I especially love to go there when it's hot in Reno, during the summer. It's always cooler in Galena Creek Regional Park because it's nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the huge conifers that provide a lot of shade. There are numerous trails that you can hike on. My favorite one is The Natural Trail. It is located off of the parking lot, across from the park ranger's office. You will hear the sound of water flowing down from the mountains, in Galena Creek and there is a wooden bridge that leads to The Nature Trail and Bitter-Brush Trail. There is also a fishing pond. Church's Pond is located up the paved drive, past the Park Ranger's office. I hope that my review will inspire others to enjoy a nice picnic or hiking experience. We have to drive towards Mt Rose, Incline, or/and Tahoe. Paved short 1 mile walk/hike. More short unpaved 1 mile, 2 miles roundtrip, hikes. But it was VERY dusty today. Breaking in my new REI Salomon hiking shoes. "Ruined" or broken in on the very first day, lol. Lots of wildlife in the summer. Again, stay safe - Coyotes, bobcats, mule deer, black beers (we get this at the house also, LOL), mountain lions, rodents (too many to name), bats, birds, reptiles, etc. But during the winter, it feels very safe and relaxing. Atmosphere - Plenty of parking. I enjoy visiting these places most during off peak seasons. There are also campsites, BBQ, picnic areas, volleyball courts, horse shoe, clean bathrooms, plenty of parking (cars, RVs, buses, etc). There is even a stage in Eagle Meadows for events. Open 7 days a week from 7am to 7pm (hours are also seasonal, see their website). Clean bathrooms throughout the different parking lots and camp sites. And also "outhouse" smelly bathrooms in other parking lots, you choose... Horse and bike trails. Service - Self service. The visitor center was open, but I did not visit it. Price - Free. In the daytime, this road is magnificent and the switchback turns are enjoyable even in a big Sprinter van. At night time, this would have been terrifying. From this lookout spot where there are a handful of parking spaces, you can look across the Reno valley and see the interstate across the way and the southern end of the city of Reno. This area is new to me so I don't know what's what or even how much of the city we can see. But the view was amazing. If you're able-bodied, there is a bit of a walkway down through clearings to some rock piles that seem to have been fashioned into lookouts. I would recommend caution as this is the Nevada desert and you might be disturbing some of the creepy crawlies that think your big toe is dinner. That would be unpleasant. But the views? It is however a review of the drive up there and back. WOW! I had no idea there were ranches and mansions there! So beautiful. The homes, the land, the cattle, the horses. Who knew? I'm a relative newcomer to Reno having moved here in 2014. I love it here for so many different reasons not the least of which is discovering the hidden gems that are so close to my home. It's well worth the drive even if you aren't a hiker.

The rocks seem to be combination of worn river rocks and volcanic sharp rocks. Lots of wild mustangs are always around to enjoy. This morning there were some deer out. I'm sure there are snakes that you need to be aware of, but out early enough to avoid them this time. Take plenty of water if you are out for a while, there is absolutely no shade trees around.

Dayton State Park is a lovely little park with a historic background surrounding silver mining in…read morethe area. There are only 10 campsites and until Covid-19 hit, you could almost always find a spot. That's no guarantee now but I suspect visitation will subside over winter with no hookups at the park. It does get quite cold here in the winter. The sites are gravel and largely level. The first half of the loop is more tent-friendly sized spaces and the latter half have a bit more room for larger rigs. They are all surrounded by majestic cottonwoods that are utterly glorious in the fall. The tree cover is great for summer shade but a challenge if you're managing a solar setup. There are some sites that are less shaded to offset that, though. There's central water, flush toilets, and trash receptacles. The dump station is open intermittently and I've yet to understand the pattern to when it is and isn't. There are two free dump stations I'm aware of in Carson City, though -- at the Maverik (at Hwy 50 and College Ave.) and the new Golden Gate (at College Ave. and Retail Dr.) The park is split by Hwy 50 with the stamp mill ruins on the west side and the campground and restrooms on the east side. There is a foot tunnel connecting the two bits but it's a bit dicey from a safety standpoint so I'd recommend strolling to the aboveground crosswalk a little down the road. Dayton State Park is a sweet little place full of potential but largely unloved and overlooked. As a former Dayton resident, I've gotten to witness the park's challenges over time. In talking with the park supervisor about it, she acknowledged Dayton has its struggles, sometimes involving crime, and that the Nevada park system is underfunded and understaffed like most public lands departments. I've not had any issues when staying there but have witnessed some questionable activity in the day use area. It seems the tide is turning as locals have begun to reclaim it in recent months and have been putting in substantial volunteer time to freshen it up and give it the love it deserves. I'm hopeful that effort will help Dayton SP become a destination instead of just a place to stop over for the night. We're looking forward to joining in after our post-full-timer lives once we get our house built nearby. A note about fires: this is a volatile wildfire area so charcoal fires and smoking outdoors are often banned much of the year. Don't count on being able to grill in any Nevada State Park during fire seasons. Have a backup plan or support some of the local business in my little town -- Js' Oldtown Bistro on Main Street is absolutely wonderful. It's my absolute favorite restaurant but since it's off the main drag (US 50), you might not notice it. And for scrumptious tamales and other Mexican fare, The Lady Tamales is right by the park. The Pizza Factory has also delivered to us in the park if you're looking for your dinner to come to you.

This is a trail that supposedly goes on for 12 miles and it's mostly flat and packed down terrain. I enjoyed my 4 miles with different views that I'm used to. It's very nice to have this trail in the center of Reno.

Since its construction, the Ditch has developed into a habitat for wildlife. The adjacent maintenance roads have become walking, hiking and biking trails. I love this Mt Rose hiking trail…read more It's about 11 mile loop trail located northeast of Incline Village in Nevada. The trail is considered moderately challenging with a steady climb. It took me about 6 hours to complete. Mount Rose Summit is the highest mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada, which remains open year-round. Gorgeous hiking trail! Enjoy!
