I enjoyed my first shopping experience here. I had to take a drive to get here but it was worth the trip to see all the amazing supplies they carry. I'll definitely return again simply because of the assortment of options for every medium you can think. Be advised you'll need to find street parking (I easily found something nearby). So since i paid for the hour I took the time to do a lap of the store. I was greeted quickly by the staff (assisted with directions for the supplies I came for). They were sure to check on me and my progress and helped me sign up for future discounts. I think it's definitely worth the drive to come if you're having a hard time finding a specialty brand or niche supply. They carry everything you can think of. I went in to get a few art supplies, a T-square, set of French curves, etc.. While they had what I needed, I was thrown off on how all three white employees were in my area I was in. There was absolutely no reason for all three employees to be in front of the aisle I was in. When I came in, two was on the floor and the other was behind the counter. Since this is the quality of service I should expect, I'll take my business elsewhere. You have let me know you feel about your Black customers. read more

It's not the biggest art store I've ever been into, but I appreciate how close it is to MICA and they keep it stocked with the most used/needed supplies so I don't have to order them online It's mix between a Utrecht and Blick, so if you are signed up as a "Preferred Customer" or whatever it's called, make sure to let them know! They are able to match their online prices so you end up saving a lot more! For instance, right now on Blick's website a Speedball Lino cutter Set 1 is around 9 bucks, where in-store it's around 14. That's a big difference in cost if you're planning on buying art supplies frequently here. The guys who work here are very helpful and friendly, so if you're looking for something specific, they can definitely help you out. read more

Utrecht, all around is always my favorite art supply store. I've grown to love it back home in NYC, the one here in Baltimore is just as good if not BETTER. Found all the materials I needed for class and they even had the whole kit of supplies for one of my classes so I didn't even need to look! Courtesy of the good relations they have with my professor. So while I waited to pay, the cash registers were acting up so it took a while waiting on line. They started giving out free acrylic paint and oil paint to make up for the inconvenience. "Customer Appreciation" I'm not an art guy, but I went in and they had excellent customer service. I was trying to decorate a board for my church and I think I mistook the place for a crafts store, when it's more art centered. I still think they could have had a little in the way of project building. I walked out with construction paper. Haven't been to this location in over 5 years since it was an Ulltrecht. Went in midweek on my lunch break. There was one other customer there when I arrived and maybe three others came in during my 45 minute midweek visit. Despite there being slower store traffic that day, I felt like I would have still received the same level of attention if they had been busier- well not the same, they were slow enough that day to take detailed notes of my product inquiries so that they can look into the items I was after and see if they'd be able to stock them. That fact alone is amazing! Can you imagine that happening at a Michael's? No, you can't. Because it wouldn't happen in two lifetimes. Michael's would say sorry, we don't have that and tough shit here's a completely different thing than what you want and it's gonna cost you 3 times as much. The young woman who helped me wasn't familiar with the watercolor product I was looking for, but her doggedness in finding out the correct answers for me, and maybe a substitution, after asking other coworkers, led to her flagging down her general manager as she was undoubtedly coming back from her lunch break, relaying to her my questions, and subsequently leading to my learning a thing or two: one, don't try to sub procion dyes for brushos because the fabric dyes will not give the lift I'm after with a watercolor. And two, Pebeo paints are super duper fantastic so I got them instead. Then I went to the clearance section and found watercolor inks for 1.50 a bottle and Pitt brush pens for 5 beans for a 4 pack (primaries + green). The watercolor inks are amazing, smack you across the face glitterful and since I am the kind of girl who loves shimmer in her fountain pens, clogged feeds be damned, I got 6 watercolor inks. And they can be lifted all day long from my paper. And what calligraphy nut/mixed media junkie doesn't love a good, thin, bouncy Pitt pen filled with oh so vibrant India ink? Almost got two packs for the price, but I have to save my money. Because I learned a third fact during my visit- Copic refills (and markers) are crazy inexpensive when purchased 12 at a time. The young man who rang me up gifted me that tidbit. TLDR: This store and its employees are an asset to the community and to Baltimore. Shop here first! read more

Great store! I decided to treat myself to some new supplies, and I was glad this was close by because I wanted to go into a store rather than purchase items online. I plugged the parking meter for half an hour, but ended up browsing the store for closer to an hour! I was looking for drawing supplies and the selection was great. The staff were very friendly, checking in a few times to see if I needed any assistance. I'm sure I'll be back! read more

Great art supply store in the Baltimore area! The quality of products definitely separates this store from the likes of Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc. They have great selections of canvas, paint media (watercolor, oil, acrylic), paint brushes, all kinds of paper (drawing paper, wrapping paper, origami paper), clay, molding tools, just to name a few. I'm very impressed by the selection for how small the building is. Be prepared to splurge though, because quality comes with cost. I compare it to a boutique. The store is stocked with good quality products, that you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else. One downside is that they stock some generic products that you can find at places like Hobby Lobby, but their price was marked 10-20% more. Namely, a drawing table lamp that was $80 at Hobby Lobby was almost $100 here. My advice is to do your research before you buy something that may be readily available elsewhere. However, that minute issue doesn't deter me from visiting again. This store has A LOT to offer! I'll be back! read more

Much better place to buy art supplies than Michael's or a second rate art supply store. The employees are helpful and will take their time helping you. They were having a large sale when I went there and I saved quite a bit of money buying brushes and paints. This is by far the best art specialty store in the area. read more

I came here looking for book-binding supplies, and was pleased that they had everything that I needed. Unfortunately, they only had one of everything I needed: one kind to offer, and one left to offer. It made me feel like the place doesn't get a lot of business and therefore doesn't stock up on a huge variety of supplies. So if you need materials, you can find them here. I have decided to write a review for my local Utrecht as there are a couple of stored close by in competition and it might help others to sort it out. Depending on what your looking for the Balto. Utrecht might be the place to go. Utrecht has the same pricing between store and website so one can easily do most of their "browsing" before they take the trip to store, though your best bet is to call as the Balto store, while having decent space, doesn't carry nearly as much product as the co. offers on whole. It might be best that you try to read-up on what you want before going as well as the staff may not be too numerous and you might be on your own at times...though the prices are right! I am into watercolor and I am not sure about now but in past I know that the staff wasn't real hip on watercolor supply knowledge...maybe MICA doesn't teach it, oh well. I had asked for a small cup etc. of water to test a quite expensive brush before purchase and was looked at like I had three heads. The store return policy dictates that a "used" (once placed in water) brush is non-refundable so I wanted to be sure I was getting what I paid for before leaving with my "forever" purchase. If you know about watercolor brushes you know that a reputable retailer will let you test out a kolinsky sable before purchase, usually with color:) not all hand-made brushes are made the same! I am sure that the "we have watercolor brushes...their over there" is enough to fulfill the expectations of the average art school student spending student/parent loan monies, but for the more experienced amateur/pro/hobbyist artist it might help the store if the customer didn't feel more knowledgeable then staff on various product, not including placement. I have still seen fit to give a 4 star rating as Utrecht beats out its comp. on price and selection in Balto area but I hope this review might be seen by the management and seen for what it is. Even though its an "art supply store" where one expects to find starving artist and or art schooler manning the wheel it is still not cool to have them be hip at the price of good salesmanship etc. The caveat at Utrecht, and most art supply stores is, you take the good with the bad with the staff!!! read more
