands, lots of patience, and don't mind if the cup of chai latte I buy that SAYS "Chai latte" on the lid is actually coffee.
