I came here yesterday with a Livingsocial coupon to get a shampoo&haircut with Kelly, who recently opened Blue Bamboo hair salon about 2 years ago. The sign is a little bit hidden but she had sent me directions before my appointment to the salon, which was super helpful. Kelly is great and made me feel comfortable as we discussed the cut I wanted. The salon is clean, bright, and I liked the cozy feel of being the only customer with her full attention on my hair! I love the hair products that she uses (Noma), which are animal-cruelty-free, smells good (mango or vanilla) and made my hair feel soft after the haircut. We started out with the shampoo and then she proceeded to cut my hair. I like that Kelly explained what she was doing while she was working on my haircut. Her policy is that within 2 weeks of a haircut, if you return home and decide you actually wanted her to cut more, or there was a spot you wanted changed, etc., you can come back to the salon and she will fix it for free. Also, Blue Bamboo has a loyalty program where you can earn points for referring friends, to get a discounted hair service! My haircut only took about an hour and I was really happy with how it turned out. Kelly makes you feel comfortable with the end result of the haircut and I'll be back again in the future! read more

Tonya at Blue Bamboo on Shannon Road gave adequate haircuts, around what would be expected from a Cost Cutters or Great Clips, but way overcharged: $130 for a child hair trim and and adult haircut, after initally attempting to charge $180. I was told as soon as I arrived with my 11-year-old daughter that her haricut would be charged as an adult cut because the owner was no longer allowing new child customers. This was despite the prominant display of prices for child haircuts at the front desk. My daughter has long, straight hair and straight bangs. Tonya washed her hair, trimmed the bangs and ends adequately, and blew her hair dry in about 25 minutes. For this she charged $70: $60 for a "long hair" adult cut, and an additional $10 for a "trim." When I tried to ask how she got to that price, she said that it was a trim, so that was $10 IN ADDITION TO the cost for a full adult long haircut. When I asked why a trim cost more than a regular haircut, she said because it was a trim. For my hair, she did an adequate shampoo, cut, and blow dry, for which she charged me $60 for a "thick" haircut. I'm 52 with greying hair, so it's a bit of a stretch to call my hair "thick" at this point. She initially tried to charge me $180 for both cuts, until I asked why it was that much. She then corrected it to $130. For this level of expertise, I think you'd be just as well off at Cost Cutters or Great Clips. If you want to pay this much, you may as well go to one of the salons that gives you champagne while you wait and spends and hour doing more than just and adquate cut. read more

Looking in Yelp Blue Bamboo (Durham by ninth street) had good ratings and I was able to schedule an appt online. My appt was 7am today and 20 min before I got there I received a text from the owner letting me know she was on her way and stopped for coffee and ask if I would like anything!!! She was awesome and took her time to talk about my hair to find a solution for a cut now that my hair is thinning. Kelly made me feel so welcome, and she spent a lot of time at the beginning getting to know me, my hair, and what I was looking for in a haircut. She really understands customer service, plus, she's loads of fun to talk to! It was a wonderful, enjoyable experience overall. A few days after my haircut, I decided that it wasn't quite as much layering as I had been hoping for. I called Kelly back and she fit me right in to add more layering, no charge. I had a horrible experience at Blue Bamboo Hair Salon with Kelly on August 9th. I drove out to the Chapel Hill location prior to my appointment for a consultation & brought photos of what I wanted. The morning of my appointment I brought the photos & we talked again about a balayage & 2 in trim. What I ended up with was hideous. The color wasn't blended at all & the cut was extremely uneven. I ended up spending 4.5 hours at another salon getting the color corrected and 8+ inches later the cut was evened out. Disappointed is an understatement. The color was corrected but the 8+ inches of hair is gone until it eventually grows back. read more

I don't get my hair cut often because I like to donate it and Kelly has no judgement knowing I won't be back for a while. And she always leaves me with something that will grow out well. I've been avoiding taking my almost 3 year old to get his haircut because I was so nervous about how he would do, but I was recommended to Kelly by multiple people so I decided to go for it. My son has a feeding tube right now and is also very shy so I was always hesitant to take him somewhere for a cut not knowing if they would be experienced or sensitive to kiddos that may need any extra attention. I came here earlier this month by way of Groupon, and I will definitely be returning in the future! I haven't had a haircut in 6 months and needed a trim while I was growing my hair out, so I bought the groupon that not only included a haircut but also a deep conditioning treatment. (Turns out, the summer is not the best time to get a hair cut... it's better left for spring, fall, and winter, but oh well). I actually had to reschedule my first appointment at the last minute, but they were very accomodating and can even be reached by email if needed. The salon is small and bright and nestled a block north of Whole Foods but very easy to find. Kelly gave me 100% of her attention and had me fill out a sheet while she was taking care of a young boy's haircut. Basically, on the sheet, I told her what products I was using, the kind of cut I was looking for, and my contact information. All of this is well documented so that she's prepared for all future visits (super on top of it! which I love!). She talked to me at length about the kind of cut I was looking for, and we got to know each other better. She also gives a fantastic head massage that I wish would last forever. All the products are great and free of animal cruelty and they smell amazing. I left the salon happy with my healthy hair and smiling from the experience.
